Your Local Libraries
Oh I don't know about that.....no..lol...of course you are right. We don't' after all, have pictures of an everyday looking guy in our threads eg Jack Black or Philip Seymour Hoffman. Lol. Being cut does help the movie goer to believe the movie.Guys and girls appreciate the build of those Spartans..for different reasons.

I usually have a bunch on hold too so they know my name..."I too have "rediscovered" my library in the past couple of years. If they don't have what I'm looking for, they order it and e-mail me wen its in!! I've been tardy quite a few times because I get all backed up trying to read all of Terri's recommendations but I'll gladly pay $4-5 every couple of months in late fees as opposed to $9.99 for Kindle books or $20 plus for hardbacks. I still buy books that I REALLY want but the library has saved me literally hundreds of $$$$.

Oh no, they shouldn't!! My librarian is a grumpy middle age lady, so yes, I prefer to see her correctly dressed. But these three...I'm looking for that library.
I got carried away by another thought and forgot to mention my own library which I absolutely love. It is the Alachua County Library in the county which includes Gainesville and the Univ. of Florida. It is a medium sized city, and though the collection is not as large as my birth city, Cincinnati, Ohio, it is definitely a great one, offering the Inter Library Loan and also having no late fees. That is something which i consider most valuable. It is rare to find a library with no late fees. And they allow people in the next tiny county (mine) to have cards also, free too. God bless libraries , especially for people like me of modest means who cannot afford to purchase the huge amount of books I read.
I don't want my buff Spartans dancing or anything. I just want them to be tough and firm. "These books you have taken out, woman. I admire them much, as I admire you for your round bottom and bust. Would you care to speak with me of scribing over a roasting pig and some watered down wine?"
"Why Leonidas. Are you asking me out on a date?"
:D

maybe because 'employees' have to be friendly to customers or they lose their jobs. Volunteers don't need to care.

Hahaha! Good stuff. :)
I think that my librarian would be happy to work there if she should't have to lend books. She deeply distrust people bringing HER books at home, she doesn't like to give advice to readers, she doesn't lend books if you have forgotten the library card (even if you are there three times a week), she's always too tired to register donations and she doesn't like kids to go to the library.I have to say, this last one is, for me, the worst. Kids should be able to go to the library, search, discover books and fall hopelessly in love with them.
I think she doesn't like her work - which is not, I think, a justification.

The men and women at my library will actually walk up to you and ask if they can help if you should have the least bit quizzical look on your mug!! They all seem very committed. The ONLY thing that bothers me is there is security inside and out. Guess that's a sign of the troubled times and a necessary evil.
I order most of my books online and pick them up at the local branch. The people there are so nice. When my friend picks up thee books they will always ask how I am doing, and if I call them, somr of them are almost like good friends.
I have security at my library too, the park next door is a drunk and druggy hangout unfortunately. Still having the security around isn't too bad and they are all really nice guys so I think that helps.
Wow, security at libraries. What is going wrong with the world. Most of the libraries in our 'cluster' are chill. The smaller one that is closest to hubby's work (where he picks up books for me) if a lovely place, but grumpy ladies. However, the main library..the one that feeds the others is pleasant I suppose. Some ladies will help you in the aisles or smile on their way passed.
I think there is 8 or 9 libraries in my local library family. All but three are beachside towns and so most of them you can go into wearing flip flops (thongs) with sand all over your feet. It is very laid back. Very beachside Aussie chill.
We don't have security per se, but the library is 1/2 block from the police station/city hall and right across the street from the local high school, so it does tend to keep the undesirables down.

The books I request within my own 25 library system come within a week if/once they are available. The ones that come from the ILL take an average of 3 months. And I have one book that has shown it's on order, as in being bought new, since March. The bigger the system gets the slower those two things are. But considering I can use 25 different libraries all within 2 hours and all on one library card that costs me nothing......I don't think I can complain. :)
I get inter library loans (ILL) fairly quickly generally. Chris mentioned in another thread that at his library when he worked there it is 10 days or under from request placed through ILL to contacting the library member with their book.
After thinking about it, I think that it is about that time frame when I request an ILL.
However, I was most impressed yesterday with my helpful library system.
I reserved Steven Pressfield's Virtues of War for our August Group Read. It showed in the catalogue as available and yet the library, after a week, still hadn't sent it to me. I emailed them. They rang me shortly after to apologise and say that book is now missing.
I had told them in my email that it was for a book club read and this seemed important to them. They wanted to get it to me in time for the group read start date of August 1.
They then tracked it down for ILL at a fairly close library elsewhere in the state and I will have it by early next week! I was so impressed. The lady that rang me back to tell me they could get me a copy was sort of excited that they would get it to me in time for the Book club group read. :-) My local libraries are currently my local heroes. :-)
The Virtues of War: A Novel of Alexander the Great
Our library has hot titles too. With a 14 day limit. I would give a 600 page book a go on 14 days no prob. But I would be hesitant to get out a book of that size if it was 7 day.
Good to hear you're enjoying your book. :-)

Seriously cool. This is my kind of vending machine.
For those don't know....I have a dreadful habit of racking up overdue fines at the library. I'm always having to pay them off so I can take out more books. The reason I mention this is because I was checking out my fines and I haven't accrued any since May. Almost 4 months with no fines....I am impressed with myself. :D
Well done! I guess this is because you are really chewing through them now. With our group reads, buddy reads and all the books you keep finding via this group you are probably turning over books more than you used to. Guessing though. :-)

Show-off...I'm about $8 in the red!!
I'm still $6.55 in the red.....I found out today that I have so many more library resources than I knew. I can apparently take out books in 17 neighboring library systems without going the ILL route if I drive there myself. In fact I can take out library books anywhere in my province with a special library card if I want.
And if I can't find a book I want in the ILL system they can apparently search all of Canada for one and I only pay if there is a charge from the other library.
So awesome! :)

Terri wrote: "How is it that you only just found this out! Lol."Never occurred to me that it was possible. A girlfriend mentioned that she took out books at her boyfriends place up the valley. So I checked it out......
I have applied for a parttime job at the library and have an interview Friday morning! I am so excited! On the other hand, if I don't get it, I will be so bummed. I am afraid that they will judge me for being fat and old and not hire me.

LOVE that vending maching idea!

Hope it goes well for you. My dream is to retire and work in a used book store. :)
Always wanted to open a bookstore that also had Maine products: horseback riding, blueberries and lobster tails. Would name it Canter Berry Tales!!
Bobby wrote: "Always wanted to open a bookstore that also had Maine products: horseback riding, blueberries and lobster tails. Would name it Canter Berry Tales!!"Lol. Good name. Horseback riding, blueberries and lobster tails? Three of my favourite things.

Good luck - my wife says it's the best job she has ever had.
I use not my local library, which is awful, but one in another suburb which happily encourages out of area members. It's funded by local government.
Yes they inter library loan, but limit it to 5 books per fortnight (two week period).
No charge for late fees. They just put a stop on your borrowing.
I can have as many books as I want. Most I every got was about 21 in one week.
Loan period is 4 weeks for their books; usually 6 weeks for ILLs.
They have a lot of kids programmes and literacy programmes, as well as encouraging local writers and artists.

I think that it's also a necessity. Gerald Butler couldn't have his usual sexy guy role in a movie if he had the look of Jabba the Hutt!
