Allison | 1704 comments What? You people don't know about Scandal?? :/
Its so good! But it is rather like a soap opera for night.

message 10152: by Gretchen (new)

Gretchen (eab2012) I don't know if Scandal is shown outside of the U.S. It is definitely like a nighttime soap. It lives up to the name.

Kimber (kimberlibri) | 785 comments Is Scandal the one with Kerry Washington? I've been meaning to binge-watch it on Netflix.
Gretchen - It's interesting that you brought up seeing Tony Goldwyn always as Carl rather than whatever current character he is playing. I actually had a dream two nights ago about the part in Ghost wear he spills coffee on himself deliberately and thought to myself on waking, "I'll never see him as anything but Carl." Ironically I haven't even seen him in Scandal. The dream was out of left field!

message 10154: by Gretchen (new)

Gretchen (eab2012) Yes, Kerry Washington is in Scandal. Binge watching it is the best way to go. I keep three weeks at a time on my DVr because I don't like being kept waiting. Gosh how did I ever make it through my youth without DVr?

Allison | 1704 comments Lol Bobby :) I can't fault you for the Walking Dead. Although I've been told I'm too emotionally invested in that show.

message 10159: by Gretchen (new)

Gretchen (eab2012) I don't get zombies.

message 10160: by Allison (new)

Allison | 1704 comments I don't watch it for the zombies...

message 10161: by Margaret, Sherlockian Sheila (new)

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments I watch very little television. Sherlock. NCIS occasionally. Very occasionally. I used to be a dedicated watcher but it started going downhill in season 10.

Simona | 1453 comments And then I tried "What Famous 19th Century Writer would you be?" and I got Lewis Carroll. Meh...not really my kettle of fish. :P

message 10170: by Allison (new)

Allison | 1704 comments 7 for me but I was guessing on all of them. Then I took about 25 other quizzes...

I got Mark Twain.

And apparently if I were to die in a Shakespearean play, it would be by a stabbing from my enemy!

message 10172: by Gretchen (new)

Gretchen (eab2012) Twattle- My grandma use to warn me about too much twattle.

My author was Lewis Carroll. I don't agree with that description at all. If you ask anyone who knows me, dreamy and sensitive would not make a top ten list of my traits. I do really like kids though which is probably a good thing considering my line of work.

message 10173: by Margaret, Sherlockian Sheila (new)

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments Twattle I more or less worked out...because in my family it's referred to as twaddle.

Terri | 19576 comments Late to the party. Re: the discussion on bookcases.

As some of you may recall, a few months ago I bought a new black/brown Billy bookcase from Ikea.

I was thinking about asking for the doors for xmas. love those glass doors with the cherry blossom on them. I went on the Ikea site today to discover that they have changed the Billy design and the doors I used to like aren't available because they went with the previous Billy bookcases. The new Billy bookcase design only has one glass door design to pick from and they only fit on this brand new Billy design.

Damn. There goes my glass door dream for the Billy cases I already own.

message 10176: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) I've always loved the idea of glass doors on my bookshelves, maybe someday....

TV as a whole has gone downhill in the past few years, so I don't watch much either.

message 10179: by Margaret, Sherlockian Sheila (new)

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments Yeah, pretty much. Everything is guts and gore and I get bored very quickly.

I do still watch the occasional documentary, but unless the drama is clever and witty (like Sherlock is and like NCIS used to be) I can't be bothered with it.

I did enjoy the first season of Ripper Street, but they've put the second season on too late at night for me to watch. They did the same thing with Fargo.

message 10180: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 728 comments Billy is what I'm getting Terri!! But I'm adding the really skinny little one they do as an end piece for my odd collection os wee willie winkie candle holders, lol. I know an odd thing to collect but it's an "old" thing and I love them. I don't there will be enough room for all the books but it's a start.

message 10181: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments wee willie winkie candle holders? The old metal ones that you hold by the little handle?

I have one of those around here some place. IN the garage I think. Amoung the tool debris. I was never too sure of its age.
It came with this old farm when we bought it. Found it up in our old workers cottage which dates to the late 19th century. But the old worker's cottage was in use until the 90s so I wasn't sure if it was a modern replica.

message 10182: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 728 comments Yep that's them! I mostly look for brass ones, but I have some enamel ones as well. I have one made of an old artillery shell. What they called "war art"!? We don't have much variety here, in the uk they have some awesome ones, that I've seen on google. And there was a huge one in Narnia and Harry Potter, lol. I don't know why, I just like them, haha.

If you've not gone out yet and haven't watched the news, please don't aim for the Capital, Sparks St, or the Rideau Centre. I've been seeing little blurbs about that. I don't get to watch a lot of news during the day but it looks a little scary.

Its looking very scary there, watching it on bbc news channel.

Carol (ladygyn) | 304 comments It is a pity that some people have to murder and wreak havoc in the name of their beliefs. My prayers go out to Canada and all her brave citizens and her courageous government the world needs to pay attention especially those who feel these people are justified in their outrage enough to murder

message 10188: by Margaret, Sherlockian Sheila (new)

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments Have they identified the shooter as a terrorist?

Our news here is calling him a terrorist but not providing any evidence of it.

He could simply be a dickhead with a grudge against the government. Doesn't make him a terrorist under today's definition.

message 10189: by Jane (new)

Jane | 3480 comments The media always have to stir up fear and they put the worst spin on things.

message 10190: by Margaret, Sherlockian Sheila (new)

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments Yeah. Ours are being a pain. Paper full of the fear of Ebola, but not one mention that Nigeria has successfully contained their Ebola outbreak and has been declared Ebola free by WHO.

No, won't cover that, because that is a positive story.

I can understand why you like them. I do too. I was stoked when I found the one we have here and then I began doubting its age and lost interest. :)

I don't collect anything really. Maybe aboriginal axes and grinding stones. Which we find around the farms we have and our family has.

Dust books? No, no, why would I do that? ;)
I ignore dust on my books and only wipe the shelf in front every now and then with one of those clinging fibre type dusters.
But glass. Ugh. I hate cleaning glass.

Terri | 19576 comments haha. Yeah. I know I have have one of those info-mercial ad jingles in my head.

I also sometimes use the hand held vacuum (we call all the hand held ones dust busters irrespective of brand) with its bristle accessory.

The media here has been very careful not to speculate on the shooters (there are a least two, one dead). They're not saying anything until the whole thing is over. Last I checked (about half an hour ago, they were still hunting the other shooter that they are sure of), and interviewing witnesses to see if there are more.

message 10198: by Margaret, Sherlockian Sheila (new)

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments Our media, of course, is free to have a ball speculating.

Problem is, that's about all they do. It's too much like hard work for them actually to report facts.

I swear they take half their news bulletins from that bastion of intelligence and reliable reporting, FOX News. :p

message 10199: by Margaret, Sherlockian Sheila (new)

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments And as you may have noticed, I don't really like the news media.

message 10200: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (drokka) | 2675 comments FOX doesn't get much respect around these parts either.
I'm quite impressed that the media is just providing the news. I think there are a few reasons:
1- a soldier guarding an epitaph was the first victim, and the shooter wasn't described in any way, the focus was on hoping he'd make it (he didn't)

2- It was meant to be a Caucaus day in parliament, so the media was all over the place taking video as it happened, and so the media outlets are more concerned about the well-being of the parliamentarians, the media, the military, law and emergency forces.

3- They don't want to be the accomplices (unwitting) to any 'retaliation' to speculation. It happened in Toronto once and they've been good about not jumping the gun.

4- The first news broadcasts were done by veteran news casters. So no potential rookie errors to be had.
