Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1826 comments Hey guys - Just wanted to let you know that I have created a certificate of participation for this challenge which I'll post on photobucket - at the end of February I will send everyone a message with a link to their certificate. If you have private profile I won't be able to do this unless you add me as a friend - so if you would like your certificate please do so before the end of the challenge! Also if you would like the name on your certificate to be different than I have you listed on the scoreboard let me know (I already plan to use just your basic name minus the ages or locations that I used to differentiate between people with the same names).

Sara ♥ (saranicole) I just finished What I Wish My Christian Friends Knew about Judaism for 15 pts. I'm now at 235.

Next, I think I'm going to read Revolution Is Not a Dinner Party , which takes place in China.

I'm also about 1/3 through the audiobook of Pompeii: A Novel by Robert Harris, for my book where the main character has the same profession as me (Civil Engineer). I'm also SLOWLY working on Northanger Abbey , which is my started-but-never-finished book.

Elizabeth (NC) | 209 comments Angie, What did you think of the Chocolate Chip Cookie Murder? Is the series worth it? I love mysteries and am a sucker for a good series.

message 1713: by Alice (new)

Alice (aliceg) | 254 comments I was struggling with knowing what book I could read for my new years resolution. My resolution was to build on my friendships I currently have and to meet new people by not pulling out of social engagements. You see I'm not great at sticking to plans due to struggling with reoccurring depression. Towards the end of last year I really concentrated on sorting myself out at work and lessen my sick days and I felt that I'd done pretty well at that. So I decided at the new year that I would now concentrate on my social life now that my work life is a lot more stable! Anyway I don't mean to tell you my whole life story I just thought I'd explain how this book fitted into this task. This evening was the book group that I go to and we were discussing revolutionary road and then actually seeing the film at the cinema (we meet in a cinema bar each month and any books we link to films we get concessionary prices). Book group is one of the things I do each month that in the past has suffered a little bit because although I'll have read the book when it gets to the day to meet I chicken out of going because I don't feel up to it. So having earlier this month wondered how I could get revolutionary road into this challenge this week I realised that if I actually attended the book group this evening then it would be related to my new year's resolution.

I hope that this is not a too tenuous link Cynthia!! If I'm allowed it then I have just completed:

15 POINT TASK
8. Read a book that relates to your new year's resolution.
Revolutionary Road by Richard Yates

Point total: 165

(the film of the book was good by the way. I was uncertain to what i thought of the book when i was reading it but the film has definitely added to it. It also stuck to the book extremely well!)

message 1714: by Bonnie (new)

Bonnie | 271 comments 15 Points:

2. Santa/Elf/Reindeer: The Elfstones of Shannara Shannara Series, Book Two by Terry Brooks.

It was interesting to listen to the audiobook of a series that many accuse of being a blatant rip-off of the Lord of the Rings while reading the real LoTR trilogy. I mostly just thought it was kind of dull (sorry to any Terry Brooks diehards; maybe audiobook just wasn't the best way to go about it. I had to struggle to concentrate on listening instead of zoning out).

And I looked at the book description of Fat Girl and it sounds brutal just from that. Does everyone who writes memoirs have exceedingly traumatic childhoods? Not that I've read that many memoirs, but the ones I have are filled with tragedy (i.e., I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings).

Yeah..... you'll notice that none of my books are terribly "difficult"... A lot of YA Fiction (which I love) and romance novels. But I have read some very interesting books that I never would have otherwise.

Liz M El wrote: "Liz, I loved Don Quixote... are you enjoying it? - and I like to see when people actually challenge themselves on tasks! It's refreshing!"

Mind you, not all of my selections have been challenging; I have a tendency to pick the shortest works on the tbr-list that qualify for the various tasks.

That said, I have been meaning to read Don Quioxte ever since middle school Spanish class. I am grateful to Cynthia & the challenge for providing the necessary encouragement.

I am enjoying DQ as long as I read it in small doses. I am finding lots of little tidbits that make me giggle or snort in every chapter. While I realize the violence is the 17th Century equivalent of loony-tunes cartoons, when you empathize with the characters the beatings they take in almost every little episode are not that funny.

So, as enjoyable as it is, needing to read in small doses makes me despair of finishing it by the end of the month!
