Your Local Libraries

Yes, I do know the something 'special' that you mean.
I nearly mentioned it...but I thought it was probably too rude to share with the others here. Folks, so you know what Tasha and I are talking about. There are some structures (for lighting) at Tasha's library that I make rude fun of. ;)

Oh! ok, think I got it now.. :) I don't need enablers, I am already motivated. But I agree, a library is inspiring :)
haha. :) Before I joined my library I was a casual reader(one or two books a month) who came to GR once a month to add those books and maybe post in a group. Now? My addiction is out of control!
Personally, before I joined GR, reading a book could last for months.. I wasn't that excited. I didn't know what I was missing :P Then GR is really something. Talk to people about same interests or books, know about more books (new and old).. Now, I visit the site many times per day! And I read a lot more as well :)

Hello Tasha, Terri and Bobby! and hello to all of you :P Good to be here and good to find you here! :))
I have been looking at all the cool stuff I can buy at my libraries this season. These are arts and crafts done by young adults and teens. It is called Y Shop.

I live way out in a rural area too and our local libraries are not very big either. It is a shame that small bush libraries are under funded and under utilised.I am lucky that the libraries in the next Shire are outstanding with good funding in denser populated areas.
I was so happy when I found out a year or so ago that I was allowed to be a member, even though I was not a citizen of that shire.
Terri wrote: "How do the new renovations look? Much changed?"Yes. The big desk has gone and there are "pods" for staff scattered around. Electronic self check outs have been installed. Some nice relaxing reading areas have been installed with tables and comfy chairs to curl up in. They are also supplying board games to play in the library if you are so inclined. Turning the library into a social hub, which I approve of.
That's good. They are the best kind of libraries. Libraries that are set up for a community to chill out in, as opposed to what libraries can sometimes be (the old school type). Where you go to find books, use the computer, do a class or study. Now they are starting to include a kids area, some (like mine) include a small coffee shop, and places for people to sit and hold quiet conversations. Our library even has an open air cinema on the roof where they play old movies. Libraries are really starting to change their attitudes towards what it means to provide for a modern community.
Sigh !Our local is pretty bad. I was so excited on Friday when they announced digital lending.
Got my pin number and went to site, sigh !, talk about awful, a total of 112 books available.
The wierd thing is that if someone else rents a digital copy you have to wait for it to be returned.
Just far to much for my tiny mind to understand.
I got excited when my library started digital and audio books online (this was back when I was about to get an ereader/tablet and I thought I would like ebooks). But like your library John, the selection was poor. Majority Young Adult or Self Help type books. There was nothing I would have been interested in in there History category. They also work like yours. You need to wait in line for the ebook or audiobook.
Mine has a good selection of both. They just started magazines on digital too and my Mom is saving a serious amount of money because of it.Digital copies are the same as paper copies for a library, they have to buy the rights and have a lending time. It depends on how their contract works.
Mine has just started a new program where you can pick your lending time from 1 day to 30 days which is better than the 1, 2 or 3 weeks that were the options with the last one.
My library has a good selection, a good online setting, and I almost always get an ILL when I request it. Twice i have gotten ILL's from University libraries.
Anne wrote:...I almost always get an ILL when I request it. Twice i have gotten ILL's from University libraries."Anne, do you have to pay for ILL? Our fee is $5.00 per item. Almost seems better to buy the book!

I don't know about Anne's library, but my library does not charge for ILL.
Margaret wrote:I don't know about Anne's library, but my library does not charge for ILL." Free sounds good to me! $5.00 to "rent" a book for 20 days is pricey.
Mark wrote: "What is ILL?" Oh duh...lol, that may not help! When a local library within our system does not have a book, they go outside the system, like to a university or a large library, and request to borrow the item.
We have that here but it's only within our county library system, I think they can request books from the Tyne and wear central library
Monica wrote: "Anne wrote:...I almost always get an ILL when I request it. Twice i have gotten ILL's from University libraries."Anne, do you have to pay for ILL? Our fee is $5.00 per item. Almost seems better t..."
No, thank God-they are free. we have a great library. No late fees. Only time you pay late fees is for ILL's
Mine doesn't charge for ILL either. We can borrow 60 print books plus 6 digital books. There is however US$0.02/book late fees for the print books.
2 cents?? That's like having no fees... :)I pay 35 cents per day for normal books and $1 for express or ILL's that are overdue. And as some people know, I am constantly racking up the fees....I have to pay them off at $25 to keep borrowing.
Well, the plot thickens! Thanks to all your responses (and I am a bit envious of "free") I went back and re-read the library FAQs thinking that surely I had overlooked something...and I did. This is even worse than I thought...here's the library's stance on ILL:Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is available...There is a $5.00 per item search fee for this service, whether we find the item or not.
Ouch...won't be using that service!
I wonder if you do the actual search through something like WorldCat, would they still charge the $5?I'm not a big library user, and the only time I ever used ILL was at Uni.
When I moved back to my hometown after Uni, I went to renew my library card in the event that they have a digital copy of something I could otherwise not afford or get in a reasonable amount of time (older books for the most part). I hadn't used this card since 1997, and I still had a 25cent fine for a late fine.
Wow, $5 whether you get the book or not.....that seems pretty harsh. My to-buy list would be a lot longer if I had a $5 fee for ILL's here. I've been a big time library user since I got a library card at age 6, I've got my library card number memorized because I put in so many requests online. :)
D wrote: "I wonder if you do the actual search through something like WorldCat, would they still charge the $5?..."Might be worth asking.
When I did my first ILL I checked World cat first and when i submitted my request I added in 'notes' two of the nearest libraries where it was available.
When it arrived it had come from another state and not either of the closer alternatives I gave them. I wondered whether some libraries, at the other end, will decline an ILL.
Perhaps based on the popularity of the book they may not want to send it away on ILL.
Monica, $5 whether they find it or not. Is certainly greedy!
With ILL in Victoria, you do it yourself on line and select exactly which copy you want from the library you want.
At my library it $1 US for any ILL and the due date varies according to the lending library (anywhere from 2 weeks to the most I've seen is 5 weeks). There is no grace period for overdue books and the fee is $1 for the 1st day and $.5 for everyday past that.I currently have 2 ILLs out and owe the library $5 for ILL fees. I'll have to get them paid soon, before they start telling my I can't have any more books :D
On a different topic....(not that there is anything wrong with the current one, only I have something else to post about). My hubby is in the running for a new job and if he gets this new job then he won't be able to go to the library for me as the job has him travelling north (away from the libraries) rather than travelling south.
Because we live half an hour north of the most northern library in the library 'family' I use, I can't often get there and hubby drops in there in the afternoons after work to pick up and drop off for me.
If he gets the new job he won't be going passed my library anymore.
