Ah, the convince of pre-ordering

That is until it ships and you're lookin' at your bank statement wondering WTH that charge is for. But, then the joy quickly returns when you realize it's that book you pre-ordered months ago. LOL!

Literary Ames (amyorames) | 1854 comments You're a mind-reader, Steph. I was just looking at my finances for 2011 earlier. It seems I'm propping up Amazon with my bank account. After food it's my second biggest expense, and it increases every year.

I've just received Silver-Tongued Devil (Sabina Kane, #4) by Jaye Wells on my Kindle. Strangely, the paperback was available before the e-edition.

message 3: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments LOL! Same! $D

Cool! I'd forgotten about that one, gotta see where mine is ... maybe I ordered the eBook as well? Damn, I can never remember. LOL!

message 6: by Josie (new)

Josie | 1967 comments Great list, Sandra!!

I think I've only pre ordered Alien Diplomacy (Katherine "Kitty" Katt, #5) by Gini Koch and Fury's Kiss although it's always a nice surprise when a forgotten pre-order gets delivered. It's like a present!... that you've already paid for :/

message 10: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments LOL Josie! That it is! :D

So ... if we pre-ordered a book prior to 12/31, but it doesn't ship until on/after 1/1 guess that means it counts as a 2012 purchase, huh? :/

message 11: by Josie (last edited Jan 05, 2012 02:41PM) (new)

Josie | 1967 comments Well, I would actually say it wouldn't since the actual spending money was in 2011 which was why Sandra made that lovely (but deliciously tempting) thread making sure everyone had pre-ordered before the new year to help with the book balance challenge :)

message 12: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments That was my hope, Josie. I'm game to roll with that, if everyone's doin' the same. I saw her thread as the same, but wasn't sure since (view spoiler) >;)

message 13: by Josie (new)

Josie | 1967 comments Really?! Oh well, this was news to me. Is it news to me? Oh right, yeah. I think deep down I knew that. Veeerry veerrry deep down along with where I try really hard not to look at bank statements but let's keep pretending! :P

I say you're the boss Steph, you do what you want!

message 14: by Judithe, Soap Operas never end.... (new)

Judithe | 6566 comments Oh...I thought of that, too. So, I pre-paid (some of!) mine using gift certificates...lol...and some of those I bought for myself...just to ensure they would safely fall under the 2011 umbrella!

message 15: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments No, no, no, you're supposed to say, "All pre-orders made by 12/31 fall under 2011 purchases." LOL!

Everyone agreed? >;)

Josie | 1967 comments YES!

Come on, Judithe, note the winks... ;)

I agree with that! Especially if it's from Book Depository cause they take the money right away! :)

message 18: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

LMAO!

Don't know about you but my money goes when I place the order, not when the book ships.

That's both Book Depository & Better World Books, I only get the freebie ebooks from Amazon, cause they charge too much for postage to Aus on real books.

message 24: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments True. Same for me really at least with online shoppes except Amazon. Those pre-orders deduct the $ once the book ships. Just takes forever and day to get them. ;)

Amazon only take the money when it ships - not when you order, I have to write them down so I don't overspend. They don't charge us for postage anymore and I'm NOT complaining about that! :)

Charlotte (Buried in Books) | 557 comments I've actually been pretty restrained so far, the only pre-orders I've got are:

The Darkest Seduction (Lords of the Underworld, #9) by Gena Showalter Lover Reborn (Black Dagger Brotherhood, #10) by J.R. Ward Timeless (The Parasol Protectorate, #5) by Gail Carriger

Trying to cut back on my book buying this year - need to read what I've got and make more space ;)

Vivian (_vivian) | 1934 comments Haha, you guys crack me up. CHEATERS! I should've pre-ordered books too!

message 28: by Susan (new)

Susan | 23 comments I haven't pre-ordered anything yet myself but there are a few I am considering.

Sandra | 25908 comments Vivian wrote: "Haha, you guys crack me up. CHEATERS! I should've pre-ordered books too!"

Well, I always try to pre-order cause it's way cheaper for me :)

Michelle, lucky you, they must be competing with BD in UK, it's still $12.49 per book to ship from Amazon for me, whether new or used.

message 30: by Vivian (new)

Vivian (_vivian) | 1934 comments Holy moley, $12.49 to ship? That's crazy, does Amazon prime work internationally? That would be more than worth it.

message 31: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25908 comments Don't think so Vivian. That's why BD & BWB win, cause they have free postage.

message 32: by [deleted user] (new)

Sandra, it's like you have superpowers and a secret costume underneath your clothes. How the hell do you organise yourself enough to pre-order all those things? Do you have some sort of shareholder stake in BD?

Pre-orders were the bane of my life last year, man. I pre-ordered things, forgot I had pre-ordered them, then rushed to order them when they came out, and then had two copies of almost everything. Sucks to be a dumbass.

Lady Jaye (lady-jaye) | 598 comments LOL, Moss!

message 34: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (last edited Jan 07, 2012 01:55AM) (new)

Sandra | 25908 comments LOL. No Superpowers, just lists on paper and on BD, telling me when I ordered it.

The bain of my existence is spotting a bargain at the shops and coming home to find I already have it :(

Boy I wish I had shares in BD, I'd be rich!!!!!

message 35: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments LMAO Moss! I've done that before and ordered something twice. Thankfully, in my case, I tend to pre-order the DTB and buy the eBook the day of release. Works out for me b/c I can read it right away AND have the pretty, pretty book on my shelves. BUT .... hubby doesn't agree that this is a +. Wonder why come? >;)

That's a lot of money wasting on postage! Think of the extra books you can get from BD with that. I completely agree with your choice! They used to only give us free shipping if we spent £15, then it was £5 now it's always free. I prefer it cause I can pre-order books now for around £3.43 (like Sins of the Demon) and it's easier to hide 1 book at a time than 3, 4 or 5 :)
Thank god Hubby doesn't see my kindle orders. He's been congratulating me on my restraint lately. Although the postman asked him to buy me shares in Royal Mail for my Christmas as he spends more time delivering books to me than anyone else. I wasn't impressed! Told him to buy me shares in a bookshop insrtead ;)

LOL! I do that with my favourites, some are even doubled on my shelves as I have started collecting some signed books...

message 39: by Literary Ames (new)

Literary Ames (amyorames) | 1854 comments LOL!

You know, even if you bought shares in BD you'd be supporting Amazon since they own their ass now. They bought BD last year.

I noticed Book Depository have their own shop on AMazon Marketplace - makes sense now! :)

message 41: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25908 comments Yep, I knew that :)

Still, I favour BD, never had a problem that they couldn't fix and without any argument.

message 42: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments Yeah, I like to pretend BD is still on its own because, like Sandra, they tend to treat me better.

To top it off, I noticed recently that Amazon bought my beloved free eReader app, Stanza, by Lexcycle. They best not take away the fact that we can read any format book on that eReader. If they start making it Kindle-like and throw restrictions on its capabilities and ordering options, I'll have to write Bezos.

message 43: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25908 comments Bugger! I shake my fist at you Amazon! Why do they think they have to be Microsoft and buy up everything?

message 44: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments LOL!! Yeah, I guess so. When I did my comp essay on Amazon and B&N I was impressed with Bezos. But, things like this (buying up all the good apps and shoppes), while they make business sense, make me angry. Give the little guys a shot on their own -- as competition, will ya?!

Most of mine are unsigned and I have quite a few custom bookthongs and limited editions but I do love my signed one's. My kindlegraph collection is growing too, have you signed up for it yet?
