Me either, Dawn! I usually have 3 to 6 items on loan. I could not believe it when they told me 300. I moved from Georgia (USA) just over a year ago and, there in my county, you could borrow no more than 20 at one time.
They have reduced it at my library from 100 to 60. I used to take out a lot of movies when I didn't have digital TV and I'd have 20 or 30 movies out at a time. Not anymore, I don't have more than a dozen books out at a time now. I have 7 at the moment. :)

My library system only allows 30 at the same time. And 14 reserves.I don't think I have ever had 30 out at once. 12 I think is the most I have out at the same time.
Our library allows 15 check outs and 15 on hold at the same time, but that is per indivual, so if you have a large family you could end up with half the library at your home. The library is a county system with 7 branches and one more planned, and if the item you want is in the system there is no ILL fee.
The check out period is for three weeks with a one week grace period before they start charging late fees. One can renew a book up to three times, unless someone is on hold for it, then one can't renew it.
ILLs cost $1 per book and there is no renewal and no grace period for late fees.

Oh, and my library allows a maximum of 5 books borrowed and 5 on hold...no ebooks loans. Doesn't exist. :(When I'm on withdrawal, I download Kindle freebies. Results are between depressing and hilarious. I understand that indie authors have to start somehow, but some of them could at least make their mother (best friend, greengrocer) read an advanced copy before publishing.
Simona wrote: "Tell them you are curvy and experienced. No one wants an anorexic teenager as a libr..."LOL! I think that the interview went well. Now, I have to wait until the end of next week, after they interview everybody and decide. Ho hum...
Simona wrote: "Oh, and my library allows a maximum of 5 books borrowed and 5 on hold...no ebooks loans. Doesn't exist. :(..."WOW! Only 5 out at once. That would be painful. You poor thing.
I GOT THE JOB!!!!! I am so excited! It is PERFECT for me because it is parttime, at the library, and I get to wear jeans, sneakers, and a library tee-shirt!! Yea for me!
Darla V wrote: "I GOT THE JOB!!!!! I am so excited! It is PERFECT for me because it is parttime, at the library, and I get to wear jeans, sneakers, and a library tee-shirt!! Yea for me!"Congrats - that's really good news! Reference or circulation?
Darla V wrote: "I GOT THE JOB!!!!! I am so excited! It is PERFECT for me because it is parttime, at the library, and I get to wear jeans, sneakers, and a library tee-shirt!! Yea for me!"Wonderful, Darla. I always wished now that I had majored in Library Science for my Master's instead of Education which i hated. I would have really been in my element working in a library. In the US, most libraries, including those in Florida require a Master's degree in library science.
Would it be 'a Master's degree in library science or the equivalent' perhaps?I think Darla's work history in Military IT would look good on her resume. :-)
Thank you everybody!I am just a page, reshelving books and "reading" the shelves in only one branch. I will work throughout that whole branch; reference, magazines, movies, CDs, and books of all sorts.
I know Anne, I learned that by asking around and reading about a variety of library jobs. I know that VA, GA, and MO all require the Master's in library science, no equivalent. Certainly somebody with your degree should be able to do the job no problem. All of the Library Degrees that I investigated entailed much of the same education courses that teachers must take.
Terri, my job in the Navy was Electronics (called an ET for Electronics Technician), not IT. I worked on communication and cryptologic equipment and I calibrated and repaired electronic test equipment. Although, I think the fact that I had been in the Navy fascinated my interviewers. They kept asking all kinds of extraneous questions about it that did not pertain to the interview! I think that it may have been what swayed them my way.
Ha ha ha! No biggie, Terri, how would you know? I just thought that I would clarify what a USNavy ET is, a little.I found that clown super scary in the book but, knowing that Tim Curry played the clown in the movie, I got too distracted from the plot, instead focusing on him and his acting. I really like him, he is really good at playing creepy roles.

I am retired and disabled now so it is moot for me. when I lived in a small town 50 miles East of Tampa, i thought about going to the Univ. of So. Fl. to get it, but the thought of working all day and driving back and forth 50 miles each way in the dark was a definite turn off. When I moved near Gainesville, the Univ. of FL. did not offer it. That was 24 years ago, so it might now. I agreee, i could have done the work, but no one would give me a break, unfortunately.
So sorry, Anne. Nowadays, you can go to college clear across the country due to many internet-based degrees. I attend ODU in Virginia, now and again, working ever so slowly on my BS. I moved away from there in 2008.
Distance education is a terrific thing. I was looking into it earlier this year. (Couldn't afford to do anything in the end though). What amazes me, was that if I could not find what I wanted in Oz, I could have done it through any other country in the world.
I have just moved over from one 'local' library to a different local library. All part of the same family of libraries. This one is brand new and, take a breath, there is a coffee shop inside!!!! Last week I went there for the first time as a new member and sat down and had a latte as I flicked through books. It was so relaxing.
This is my new library

Here, take a look inside

Below the image you'll see three round light grey icons. One is an arrow/play icon. If you click on that you can look through a slide show of interior pictures for my library.

Oh wow! Looks fantastic. Hope it has a terrific selection for you.
I only realised, after looking through the slideshow of interior photos that I directed you guys to check out, that along that outside walkway, where there are red timber slats on one side and a wall of dark glass on the right...that THAT dark glass is two sided.I never knew it was two sided glass, black from the outside, clear from the inside...and now I am wondering if I ever made a spectacle of myself as I walked down that walkway to go into the entranceway...I hope no-one caught me picking my nose or trying to pluck my undies out of my butt, thinking no-one on the inside could see me through that dark glass....:/
Anne wrote: "My Master's in Education did not qualify, Unfortunately."I have a degree in library science and yet no job :/
This was my former library.
very boring...even it did have this out the front.

I am quite content to swap beachside library for rural village library. I am more into pasture than sand. :)
Terri wrote: "That's a shame Georgia."yes, it really is.. I would love to work in a library or even at a bookstore but with all this crisis going on it's impossible to find a job in this field.. "Neighborhood" libraries are not in common here, so Goodreads fills this gap for me :P
Oh, and I love the photos posted here! They all seem beautiful buildings and good libraries :)

Now I am really green with envy. The new library seems fantastic, and still the smaller one is a dream one, "avec les pieds dans l'eau"!!!!, and it was the one where kind librarians were always able to find tons of books for you...
Suddenly I feel I'm living in the middle of rural Congo. At the time of Dr Livingstone. :(
Yes, that one at the beach is where the librarians are not very nice, but the new one! Holy cow! They are just so nice and friendly. I can't get over how nice they are compared to the library we left. :D
Georgia,Do you just have a large county library? As opposed to a few large ones and smaller 'feeder' ones in a single network?
It worked, I just needed to be more patient and try again. ;)Very nice. I like the kids room too. :) However, I think your
Iibrary is missing a certain...oh shall we say...something 'special'. They should have spoken to the architects at my library. ;) haha
But really, just gorgeous!!! Although, the beach at your ther library s very cool too!
Terri wrote: "I only realised, after looking through the slideshow of interior photos that I directed you guys to check out, that along that outside walkway, where there are red timber slats on one side and a wa..."Haha!! I'm sure you made someone's day. :)

You can borrow through the online ILL but I have not had to do that, yet so I do not know it's rules. However, I have done that through my college library (online) for journal articles. For that purpose, they make a copy of the article and it does not need to be returned.
My library system has an innumerable amount of reading and craft activities and classes, from self-improvement to gardening, for people of all ages, year round. They even have free online courses, of course they are not accredited but they could give a leg up when starting a certificate program such as medical assisting and coding. Most courses are for personal things such as Microsoft Office and budgeting, though.
I wonder how soon I will find out about the job.
