Andy | 1511 comments 18/20 didnt get the woman whose eyebrows met in the middle (still dont know who she is either....?) & not so hot on my Greek

message 11406: by Gretchen (new)

Gretchen (eab2012) The eyebrow lady is a Mexican painter. She was famous for her self portraits.

message 11407: by Mark (new)

Mark | 1885 comments Same here Jane and I got the eye brow lady wrong.

message 11408: by Jane (new)

Jane | 3480 comments No, I got her right but I missed the Oriental gentleman.

Darcy (drokka) | 2675 comments Gretchen wrote: "The eyebrow lady is a Mexican painter. She was famous for her self portraits."

Wasn't she somehow connected to Dali and Picaso?

Selma plays her in the biography.

message 11410: by Gretchen (new)

Gretchen (eab2012) I am not sure about the Dali/Picasso connections. She was known for her rather volatile marriage. Her husband was a big fan of other women.

Simona | 1453 comments 18/20. I got stuck on Gengis Khan and Aristotle (I agree with Jane, in this portrait he seemed too tame and soft...not ferocious at all!)

message 11412: by Kimber (last edited Jan 18, 2015 03:42PM) (new)

Kimber (kimberlibri) | 785 comments 17/20 Frieda Kahlo is the eyebrow lady. I missed Aristotle and two others but don't remember. Lot's of guesswork.

message 11413: by Simona (new)

Simona | 1453 comments I think she's Frida Kahlo, the wife of Diego Rivera. She's a famous painter, a strong woman with an unconventional life. I read her biography but it was from the library and I can't remember whose it was, there are several.

Simona, you're right. She's very distinctive-looking, isn't she?

message 11415: by Simona (new)

Simona | 1453 comments She is, and her paintings are very distinctive also. A bit morbid but fascinating.

Jane | 3480 comments Simona wrote: "She is, and her paintings are very distinctive also. A bit morbid but fascinating."

Have you ever investigated Remedios Varo? She is also Mexican--a surrealist. She is one of my favorite artists. My avatar is one of her pictures: The origin of the Orinoco.
That's me sitting in the boat [or whatever it is]. :)

message 11417: by Simona (new)

Simona | 1453 comments No, I don't know her. I'll check! Thank you Jane

Linda (ladylawyer8650) | 1702 comments Seahawks over Green Bay in overtime! FIDDLER ON THE ROOF running on TCM. Think I wore my remote control out going back and forth! For those new members, (welcome to the group) I get excited over football. Just about anything that could happen in a game happened in this game making it extra-exciting.

happy (happyone) | 2782 comments Why is it when I put in requests for the library to acquire books, they all come in at the same time? (retorical question) Mrs Happy brought another 7 home for me Saturday and a total of 11 this week :)

I am up to 16 right now, but thnx to Mrs Happy I was able to exceed the Library's max check out limit
It looks like I'll have to send a few back and put them on hold again :)

message 11421: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) That always happens to me with ILL's. I order 6 or 7 and then have to read them all in two weeks!

Linda (ladylawyer8650) | 1702 comments LL---There is another Linda active on Goodreads and within this group, but she has an identifying picture. I am keeping my nondescript non-photo ascribed by Goodreads. Linda with a picture and I, plain, will. likely be confused in the future. I will try to remember to add my initials at the beginnings of posts. (sic).

I only got 13, crumbs. Some of those are tricky. I only got Vincent right due to Doctor Who episode about him. Loved that episode. Such a sad man.

We were in Grindelwald and Grund. Got home today and have nothing but fantastic memories and sore thighs! What a memorable vacation.

message 11436: by Simona (new)

Simona | 1453 comments I don't know that area well, we usually go to Engadin. But Switzerland is beautiful in winter.

LL
Yes, I was referring to Linda with a pretty picture. I believe you are the one. I, too, am shocked that there are not more of us.
@Jane, I agree.

@Weather report! It is snowing in New England. The weather here is 34°F to 50°F in daytime, but I am honed in to the weather channel. Watching the snow up North makes me feel like we are cocooned in a winter wonderland here! I guess the Patriots got out before the blizzard started. It would be bad if they could not make it to the Super Bowl due to weather. Still, people with tickets may be disappointed if the roads and airports are not open. What is your weather like today?

message 11441: by Jane (new)

Jane | 3480 comments We were VERY lucky here in Binghamton, NY. 400 miles west of the City, we only got 2 or so inches; it really was no blizzard here.

message 11442: by Gretchen (new)

Gretchen (eab2012) I am staring at my calendar in disbelief. It is January in Minnesota and there is no snow in my yard. It's been 32F- 40F for a little over a week. While I love this weather, I can't help but thinks it means we are going to end up with snow until the end of April.

message 11443: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) Weather is pretty nice here. 10C (50F) and raining.

message 11444: by happy (new)

happy (happyone) | 2782 comments Ditto here on the weather - middle of Jan and 50F (10C)and all the snow is gone from my yard. I might actually get the Christmas lights down before spring :)

Terri | 19576 comments Linda,
If you gave yourself an avatar picture there would never, ever be any mix up on which Linda you are. :)

There are 11 Linda members. About four or five of which post in the group. About 4 of the Linda members don't have an avatar.

If you had an avatar, we'd always know it was you!

message 11446: by Jane (new)

Jane | 3480 comments Terri's right; for a long time I had only the generic sepia picture, then Terri convinced me to get an avatar. I'd assume there are lots of Janes in the group.

Terri | 19576 comments We had our national holiday this week. Australia Day.
This Aussie singer did up a song with lyrics to match our Australia Day. Thought some others might enjoy it. :)

Not many Australians actually say 'straya' instead of Australia. I certainly will never say Straya. Song's fun though.
