Questions? =D

Edit: I can't stop talking about them as if they're real. I feel like such a dork! For all the books I've read it's rare that I do this. I think it's your amazing characterisation!

@Kate that is.the.perfect solution! Thank you!
@Mandy & Aiko all shall be.revealed... eventually. ;)
Let you all in on a secret: sometimes I think they're real, too and l'm a little hooked right with you. Is that weird? Lol

LOL. You can thank me by getting Cai's book done as soon as possible. And be thinking of something to get through Darryl's skin. That boy has a protective coating an inch thick and spelled a.t.t.i.t.u.d.e. :D
Have you ever read the conversations that KA Mitchell occasionally posts between herself and her characters? I don't think you're alone in having them move in and make themselves at home. Heh.

Love the snippets of info. (thanks Dani)and updates from Kate "watching" Darryl :D

No, but now I've bookmarked her blog because it's so awesome to hear that someone does that besides me!

Kate, whatever you do, don't tell him you love him. Don't hug him or show him affection. He's got a mean right hook and an even more viscous tongue. (that sounded dirty too! oO)

\o/ It's great when threads lift spirits. I may have to hire Kate full time to watch over him.
Glad you enjoyed the covers. Deb is fantastic and beautiful, isn't she? Her work takes my breath away.

I read Cai's letter posted a few comments ago. His obsession with The Starry Night is like a beacon to me. I love Van Gogh, because his paintings still retain the effort of doing them, you can still see the clots of paint, the trails of the brushes. That painting, with that tree which steals way our attention as if it were a black hole, has always been unsettling for me. Sorry for the rambling, I obsess over single things. Like Peter's bunny slippers.
I'm looking forward to Cai's story.
I feel almost guilty for having paid only 2.99$ for your story, it's 2.30€. Let me know from which site you get the most money, because I'd like to maximize your profits next time!

I am an addicted of cover art too. :)
Those two are gorgeous! And I love the colouring as well.

Oh, wow, Emanuela, what a great compliment. I think the only book I ever felt like that about was Cody McFadyen's first novel. So if you felt like that about my book...*speechless* Thank you!
The Starry Night is something I admired too. TBH I don't know much about art, so I had to do a lot of research for Cai. I tried to have him in my head and things when I went on virtual museum tours and it was the brush strokes that struck me as well. (or maybe Cai-as-me lol?) There was such a contrast of that dark evil tree to the sleepy town below with its big-steepled church. I knew it was what Cai was fascinated with. And since he painted that (with variation) on Austin's wall with Riley looking on, it became even more significant.
I'm blabbing haha.
As for $2.99, to me the payback is people who can afford to buy it. The VAT amazon charges is such a shame for everyone overseas. And every purchase means that one person tells their friends. My favorite part about this whole thing? That people heard about my book from a friend. I haven't done any advertising. I didn't even tell my parents/friends about it until it made number 1. (my two best friends are reading it now. So I'm nervous about that) So your review will mean more to me than any amount of money.
I should put a warning on this thread: Warning, author prone to over-typing, over-explaining and info-dumping. Run while you still can =D.

Deb's drawings are inspirational. I love her work. I can't take credit for the coloring really, that's not the hard part lol. But thank you!
Doh! Ofc it's okay. I opened this thread for everyone to chat. =) Or just drop by with a question. Or throw my book at my head because they hated it =D All are welcome (I'm hoping the throwing the book thing will be metaphorical though).

Amazon didn't like my first review, apparently they do not only reject "fucked up", which I had edited before posting, but I also had to change "whore" too to get them to post it. Amazon always makes my day, lol

LOL Censorship ftw. oO About five? years ago (maybe more) in amazon's not-so-amazon stage, I wrote a review on a book. The only review that I'd ever written about a book. EVER. I was so mad at the book, I threw it against the wall 50 pages in. Amazon deleted the whole review >8( I didn't even swear in it. I just put down what beyond-stupidity the TSTL heroine was and why.
I haven't read a het romance since.

Dani I so hope I won't stumble in this book you are mentioning :/
And thanks for telling me I'm welcome here. I swear this site is way too big and confusing for me, sigh.

I haven't read a het romance since."
At least now they write to you when they reject it, but I don't think they write if they delete it. I post my reviews there because m/m is not sufficiently reviewed IMO and I know that a reviewed book is more appealing than a lonesome book, poor baby ;( When I found a Josh Lanyon's book that wasn't reviewed I thought WTF! So my amazon reviewing career began. Now I'm a bit frustrated because whenever I get close to the 3.500 top reviewer place, I am voted down. It's surely a coincidence, I don't review for a higher placing, but it's become a sort of barrier I want to tear down, I want to be 3.499 :)

Reviews are tricky that way and I think putting writing out there, even in the form of a review, is really difficult. I worried all the time about even putting my first chapter out there for anyone to read, but I felt it was important I did so.
Reviews, I believe, are for readers, so if you feel the urge (good or bad) to put a review out there, that's great for each of those readers who is helped by it.

Wow, that's terrific to be that high on the reviews. I love review blogs and reading reviews. I sometimes get lost on here and amazon just in the maze of reviews, nevermind the blurbs or "look inside"s.
I wonder if "liking" your review on amazon so you hurdle past that point falls under the category of responding to a review? =D I think it does lol. But maybe the others will read this and go "like" it over there.
I'm really careful about this, to the point that I've asked any friends and family that if they feel the need to review, to please write that they know me/are friends of mine. Other than that, I don't get involved in reviews.
From my standpoint, the moment an author gets involved, the conversation changes. People are less candid and some even shy away of reviewing. That seems unfair to me because everyone has a voice and all voices should be heard.
edit: I should have asked. Is it the "like" that helps move you up on the ladder? Or is it something else?

This is very true.
I have to confess I always feel bad when I write a review who isn't "good" but when something triggers me, I feel the need to say it. If only to help someone like me who may be "triggered" by the same thing.
I have to say I am a HUGE fan of spoilers, since I hate surprises, so some reviews I have read have been really helpful, and yes, those are for the readers :)

Yes and no, I don't know what else they take into account, there are fan voters, whose concept amuses me a lot, because having "fans" because you express an opinion is disturbing, but I have 4 of them, lmao. I'd love to know who they are, so to thank them at least. I guess it's also a combination of how recent your likings are, etc. It's very random, seen from the outside. It seems the program the Italian IRS uses to see if your earnings are consistent with your expenses, when it spits out the number, there's always a big WTF moment. It would be amusing, if it wouldn't lead to dire consequences *head desk*
I forgot to tell you how much I loved Austin's thinking mechanisms, what triggered his jokes. I also want to compliment you for Luis's character. His frustration and loyalty made a great guy. And although Austin is negatively obsessed by his father, I didn't dislike Desmond. He stood by Austin in his own way. I liked the way Darryl looked at him the first time he met him, he cracked me up :D

Oh gosh, me too haha. I inevitably skip to the end of a book that I"m unsure of and then take a breath and start reading. I have to lol.

Fans who follow reviews? I totally get that. I mean I've followed Chris for a long time and Jessewave and Jane over at Dearauthor.com. So yeah, I totally get that. Reviews are so interesting. I find all writing interesting (but I'm odd too). lol
Author opinion coming up-be warned :) I'm putting it behind spoiler tags, because I don't think an author's opinion on their book should matter to anyone but the author. Readers, imo, deserve to interpret the book however they want. It's theirs now, not mine. (view spoiler)
That is my interpretation, but it doesn't negate anyone else's experience, views or interpretations.

I don't know if I'm overthinking this, but there were moments that, even if Austin was fully embracing the gay, he thought of a future with kids as if he could have them "naturally". Austin's mother permitted that for him, to have the closest thing to a blood-son he could have.
RE Cai not being perfect... mmmh, *gasp*... ok, I'll take off my Cai-glasses, he's adorable and everything, but he scares me. People usually grow up with a given set of moral rules - don't kill, don't tell lies, be respectful of your parents, etc. etc. - but Cai seems to behave according to what's convenient in that moment, even if later he breaks apart, but he's Machiavellian and that scares me (and makes me want to know everything about him).

I don't think you're overthinking it in the least. ;) I'm not sure it's even possible to over think a book. Years later, I still have this irritant about books I've read and characters that stuck with me.
Emanuela ~plastic duck~ wrote: "RE: ARE: Austin and his mother, my interpretation was that he didn't really forgive her, but that he saw her flaws, and the fact that she didn't try to find a justification, that she told him that she wasn't meant to be a mother, was chilling-honest and it didn't depend on Austin, it depended on her, so that gave Austin a sort of closure, because Austin's mother, for the brief moments they met, was a lot LIKE Austin. "
Yes, this is probably more accurate to what I was saying. =)

Cai motivation spoiler (don't read if you don't want my view coloring your perspective =D LOL (view spoiler)

I have to say I have my own very particular sense of right and wrong, and to me Cai's makes perfect sense. I can't even kill a mosquito, but seeing how Peter's father was, and what he did, I can see why Cai has no remorse.
He reminds me of Sherlock Holmes (especially the BBC version, I adore that version). He used logic, period.
Regarding Austin's mother, I am biased. I loathe her. I can see that she doesn't want children, but to me you don't want them, you don't have them. She neglected them in a major way, leaving them with a man that was everything but a father.
I think it was good we saw and listened to her in the end though, Austin needed some sort of closure.
PS Dani I always read first the end of the book, and then start from the beginning. I can't read a book any other way :)

He makes perfect sense for me too :) The fact that he doesn't follow coded moral rules, but that he behaves rationally according to what he thinks is logical in that moment - and given his superior brain - makes him sort of unpredictable, and that's why he scares me. I forgot to explain that I wasn't implying moral in the sense of what's good or bad in the highest sense, but as the set of social rules people usually follow.
Re: Austin's mother, I don't feel sympathy for her. I have to accept her reasons, that she wanted Desmond. Then she did it again. It shows desperation, maybe? With that I can feel pity for her. I know people - women and men - who timed pregnancies for their marriage's sake, little good comes of it, unfortunately.
I almost always read the end of books first Darkm. You are not alone!
My issue with the mom/brother bit is that it felt tacked on. It wasn't part of the events up to that point and had the feeling of a loose end being tied up in a nice bow. I understood the abandonment issue hanging over Austin, but I like a few things left undone. :D It's more the start of another story than the ending of this one.

I can see that, Darkm. Sometimes it's difficult to understand poor decisions made by people. My mother supported Palin and then the T-party movement. I still get very angry with her over that. And I'm not sure I will ever understand her at all, esp considering she is a teacher and believes in unionizing. *boggle*
Emanuela ~plastic duck~ wrote: " I forgot to explain that I wasn't implying moral in the sense of what's good or bad in the highest sense, but as the set of social rules people usually follow. "
Yeah, his morality is actually really far away from mine, but I can see things from his perspective. It's one of the joys of characters in your head, you get to see all these different viewpoints and there is always someone to point out that not everything is black and white (and that maybe, subconsciously, I can see things in shades of grey and silver).
Kate wrote: "My issue with the mom/brother bit is that it felt tacked on. It wasn't part of the events up to that point and had the feeli..."
I totally get that, Kate, and I agree. I should have either left that story for a second short story; or I should have foreshadowed it better than just that one conversation with Austin and his dad, and gone into more detail with it.
I had always planned on an entire chapter dealing with it, but it was just such a huge book as it was and I had already deleted one whole chapter from the book (5k words). I wimped out basically lol and cut my plans/the story short.
Live and learn =D And now I don't think I'll have trouble either splitting a book up next time or adding it as a short afterward. So that's the cool thing that came about the mistake =D \o/

My parents are still mourning Berlusconi. Was I adopted? I am the spit image of my father, so I think I'm theirs, after all :)

The fact that they were able to raise me with opposite political views and not disown me tells me that not everything is lost :-D

I'll pass on my parents.
The don't even know who I really am.
Aiko you can disown them or you can talk about the weather when you see them. Sadly both hurts. :/
Anyway, back to topic.:)
Ema I can see your point about Austin's mother, but the pregnancy thing didn't work with Austin, why did she think it could work a second time? That man doesn't give a ** about his children.
Dani I hope you saved the chapter you deleted from the book! /sigh

LOL for copyright purposes I've saved everything from the book. Even the first copy, the emails back and forth between betas, the extra chapters, the notes, the random ideas on notepad and the entire physical notebook where I jotted down ideas before starting the book =). =D

We can hope to read the missing parts sooner or later :D
One of my favourite authors has re-edited his book and made it a graphic novel, you have no idea how happy this made me: it's always good to read every single snippets you have to offer :D

It would be great :D

@@ I think Cai has enough crazy for me. If I get into Begone's head, I'll be ridiculous and I might not come back to normal.

LOL I need to take away your whip =P
BTW, I'm too lazy to make an actual blog post about it, but here is one of the covers for NSI I went through. (Definitely love Cai in this picture, but ultimately I liked the "feel" of the other cover") Let me know if this is too boring =D I'll stop linking to those posts LOL

I liked the cover you ended up choosing better :) so much color, it fits the Cai in my mind better. And please don't stop posting things. Loving it!

Yeah, I probably need to be whipped a few times while trying to write. I'll let you keep it if you promise to whip me into a frenzy of lustful wordsmithing!
Glad you liked the one I picked. It wasn't all that difficult a choice. While I loved the image of Cai-so vulnerable and quiet in that pose-it didn't have the vibrancy and the swirl of color that surrounds him all the time.

It's sad that I'm such a trusting and naive person...oh, wait, no I'm not!

I like this one a lot, it shows the vulnerability of Cai and also his introspective mood but the other one it's maybe better :)

I won't be complaining:0
Agent Riley intrigues me because there wasn't much about him in SG so I want to know what he's got that would have Cai going "uh uh uh":p

LOL Elaine <3
Riley is an interesting guy. What he has is a very solid core and he's a kind person, which I think Cai needs =D. So it's all good!

I loved it. Each characters are awesome. I love everything in your book. Long time I have not laughed so much reading a book. THANK YOU.
So of course, I have been looking for all the SG stuff I could find ...and I found this thread. Wow. I think I'm addicted to them.
And I am so glad your husband and friends made you change your ending...because I would have been so sad and mad and sad and mad, well I think you get the picture...I even don't want to think about it.
Oh, and I am so excited to know you're going to write short stories for Austin and Peter. Awesome!! I cannot wait!!
And Cai, I cannot wait to read his story either, and this letter...Wow.
Did I tell you how awesome your book is??
:)

=D Thank you so much. Wow waking up sick this morning seemed the worst thing, but then this and another message. I don't even care about my cold LOL. <3
PS: I'm a little addicted to them too =)

Dani, I'm going to join the chorus and add that I too love each of your characters. They each have such depth and the time and research you put in is evident. I have a dear friend who has bipolar disorder and there have been times where it caused quite a roller coaster ride, for both him and those who love him. I think you've portrayed that aspect of Cai well, and I'll be interested to see if/how it comes into play in NSI.
I enjoy all the humor you include in your writing. I was laughing uncontrollably while reading Austin's biology class antics! How did you come up with that?!
Thank you for sharing the Cai spoilers, especially the letter, such a great

Oh geez Mandy, how did I miss this? Sorry that I didn't get back to you!
My sister-in-law actually called to tell me that when it happened. I logged into GR and sat in stunned silence (which is just another miracle btw) for about ten minutes before I did some pretty embarrassing dancing around the house Heh.

Jilly, thanks so much for reading all this thread =D It's fairly huge and I have such a good time reading it. It's really hard to let go of Austin and Peter, so having a forum to discuss them is like having them front and center in my life again. With all my focus on Cai now, they are just two happy people in the background. I'm so glad you enjoyed them.
Cai's bipolar will definitely come into play in NSI. Like Peter's Tourette's making everyone think he was cold or unemotional, Cai's BP has a definite affect on his life. We'll see how that changes his life because I think, for me at least, it's important that people see BP is both manageable and dangerous/serious. And that love sees past all of that.
I know humor is so subjective, so I'm glad that SG and Austin worked for you. I think humor balances out the sad and tragic lessons life hands us, so I try to equalize the terrible with levity. As for the biology class incident, that was all Austin's psyche. The characters become as real to me as they do, I hope, for readers. Which means that I try and go with whatever conjures up as I'm writing.
Hopefully, the humor in Cai's story, which will be very different, will have that same balance and I can only hope that connects with readers as well. (The letter is one of those character moments when I hear voices-but I'm only crazy on Mondays and Wednesdays. Promise!).
