message 705: by C. (last edited Jul 04, 2012 12:49AM) (new)

C. C. (cjoybellc) | 42 comments Hello,

A good day to everyone!

Today I was very surprised to find just one of my two books on my author profile. Apparently, my first book disappeared! So I attempted to "reinstall" my book onto my official author profile page, when I was so surprised to get the warning "This book already belongs to author... http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/... and I clicked that "author who's supposed to be me" and found my book there!

I think that perhaps someone added me as an author here, without first checking if I was already here, but still, how was that person able to remove my book from my official page and move it onto the unofficial one? How is that possible? Now my real page can't show my book because the other profile took it.

Please remedy this, I would greatly, greatly appreciate it! And if some sort of "vaccine" could be developed to prevent this from ever happening to any author again, I would be very thankful!

xx
This is my official GR author profile: C. JoyBell C.

An ingram import changed it months ago; as it appears the book was added to the system by ingram imports, new imports could change that data. I've now corrected it, so it should show up on your author page and the now-blank author page should get cleaned up with the monthly script meant to take care of them. rivka got the incorrect page.

As for how it's possible for someone to edit the author field of a book (which wasn't the case here, anyway), that's a necessary site feature. As you'll see if you browse the other threads, books incorrectly appear on author pages quite frequently and need to be disambiguated, among other various issues for which we need to edit book data.

dong!

message 711: by C. (last edited Jul 04, 2012 04:39PM) (new)

C. C. (cjoybellc) | 42 comments Thank you very much, Amara! And Melody! I understand what happened. Initially I thought that someone had "stollen" my book off of my author page! I was quite shocked! Of course, earlier in the day, I had just watched the movie "Unknown" with Liam Neeson, in which he played a character who's identity was apparently taken away from him! hahha! Then I saw my book was gone and someone else who was named after me had "taken" it! hahhahah!

Thank you so much! I'm so happy this was remedied! Very thankful! Is there a way that I can prevent my books from disappearing from my author page in the future?

xx

p.s. I also thank Rivka! Although I might not know what "dong" means! :D

Nenangs | 464 comments Anna,
did you mean
Roger M. Kean
and
Roger Michael Kean

if yes, both are not GR author and we, common librarian, can merge such as those. no need for supers.

however i'm not familiar with both names, so I'll leave this to you.

C. C. (cjoybellc) | 42 comments Just a little more information on this; you see, when I created my GR author page, the book that had disappeared yesterday was already in the GR database, (and as I've learned from your message above, it was added to the database by Ingram Imports) so I added The Sun Is Snowing to my page, as well as my second book which I had to input into the database myself. My books were happily on my profile, for quite a while. I only noticed the disappearance of The Sun Is Snowing, yesterday. From your explanation, I understand that Ingram Imports recently created that author page for me (probably unaware that there was already a page in my name here) and then added my book to it, hence the disappearance of my book from my official page. So, correct me if I'm wrong, but this means that only Ingram Imports could possibly be responsible for my book disappearing from my page, but aside from that, there's no chance that my books could just disappear and reappear on another page in my name. Is this right? Meaning that, if sometime in the future someone (not Ingram Imports) decides to make an author page here in my name, and tries to add my books, they won't be able to add my books to that new profile because the books are already in my own profile, am I right? Because if this is not so, I find that very strange how anyone would be able to grab a book off of an author's profile and put it elsewhere, meanwhile, the author is not able to grab that book back and return it to his/her profile, by his/her self!

No. If a librarian edited one of your books to be under another name (or a slightly different spelling of your name), they would show up on that other profile. However, unlike the imports, which are automated, that would require someone deliberately making that change.

It seems quite unlikely.

message 716: by Amara (last edited Jul 04, 2012 11:14PM) (new)

Amara Tanith (aftanith) A little more clarification in addition to what rivka said:

1) Ingram imports changed the book's record to match ingram's data; that would mean that in ingram's record, your name has been misspelled. As ingram imported the book initially, the error became reflected in Goodreads' database. If a user had been the source of the data in the book's author field, this wouldn't have occurred because imports are set not to overwrite member-input data.

2) Editing books doesn't quite work how you think it does; we don't create a profile, then add books to it. We edit the details of the book, and profiles are automatically created to reflect the data.

Using a (quite unlikely, as rivka said) example, if someone glanced at one of your books and assumed "C. JoyBell C." was a typo of "C.C. Joybell", they would go into the book and change the author field to read "C.C. Joybell". Once they submitted this change, the system would automatically create a "C.C. Joybell" page for the book to attach to. To fix it, someone would report the error in this thread so that rivka could edit the incorrect profile and change the spelling to your correct name; that would merge the profiles and you'd get your book back.

C. C. (cjoybellc) | 42 comments Rivka and Amara, thank you very much for all of this information! Thanks for being so helpful, what a helpful group of people here! Bless your hearts! God bless the GR librarians! :)

Have a wonderful day!

I tried, but it said that the author was responsible for handling it b/c he's a Goodreads author.

Got 725.

Nutkin, users post links here so I can merge profiles that regular librarians cannot -- those belonging to members of the GR Author Program.

Why do you think this is the same person? That book was clearly removed from the GR Author's list.

Kathie (katmom) (katmom52) | 3 comments Good afternoon, this new author has a page and her book has a page. But she doesn't show an AUTHOR page:

http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/... author

book:
http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/14...

ISBN
9781612131061 (ebook)

Thanks for blending them!

message 742: by Amara (last edited Jul 07, 2012 03:47PM) (new)

Amara Tanith (aftanith) Kathie, she already has an author page (you linked to it), and her book is already attached to it. She just needs to claim it, which she can do here.

Thanks for the prompt info!

That message isn't entirely accurate; you have to be staff to alter the profiles of those that are in the author program, while we librarians can only alter unclaimed profiles; unfortunately, it's Sunday, and staff members usually aren't around for the weekend. When rivka gets back (probably tomorrow), she'll be able to get this sorted out for you.

Just to give you a head's up. ;)
