Dawn (caveatlector) I wasn't a big fan of that book and didn't bother with the rest of the series. I kind of thought that maybe the translation let me down as I couldn't see how this inspired Game of Thrones.

message 7852: by Gretchen (new)

Gretchen (eab2012) I am going to move on to the second book. I find the time period interesting enough. The first book seems to be nothing more than an introduction to the main characters which is kind of disappointing.

message 7853: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) Maybe the rest of the series will be better then, when it gets down into more of the nitty gritty of the history.

message 7854: by Gretchen (new)

Gretchen (eab2012) That's kind of what I am hoping. It is a series that comes so highly recommended by people who have similar tastes.

Allison | 1704 comments Finished with The Plantagenet Prelude by Jean Plaidy. Sooooo disappointed. But I have a whole series by her so I'll have to carry on :/

Alice Poon (alice_poon) I'm reading The Dream Lover: A Novel of George Sand by Elizabeth Berg - am loving it!

I have The Iron King on my to-read list.

Remember Jean Plaidy is an older author, so her books aren't going to be in the same league with the more modern writers like Hillary Mantel or Philippa Gregory. I find if I re-read her books I need to actively keep in mind that a lot of her books were written in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s.

Haha, no problem with that here. Absolutely hated Hillary Mantel's absurd writing and not a hug fan of PG. I dunno... best way to describe it....not a lot of dialogue. Read like nonfiction... but not very interesting nonfiction :/

message 7859: by Deb (new)

Deb Omnivorous Reader I tried so many times to like Jean Plaidy back in the day, while I loved her subject matter I could never really bond with the writing style.

I preferred Margaret Campbell Barnes, but there was so much more Jean Plaidy stuff available. MCB has stood the test of time pretty well. Her novel, "The King's Fool" about Henry VIII's jester Will Somers is still a favourite re-read of mine.

She's still in print, though you may have to source from over seas.

happy (happyone) | 2782 comments I've seen her books in our local Barnes and Noble recently

Never read her though

I finished The Trojan Icon - not bad, but not the best of the series by any means

currently reading the latest in Susanna Gregory's Thomas Chaloner series - set in 1665 London

The Chelsea Strangler by Susanna Gregory

and on my nook - a Roman mystery, David Wishart's
Ovid (Marcus Corvinus, #1) by David Wishart

This series is a favorite of mine too! Did you try his standalones? I recommend them too: The Horse Coin and I, Virgil

happy (happyone) | 2782 comments Ovid is the first Wishart I've tried. Horse and Virgil are on the TBR. Now I've just got to make time to read them :)

You just have to get used to some of the terminology. But the novels are really good!

message 7882: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) I have just finished the latest Uhtred book, The Flame Bearer. Much to Andy's disappointment I've only rated it a 3. :)

Marilyn (mbk1857) | 415 comments I was disappointed in the Flamebearer, too. Glad to hear I wasn't the only one. Before, I was blitzkrieging my way thru the pages from one book to another. This last one was really a slog.

happy (happyone) | 2782 comments I finished The Chelsea Strangler.

Not a bad little mystery - this is set in the London suburb of Chelsea during the plague epidemic of 1665. Chaloner has to figure out who is strangling the people living there. 4 stars

starting a NF look at Nisei soldiers of the 442nd RCT in WW II

Honor Before Glory The Epic World War II Story of the Japanese American GIs Who Rescued the Lost Battalion by Scott McGaugh

message 7890: by Alice (new)

Alice Poon (alice_poon) Some friends from another group recommended Joan of Arc by Mark Twain to me. The author is supposed to have said this was his best piece of work.

message 7891: by happy (last edited Feb 08, 2017 03:03PM) (new)

happy (happyone) | 2782 comments I finished David Wishart's Roman Mystery (set in the reign of Tiberius) Ovid.

Nice little mystery with a good conspiracy thrown in. The basic plot is Ovid step daughter wants the "hero", Marcus Covinus, help in getting approval to return Ovid's ashes to Rome for burial. Permission is refused at the highest levels and the Hero can't let it alone. (view spoiler)

Solid 4 stars, I'll definitely read the next one.

Currently reading a NF look at the year 1666 in England - including the Great Fire of London

1666 Plague, War, and Hellfire by Rebecca Rideal

message 7892: by Alice (new)

Alice Poon (alice_poon) Finished The Dream Lover: A Novel of George Sand - a compelling fictional biography of a remarkable 19th century French woman writer - 4 full stars.

Sure thing! Title must be a nod to Wallace Breem's Eagle In The Snow: A Novel of General Maximus and Rome's Last Stand except that one was fiction and this nonfiction.

happy (happyone) | 2782 comments I started #13 of Edward Marston's Railroad Detective

Signal for Vengeance by Edward Marston

This mystery series is set in mid 19th Century England

Also I started #2 of Michael Jecks's Vintener trilogy on my nook

Blood on the Sand (The Vintener Trilogy #2) by Michael Jecks

This is set in the 100 yrs war - specifically the siege of Calais after Crecy

message 7897: by Allison (new)

Allison | 1704 comments Ooh, adding that Michael Jecks trilogy. Thanks, Happy!

message 7898: by Marilyn (new)

Marilyn (mbk1857) | 415 comments Just finished The Plantagenets: The Warrior Kings and Queens Who Made England by Dan Jones. Jones ends his review with the downfall of RICHARD II. Though Henry IV was a Plantagenet, Jones considers him from the House of Lancaster. As an Anglophile, I didn't think there was anymore to learn but Jones had tidbits I didn't know which goes to show you're never too old to learn.

message 7899: by happy (last edited Feb 14, 2017 02:45PM) (new)

happy (happyone) | 2782 comments Allie - just so you know, the trilogy is not a mystery series - they're straight HF. I really like the first one in the series -Fields of Glory. It's ends with Crecy.

Marilyn - I had the same problem with The Plantagenets: The Warrior Kings and Queens Who Made England

I thought it was a good read never-the-less :)

message 7900: by Allison (new)

Allison | 1704 comments Thanks Happy but I had already looked them up :)

Hmmmmm is all I have to say about that, Marilyn and Happy. Hmmm indeed.
