When I'm done with a book, I get rid of it. I just don't have the room to store all the books I've read. If I know someone who will like it, I give it to them. Otherwise, I use this great trade site:

http://www.paperbackswap.com/index.php
Paperback Swap is great because when you send out a book that has been requested from you, you pay the shipping (anywhere from $2-$4 depending on the weight of the book), and then when you request a book from someone else, it's free for you! They also have quality guarantees.

This is a great way to get new books off of your TBR list, and the site is easy to use!

Alana ~ The Book Pimp (loonyalana) | 374 comments I love my books... I keep as many as I can... but we have a lack of space, so my husband made me box up most of my books and put them in the attic. But earlier this year I got a Kindle - so he can't box those up and take them away from me! I've been downloading free books like they are going out of style... I think I'm up around the 400+ mark... I'll probably run out of space and have to archive some soon....

Alana ~ The Book Pimp (loonyalana) | 374 comments A wish of mine is to someday have a library- like a room big enough and dedicated to shelves and books and reading...

A girl can dream, right?

message 4: by [deleted user] (new)

I like to keep my favourite books, and then sell or donate the ones that I can part with.

message 5: by [deleted user] (new)

i love books, and i can reread my favorite books over n over again, n never get tired! so i like to keep them ^-^ But, like Alana said, lacking of space is the trouble. soo now i download e-books! (=

message 6: by NayNay (new)

NayNay I keep my favorite books that I know I would enjoy reading over and over again. The ones I do not keep I donate to my area Hospital and local Jail. I have a kindle and now it is no problem, and Alana no need to archive yet I have just under 1934 books and still have lots of room.

message 7: by Anastasia (new)

Anastasia | 548 comments i keep all of my books and i too wish to one day have a little library in my house where people can go and get a book from the hundreds on the shelves around them. I've already got over a hundred books, it may take up a lot of space but to me it's worth it. :^D

message 8: by Jojobean (new)

Jojobean I keep them all and if i read a book from the library that i like i buy it

message 9: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (ashleywilliams75) I give them away or trade them on PBS. I just gave 2 large books I pulled from my PBS shelf and gave away since they had been there some time.

I just saw this post and I think its awesome!

I usually save the books that I love which are most of them. The books that I read and am not a fan of I try to give them away some kind of way. I will have to try out those bookswapping sites so I can get rid of some books I dont know what to do with.

message 11: by Lynxie (new)

Lynxie | 13 comments I keep most books, but end up having to go through and find new loving homes for some of them occasionally.

Ebooks are a different matter... I love that Amazon houses them for me in the off chance I might want them again :D

message 12: by [deleted user] (new)

I don't have a E-reader of any type and I normally buy all the books I read. I keep all of my books, but I have two or three friends that borrow my books all the time. I only have one book case at the moment an all the books are double rowed and then I have stacks randomly throughout my bedroom, where ever there is an open space where my two toddlers can't get a hold of them.

I have a real addiction to buying books. Even if I don't like the book, if it is part of a series, I will buy the rest of them and read them so I can have a complete set. I always use the excuse that one day my 2 year old son and 3 year old daughter might want to read them. -lol-

message 13: by Tammy (new)

Tammy | 291 comments Well...the books that I can bear to part with are posted to Paperback Swap, some are taken to my local used book store to trade in, and others are donated to the library.
My friend and I try to periodically mail books to each other since we live in different states now and cannot read together :-(

message 14: by Emi えみ (new)

Emi えみ Takami 鷹見 (emitakami) I get rid of some at yardsales or the local book shop when I'm in need of a little extra cash. I donate them to the library either for their book sales or for use. I have a bagful I want to take to Half-Price Books, but haven't made it down there yet. Sometimes, I give them to my friends/family/

Usually, I keep them. I'm a bookhoarder, and I just can't help it. The one's I've read and can't bear to part with end up on a certain shelf, which is in the attic due to lack of room. A few are in my room (the Harry Potter Shrine, my manga, Hunger Games).

message 15: by Sannie (last edited Feb 13, 2012 04:08AM) (new)

Sannie Hald (sanniehald) | 282 comments I try to keep every single book I have. However, books I dislike like 2 stars or under I give away.. Others I keep. I have a whole box at my mother's house in Denmark, and my shelf in my flat is filled.. It helps that I have my kindle, but I cannot decide which I like better.. But I have around 300 books, 200 unread on it. I reckon I have too many to be honest.

Good books are my dearest friends, it is difficult to get rid of them

message 16: by Michael (new)

Michael Cargill (michaelcargill) I get rid of them. Whilst it is quite nice to have a collection of some kind ultimately it just takes up too much space.

I give them away to charity shops or friends. Now that I have a Kindle I don't even bother with normal books at all.

I am not really much of a collector to be honest. Over the years I have thrown out vinyls, cassettes, VHS tapes, DVDs and computer games.

message 17: by [deleted user] (new)

I just got a kindle for my birthday and have been doing a Massive cleanout of my physical copies. I have found homes for 50+ already but have tons to go. I would love to have a swap thread if anyone is interested??

message 18: by Jeanette (new)

Jeanette Hornby (goodreadscomuser_jeanettehornby) | 65 comments I keep my favourites, swap the others at the library or give away.
I have a kindle now too so that's great for storage space.

A swap thread it a great idea! Let us work out a few basic ground rules, and we'll make a thread. Any suggestions for it?

message 22: by Haikufall (new)

Haikufall | 14 comments The books I really like I still by in paper back, but books I'm not to sure about ill get as ebooks so they want take up space. Books I love and want to share go straight to my fav library.

message 23: by Haikufall (new)

Haikufall | 14 comments Back to what I was saying I have an ereader as well, nook color and love it, but the authors I really like still get there paper back books, just love the feel of a real book.

message 24: by [deleted user] (new)

Sheri- I would say listing title, condition, and where you are willing to ship to (us only or international for example) for starters :)

message 25: by Lanie (new)

Lanie Malone | 59 comments I trade mine in at the Book Rack near my house.

message 27: by Mia (new)

Mia (hotwolfie) | 24 comments I pass them out to friends if I think they'll like them, or I donate them to my library. I keep my favorites and the books I thought were so-so.

message 28: by Holly (last edited Feb 20, 2012 04:45PM) (new)

Holly If I have old books I don't really like anymore, I'll donate them to the library or something, but I keep all the books I love!! (A.K.A.: HUNGER GAMES!!) But I really would not get a kindle because I like having the book right in my hand.

message 29: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne Pringle | 120 comments I get all my books from the library. Then the ones I really love I buy. If I do buy books that I am unsure of it's usually second hand. This why I feel no guilt when I get rid of my books - which I usually give away to second hand stores.

message 30: by Shay (new)

Shay (icylilies) | 49 comments I want to keep my books until they start to fall apart and even then, I still try to hold on to them and put the tape to good use lol.

message 31: by Dee (new)

Dee | 26 comments I keep all of my books, even the ones that I didn't like very much. Because when I look at them or flip through the pages, I can't help but remember all of the stories, and characters that lie in them. I've read more than I own, but eventually I want to buy those ones also. I have two good sized bookshelfs, and a whole closet, so for now anyway I have plenty of room.

message 32: by Gabriela (new)

Gabriela I keep the books that have sentimental value or that I really enjoyed, the rest I take to Half Price Books and trade them in for some money. Granted it is not much but at least I know that someone else gets to enjoy them.

message 33: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (allyria) I keep all of my books. I can't bear to part with them. I still have all my books from childhood as well.

message 34: by Elle (new)

Elle (louiselesley) I only own about 20 DTB's and most of them are either very old favourites (like HP) or reference books.

I literally sold or donated every book I owned when I got my Kindle!

message 35: by [deleted user] (new)

Me? Well, I buy a lot and then fill up the bookshelves. And then when they're all full, I ask my dad for new bookshelves. :> teehee.

message 36: by Beatrice (new)

Beatrice (beatricemasalunga) I still keep my books. My shelf is overflowing, need a new bookshelf though.

message 37: by Bridgette (new)

Bridgette | 3 comments i sell most of my books but with some i trade them in for other books at my local market. :)

message 38: by Julie (new)

Julie Reece I keep my favorites, ones I rate five stars and a few four stars. The rest I take to a used book store where I get credit for trading them in and get the new books on my list :)

message 39: by Deeann (new)

Deeann (forevereader61) | 50 comments Well...I keep my favorite books and my autographed books and then some! My books are overflowing everywhere .... I really want a library with books all around me and a fireplace with a wonderful overstuffed chair to sit in while I read everything I can get my hands on!

Amy (DemonKittie) (demonkittie) | 502 comments I keep the ones I love and am slowly collecting from thrift stores and sales the books I don't have. My goal is to someday have a library that has A wall of DVDs and the rest be books and plenty of places to sit and read.

Some day...

message 41: by Barry (new)

Barry James (mondragoran) | 9 comments My wife has asthma so we can't let them sit around and collect dust. I've switched mostly to Kindle, and she trades hers in at Bookman's for credit every couple of months. We keep the best of the best in the bookshelf in the guest room to impress our guests with our reading list lol. :)

message 42: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine Beaumont (lorraine_beaumont) When we renovated our home -I made a library so I could put all my books out on display. I keep all the hardbacks which I have TONS and I hand my paperbacks off to my family and friends.

message 43: by MeMe Belikova (new)

MeMe Belikova First lady Ivashkov (alicebelikovreads) | 949 comments I keep them all! I am stingy when it comes to my books they are like my second child I will protect them with everything I have. The books I hate or have extra copies of, I usually giveaway on my blog or via twitter it's fun and I love it! I would like to have a library too someday and I'm stacking my bookshelves and closet for when it happens!

message 44: by Merry (new)

Merry (debsaux) | 6 comments They usually fall apart because I read them a lot, sleep next to them, eat while reading.

Tammy ~Witching Hour Reads~ (03tammy-lynn) | 1434 comments I keep most of my books, but the ones I know I will never read again, I donate them to my local library.

message 46: by [deleted user] (new)

I hoard my books. Seriously, it's a problem. I've just started using Kindle though, so I might be moving away from that. I like the idea of paperbackswap though, so I might use that!

message 47: by Julissa (new)

Julissa (ta2kitty) | 35 comments Although I like the convenience of a Kindle I still prefer the feel of a real book.

I only keep my favorites and donate or swap the rest (I even started a book swap at work for our patients.) Despite the donations, I still have a few thousand books.

I am fortunate that my fiance has set up a room for me dedicated entirely to my books so I do have a home library.

I'm interested in the book swap also :-)

message 48: by Jessica (new)

Jessica Payne | 7 comments I can't afford my reading habit. I get almost all my books from the library!!! Sometimes its a long wait (like I've been waiting a few months for Divergent, but I found some others to keep me busy while I wait), but I read at least a book a week, so its worth it. My favorites I buy and re-read (Hunger Games, Twilight, Harry Potter, etc.).

message 49: by Storm (new)

Storm (poefinn) | 39 comments i usaully keep my books, i have got rid of some books ever so often, but only ones i have grown out of, or i neevr liked in the first place, i could never get rid of my books now, even though i have over 400+ books, and have basicaly run out of space, i would rather have a sea of books for a room then get rid of them XD

i have a kindle, so i should probally start buying my books on there, but having a book on the kindle just dosen't comapre to owning the real thing, it dosent have the smell, or weight.

message 50: by Duks (new)
