happy (happyone) | 2782 comments Since our local symphony is performing all of Brahm's symphonies this year, I decided to read a biography of the man

Johannes Brahms A Biography by Jan Swafford

Terri | 19576 comments I've gotten back to World on Fire (Spoils of Olympus #2) by Christian Kachel .
As I haven't been reading, this had sat on my bedside table for 6 months with only a chapter read.

I've gone back to page one and started it again.
Really like Christian's writing. Liked it in book one. Liking it in book two.

happy (happyone) | 2782 comments I finished the bio of Brahms I was reading

Johannes Brahms A Biography by Jan Swafford

Good read - he was a complicated man to say the least - brutally honest when assessing someone's musical talent, had very little tact. Some technical stuff, but not too bad - 4.25 stars

Starting #6 in Tana French's Dublin Murder Squad series

The Trespasser (Dublin Murder Squad #6) by Tana French

I think Ms. French could make the phonebook interesting reading!

Terri | 19576 comments World on Fire is nearly finished, but I'm putting it aside for a couple hours because Simply Nigella: Feel Good Food Simply Nigella Feel Good Food by Nigella Lawson arrived in the mail! Yay.

Allison | 1704 comments I need to start that series, Happy!

message 7957: by Renata (new)

Renata (rderis) | 236 comments Just started Robert Low's The Whale Road (Oathsworn, #1) by Robert Low . I recently finished his series on Robert the Bruce, which was excellent. Given my love of all things Viking and the great reviews of this series from this group, I expect to skip eating, sleeping, etc. for a bit...

Allison | 1704 comments Ugh! I swear I've been plagued by more reading slumps in the last two years than I've had in my whole life!!

Got halfway thru The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller before placing it aside and starting The Cater Street Hangman (Charlotte & Thomas Pitt, #1) by Anne Perry but that's not grabbing my attention either :/

message 7966: by May (new)

May (mayzie) | 968 comments I am feeling much the same... Just picked up Martin Walker's "RESISTANCE MAN". Chief Bruno is always a good read!!

A lot depends on the mood you're in when you pick it up.
First time I picked up Song of Achilles I was not impressed, but time went by, I picked it up again and really enjoyed it.

I felt like the voice of the point of view character, Patroclus, sounded like a woman's voice. I couldn't get over that and stopped reading it.

Terri | 19576 comments That's interesting, Eileen. I have not read it, but know exactly what you mean. I have that problem with some male characters written by women. It isn't every book, just every now and then.

With some male authors writing women characters, I find they can struggle. The women don't sound like men, they sound stupid and fragile minded. Men don't always get their women characters right.

message 7970: by May (new)

May (mayzie) | 968 comments Chris Bohjalian does women better than most male authors. I did not realize that the author of "MIDWIVES" was a man until I have finished it & read asomeone else's review!!

I liked it ok.... I'm just not into reading anything right now, I guess. And I really want to be reading!!

message 7972: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments I feel you, Allie. I am back to being hungry for reading afyer approximately 2 years of having no interest in reading what so ever. I started thinking I would never want to read again.
Then about 4 weeks ago..whammo!..my love for reading came back.

I hope this happens to you soon.

happy (happyone) | 2782 comments Terri

While I liked Imerial Fire, but I didn't think it was as good as his first one

Enjoy!

I finished The Trespasser

Not HF, but a good police procedural/mystery. Set in Modern Dublin, this is the sixth of the series. A pretty good twist at the end. Solid 4 stars.

Currently reading David Poyer's latest Dan Lenson military thriller

Tipping Point The War with China - The First Salvo (Dan Lenson Novels) by David Poyer

Terri | 19576 comments I have been putting off Imperial Fire because I didn't like the first book. I loved the beginning of the first book and then I thought it went bad.
I can't keep putting it off though. Going to have to read
Imperial Fire sooner or later.

Allison | 1704 comments It seems that my tablet is no longer able to "accept" the kindle app on it. Whatttt.

So all those books I've bought thru the years and the ones I was reading within the last few days now have to wait until I either buy a new tablet that's compatible with kindle's app or I need a friggin kindle.

message 7982: by Tamara (new)

Tamara Agha-Jaffar The library contacted me to say my books are ready for pick up. I picked up The Whale Road by Robert Low and Hatchepsut: The Female Pharaoh by Joyce A. Tyldesley.

The Whale Road (Oathsworn, #1) by Robert Low is because I read some glowing recommendations on one of your threads and Hatchepsut The Female Pharaoh by Joyce A. Tyldesley based on Margaret's recommendation.

I'd never heard of either before and am excited to read both. So thank you, thank you, thank you.

Gretchen (eab2012) For all of April and part of May, I am supervising state mandated testing at the school I work at (don't even get me started on testing). I didn't want to start anything new while I was working. Apparently I still have to pay attention to students. So I'm taking the opportunity to re-read the Percy Jackson books.
Right now I'm on The Battle of the Labyrinth (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #4) by Rick Riordan

The students love that I'm reading these books. We might start after school book club.

message 7993: by Alice (new)

Alice Poon (alice_poon) I'm getting to the last part of Personal Recollections of Joan Of Arc, which is about Joan's Great Trial. People say that Mark Twain's writing of this novel is a departure from his usual comedic style, but I find that his sense of humor is not at all lacking.

Alice Poon (alice_poon) I finished Personal Recollections of Joan Of Arc and have posted my review in the Hundred Years' War thread.

I am reading Embers by Sándor Márai, set in the early 1900s in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Charming writing.
