Monkey Grip by Helen Garner

message 64: by Danielle (new)

Danielle | 33 comments It is a good review Mish but unlike you I beg people to read this book. I loved it, even though it is very confronting sometimes. Eva Hornung did an absolutely brilliant job of taking the reader inside the life of a dog pack. In this book the animals are more humane than the humans.
The only Australian book I have read this year is Mezza Italiana: An Enchanting Story about Love Family la Dolce Vita and Finding Your Place in the World
It was enjoyable but not outstanding.

Thanks Danielle and yes you’re right in saying that the animals are more humane than the human. I come to realise that more so when Romachka ventured out into the city. I was disgusted and angry at the humans by the way treated Romachka.

Glad you like the Tomorrow series Mish:) I loved it when I read it a few years ago.

I finished The Mistake by Wendy James while on the train. I really enjoyed it, and will do a review when we get home!

I am currently reading Empty Chairs: Much more than a story about child abuse by Stacey Danson and it's rivetting! I'm loving it!

Mish | 3600 comments I've finished Burn Bright a while ago but just reviewed it now. Mixed feeling about it being YA (reference to these pods troubled me) but really enjoyed the plot and where it was going...I will read the next book. hopefully sometime soon.

I have just finished By The Sword by Alison Stuart which I thoroughly enjoyed. My review http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

message 77: by Kim Marie (new)

Kim Marie | 894 comments I've now read three novels by Geraldine Brooks and I know there are others here at Aussie Readers who enjoy historical fiction. Although the Caleb in Caleb's Crossing did exist (and his story is amazing) he is not the main character. That honour goes to a strong minded young woman called Bethia whose intellect struggles to find a place within her Puritan community. As always, Brooks has done some extensive research and the language used is in keeping with the era, which certainly adds to it's appeal. I would say this is a book for those who enjoy character/setting as opposed to unrelenting action.

I have finished Murder At The Rocks by Jill Paterson which I thoroughly enjoyed. Review here http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

I actually found this book by accident...I was searching for another book by ISBN, and put in the incorrect number, coming up with Jill's book instead! I'm thrilled I made that mistake;D

Is there a straightforward no photos list of the authors in this group and the books they've written? I'd find that really handy for reading purposes. Any hints folks?

Faye (lastchapter) | 409 comments Hi just came accross your discussion and realised how many aussie books I have read so far this year they include: Silent Fear - Katherine Howell
There should be more dancing - Rosalie Ham
The Lightkeepers Wife - Karen Viggers
Bear is now asleep - William Verity
White Tiger & Red Phoenix - Kylie Chan

I have enjoyed every one of these books, all different.

Faye, I haven't read There Should Be More Dancing yet but I'm scheduled to read Summer At Mount Hope this month for my AA Challenge for May - Have you read it yet?

message 99: by Faye (new)

Faye (lastchapter) | 409 comments Yes, I read that a little while ago, I enjoyed it, the other book of Rosalie Ham "The Dressmaker" I really loved. "There Should Be More Dancing" I loved, I actually went to see Rosalie Ham at the local library she tells me she didn't write There should be More Dancing to be funny. But I could see some humour in it and thought it was fabulous. Happy Reading! Faye

Monkey Grip is an old book, wow, I still remember reading that from about 20 years ago. In the last couple of years I read Helen Garner's - The Spare Room, great book, sad as sad. Beautiful also.Faye
