Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments More likely to call it Aussie than Straya.

message 11452: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Hubby said the word Straya has been around for decades. He thinks it first showed up on the Billy Birmingham 'Twelfth Man' recordings.
I had never heard of it until this you tube video came out. I won't be using it. :\

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments I think he's right. The first time I recall hearing it was Billy Birmingham.

Terri | 19576 comments Hi Linda,
Can I be honest? The LL is distracting to the eye when I go to read your posts. My eye keeps getting drawn to it on every one of your posts.

And there are only a few of us that know why you are putting LL at the start of your posts. A lot of members are going to wonder what LL is supposed to mean if they don't know why you are doing it.

Do you think you might be comfortable putting the LL at the end of your posts? Instead of the start?

As in 'signing off' LL?

Well where I am, not a thing but the west coast of the uk has it bad. But 2 to 3 inches normally puts us in panic mode.

Gretchen (eab2012) Terri wrote: "Oh that's sad. I just heard that Colleen McCullough passed away. Age 77."

I remember watching The Thorn Birds when it was on television with my grandma. I was too little to understand it at the time but looking back it seems like an odd choice for my very Catholic grandma. I suppose it was like the Harlequin's she read "only for the story".

message 11473: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments I was going to say. Thornbirds would be a bit steamy for little Gretchen. :)

message 11474: by Gretchen (new)

Gretchen (eab2012) My parents never really believed in a filter as far as television viewing was concerned. Dirty Dancing has always been one of my favorite movies. My mom and I use to watch it together all the time when I was little. The day I finally realized (view spoiler) was Earth shattering. My dad's idea of family movie night was Jaws or Rambo. Sometimes I think it's a miracle I turned out semi-alright. Maybe it came from the abundance of musicals my mom would make us watch. Saturday Night Fever counts as a musical, right?

message 11475: by Margaret, Sherlockian Sheila (new)

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments My mum used to take me to the cinema to see the Carry On movies. Her grasp on appropriate viewing for children was a little shaky.

Linda (ladylawyer8650) | 1702 comments The computer experts in this house do not belong to groups and have never put up a profile pic. They are no help. You already know I don't know how to do it. That does not mean I have not tried a million times to figure it out. The 'LL' drives me crazy. I am dropping that. I will continue to work on that profile pic. Now,do you want the pic to show me in formal attire, jeans and sweatshirt or in the nude? Lol

message 11480: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) I just thought it was funny Linda. I don't need you to have a picture up. I can tell it's you just from the way you write. :)

But if you want help putting up a profile pic, I can probably walk you through it as long as you have a picture on your computer that you want to use?? I don't think a nude one will give the right impression though.....

message 11481: by Linda (new)

Linda (ladylawyer8650) | 1702 comments Thank you, Dawn. For everything. Husband promised to fix me up with an avitar using the computer. I think the nudie comment motivated him. (He did not want me to embarrass myself, I guess.) I am saving the instructions you kindly gave me because I WANT to know how to do things by myself!

message 11482: by Linda (new)

Linda (ladylawyer8650) | 1702 comments I think I did it following Dawn's instructions! I picked the only picture available in that ping. place.

Well done Linda. Now I will always know it is you...unless you ever change you avatar..then you best tell us you changed it. :)

Terri | 19576 comments This is such a terrible thing. I don't even know what historic books and texts were lost, but I still feel ill about it.
I hope the most precious ones weren't lost and it was the modern book wing that burned down.

I scored 11 out of 12 as well - got number 10 wrong. Not bad for someone from the wrong side of the Pennines. I'm glad to see that Scott Dobson is featured on Goodreads.

I got 9 out of 12. A True Geordie. The ones I got wrong are new Geordie slang. My granda was a Geordie, so the really old slang is still part of my vocabulary. :D

Linda (ladylawyer8650) | 1702 comments Turner Classic Movies 31 days of OSCAR ran THE LION IN WINTER last night. I like that movie more every time I see it, but after reading Sharon Kay Penman's books on Henry II, it was especially good.
COS: I explained to my mother last night how I have an avitar showing the cover of ALICE'S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND. She had no more idea of what I was talking about than I do. She laughed when I said DEBBIE DOES DALLAS might have suited me better, but I know she was sending up a prayer thanking the Good Lord that raising me through those wild and wonderful and miserable teenage years of mine was over.

Terri | 19576 comments haha. Oh, Linda, your post was delightful. Thankyou for making me start my day over here in Australia with a smile. :)
I wish I had been a fly on the wall during that conversation with your Mum about avatars. Sounds like a colourful one.

Nope, here in Binghamton we had 9 inches. Boston was pretty well hit and of course Buffalo's in the snow belt so they always get socked.
