Where in the World Have You Been?!?! (Book Finished and Review Linked)
Finished The Poisonwood Bible for my Congo read last night. Loved it. A longer version of my response to it is on my blog: http://bethslistlove.wordpress.com/20...

My review, several posts above, about the Congo was Dancing in the Glory of Monsters: The Collapse of the Congo and the Great War of Africa/Jason Stearns, set in the still-troubled post-colonial time. From the comments, The Poisonwood Bible, set in the Belgian Congo, also sounds likes a satisfying read. My just-finished book goes further back in history to the Middles Ages in Albania when the religion had shifted from Roman Catholicism to the Orthodox Church and the country was often fought over by neighbors. In the mystery/detective story The Ghost Rider/Ismail Kadare, the reader, along with the protagonist, literally has to decide whether a man arose from his grave to fulfill a family pledge or whether a rational explanation is truer. my review

I'm enjoying so much at the moment.
Just exiting the smoking straits that surround the still volatile Krakatoa: The Day the World Exploded, grateful that part of me is immersed in Tibetan Buddhism. How's that for balance? Here's my review of Winchester's epic coverage of Krakatoa's destructive blast of 1883: http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/76...
With Paul Stoller, I have escaped from malevolent sorcery in Niger. Review: In Sorcery's Shadow: A Memoir of Apprenticeship among the Songhay of Niger.
Just had a quick one day stop in Senegal with So Long a Letter by Mariama Bâ. I enjoyed it and reviewed it on my blog: http://bethslistlove.wordpress.com/20...
I finished The Blood of Flowers, my Iran book, four days ago. It's been a bit crazy in the interim. My kitchen floor was removed and scraped for mold and dry rot due to recent water damage. I also had an inspection of my apartment. So you'll probably understand why I didn't have time to post my review. I just wrote it. Here's the link: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

The book stayed in my mind all these years. It as so tragic that she died young.
I just left Russia with Ian Frazier's Travels in Siberia. I didn't like it as much as I thought I would, but there were definitely parts that I really enjoyed. Review here.

:) Took me a minute but i got it Mikki!!
Judy I hope the leeches and malaria don't keep you down (I know they won't somehow). I have a feeling I'll read more about Congo in the future myself.
Just finished a trip to South Africa last night with A Beautiful Place to Die. My favorite so far in my Global Challenge list! I highly highly recommend it! A white police officer is found dead in a rural South African town in the 1950's...here is the link to my review: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...
Loved my recent visit to Mississippi in The Help. Here is a link to my review: www.coldread.wordpress.comNow I'm off to Beijing in
Kitchen Chinese: A Novel about Food, Family, and Finding Yourself and also fifteenth century Prague in The Mercy Seller.
I recently left Merry Olde England w/ Inheritance: The Story of Knole and the Sackvilles which began during the reign of the Tudors and continued to today. I bit heavy going at times. Now I can be found in Spain during the Spanish Inquisition in By Fire, By Water which is proving to be a much faster read.
CsardasJust finished this historical novel about Hungary from 1914 through 1947. Very, very good.

The Weirdstone of Brisingamen: A Tale of Alderley was the book that got me into fantasy ... and now I've found that he's written many more ... very excited!!

Louise wrote: "I just spent a great time in India with The Enchantress Of Florence: A Novel"ooh, good. I just got a copy and it is on my shelf for later. I am listening to Shalimar the Clown on audio now.
WOW. Just left Hungary (not sure where I'm going next since my NZ book finally came on interlibrary loan, but that will really mess up my map). Here is a link to my review of Fatelessness. http://bethslistlove.wordpress.com/20... It was amazing. I'm stingy with 5 star ratings, but this got one.
I have left Spain (and those dreadful Inquisitors) behind in By Fire, By Water, and am now in Riyahd reading Girls of Riyadh which looks like it is going to be a fun and fast read.

Truly Madly Deeply is one of my favorite all time movies. Love it. I happened upon Blow Dry one day and didn't even know what I was watching. It was fun. I want to see the one about wine, set in the 70s I think, is it Bottle Shock or something like that?
Made a quick Ukraine stop with The Nose by Nikolai Gogol. It was incredibly short and just a light, fun read. Now again a little unsure whether to mess up my map or go to someplace geographically logical. I'm reading Nicholas Nickleby for another group, so I might substitute it for my England read and just insert it when I finish, which could be awhile, since it is over 800 pages. My official Nose review is at http://bethslistlove.wordpress.com/20... .
I've finished my Twilight of the Idols sojourn in Germany and played some piano with The Piano Teacher in Vienna. I'm now off to Lublin in Poland and then passing on through the Ukraine with another The Nose story. Thinking about dreaming of the Vikings in Iceland as it will be a while before I finish that one. Onwards!!
I was stuck in the jungle for a while with The Storyteller by Mario Vargas Llosa (review here, but finally finished it as well as making a delicious dessert from Peru - Arroz Zambito. Then I zipped through Egypt with a brief stay in The Yacoubian Building (my review here, which I'd recommend far more than The Storyteller.
I've had a long and wonderful stay in Russia with Anna Karenina and feel that I've learned quite a bit about Russian culture. My review is here.
Just left Portugal and The Crime of Father Amaro. No review because too busy + migraine, but it was a fun book.
I'm leaving Riyadh and Girls of Riyadh which was a fast and enjoyable read and am heading to Israel w/ Jeremy Ben-Ami's A New Voice for Israel: Fighting for the Survival of the Jewish Nation. Guessing this one will be a bit heavier going than the book I just finished.
Oh, and when driving back and forth to work, I am visiting Berlin via audio with In the Garden of Beasts: Love, Terror, and an American Family in Hitler's Berlin. I'm on disc 3 out of 11 and thus far, I am not really enjoying Berlin all that much.
HERE is my review for Memories of My Melancholy Whores by Gabriel García Márquez which I used for my Colombian stop around the world. And
HERE is my review for It Rains in February: A Wife's Memoir of Love and Loss by Leila Summers for my second stop in South Africa on my journey.
