What are you currently reading and why? (CLOSED)
I pay attention to books recommended by Indie Bound.I was mesmerized by Russian Winter by Daphne Kalotay.
Russian Winter
Really study the cover before you read.
I am reading Secret Daughter and am enjoying it immensely. Much more than I thought I would. It is simply told and a quick read and so far bittersweet is the word I would use to describe it.
I need a change of pace from an number of NF books in a row. Every Man Dies Alone seems to be everywhere and well liked (plus I like war stories) so it is next to be read.
John, I definitely plan on reading Every Lan Dies Alone soon too. I would love to hear what you think of it as you read it. When you return to NF, I highly recommend No Ordinary Time: Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt: The Home Front in World War II, which I am currently reading. Fascinating. Not a bit dry! Before I have only read books about Teddy. I had to even things out. I remeber hearing of a book just about Eleanor. Anybody have clues about what that could be called?
Zipped through The Moses Expedition and really enjoyed this page turning thriller. This weekend I am trying to finish The Gentle Axe by R. N. Morris for my in person group this coming week.
I'm currently reading All the Numbers, which was given a high rating by a Goodreads friend who often matches my own taste in books.
I am currently reading The Lovers of Algeria: A Novel. I just finished No Ordinary Time: Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt: The Home Front in World War II. The latter is a biography, but do NOT think it id dry and boring. It was marvelous. Here follows a link to my review for those interested: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...And why have I read these books? Well because I love learning history either via fiction or non-fiction that is not dry!
I've just started reading John le Carre's Our Kind Of Traitor and also for a different pace Blacklands. I started reviewing books in August (still learning!!) and I've always wanted to read a Le Carre novel. Blacklands was suggested to me by a publicist from Transworld.
Currently reading The Master of the World, Jules Verne's final novel, because I'm making my way thru the early years of the 20th century, and I'm now up to 1904
Bozo Sapiens: Why to Err is Human because I won it on goodreads. I've been reading a lot of stuff that purports to give ideas of what goes on 'behind the scenes' in our minds and I keep hoping for information that seems smart and credible. So far not much luck.
Cheryl, maybe you would be interested in the author Oliver Sacks, perhaps his book The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat. I plan on reading Uncle Tungsten, but that is a biography. He is a neurologist. Maybe this is not at all what yo uare looking for.....
Having finishe The Lovers of Algeria: A Novel, I have started Claude & Camille: A Novel of Monet. Here follows my review of the former.http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...
I am reading Claude and Camille because I lovet Monet's paintings!
Thank you Chrissie, I believe I read one by Sacks and yes they'd be a nice change of pace now. The anecdotes & illustrations in all these pop psychology books I've been reading are interesting, but too many authors have been trying to corral them into a coherent claim and it just doesn't work.
Ok.. I know this has nothin to do with what you guys are talking about but has anyone heard of "living dead girl"? my cousin said i should read it.
I am reading The Short Second Life of Bree Tunner by Stephenie Meyer. My bff gave it to me yesterday and I thought I'd finish it since it is so short!I'm liking it so far. Nothing exceptional, but it's ok.
I am reading The Painted Kiss b/c I just finished Claude & Camille: A Novel of Monet and wanted to read another about art that I love.
VampireLove1 wrote: "Ok.. None look interesting to me, sorry. You'll have to ask your cousin for the name of the author and then you can look it up here and read all the reviews. :)
I just finished The Painted Kiss and absolutely adored it. Here is a link to my review:http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...
Now I am reading
Every Man Dies Alone b/c it sounds intriguing and I liked the prose in the teeny bit I checked.
I love looking through this list ..... Im reading[The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Steig Larsson ... but don't really see what all the hype is about yet. I'm half way through - maybe it's just not my "cup of tea".
Soul of a Lion is a beautiful book about an animal refuge in Africa. Wonderful photos! My review here http://bit.ly/arj45X
Brenda said ~ I love looking through this list ..... Im reading[The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Steig Larsson ... but....I didn't get the hype at all. I thought it was pretty rubbish actually :S
Finished The Gentle Axe which was very good and an interestng premise and Death of a Cozy Writer which was a humourous send up of Agatha Christie and the English country house murder mystery.
I gave up on Until I Find You I jsut couldn't get into it, which was sad as I have liked other books by John Irving. I gave it over 200 pages...Now I am starting The Invisible Mountain because my mom loaned it to me and it was on my bedside table!
Shanon, you WILL love The Invisible Mountain! I gave it four stars and I only save 5 stars for the utterly, totally amazing books. You will probably like some sections more than others. Everyone seems to do this.....
Jenny wrote: "Brenda said ~ I love looking through this list ..... Im reading[The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Steig Larsson ... but....I didn't get the hype at all. I thought it was pretty rubbish actually :S" I tried GWTDT twice and finally gave it to the library for resale. glad I'm not alone.
After reading an interesting book about Germany during the Nazi era I need a change of pace so I picked up A Good Man in Africa.
Mary Poppins because I've heard the Julie Andrews version is so different I wanted to read the original. My library copy also has Mary Poppins Comes Back and I think I will finish that, too, while I'm at it.
Cheryl, P.L. Travers wrote 8 Mary Poppins books in all, so that will keep you in reading material for awhile...
Well, I dunno if I'll go that far. I just figured, since I had this omnibus in hand, I'd read it all. So, I guess I'd better get off and go do that. :)
Here follows the link to my review of Every Man Dies Alonehttp://www.goodreads.com/review/show/....
I very rarely abandon a book in the middle. I just could not take this any more..... I HAD to warn others!
I am now starting A Morbid Taste for Bones. I usually do not like crime/mysteries but this is so highly praised. I have to give it a chance. Maybe it will open up a new genre for me - historical crime.
Jo wrote: "I'm reading The Stand the uncut edition."If you like it read THE PASSAGE; just as long and just as good.
I am reading Reigning Cats and Dogs byTanith Lee as it was collecting dust and I wanted to find out whether it was something I should not have neglected.
If you want a little cozy mystery then try A Morbid Taste for Bones. Maybe you have already read it..... Everybody praises this author so I had to give it a try, and I am happy I did. So now I am reading Little Boy Lost b/c I wanted to try a Persephone book and this book will be discussed here next month. :0)
Finally finished The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo. Now I'm going to read The Help which I hope will be better. I've heard good things about it.
Just finishedA Good Man in Africa: A Novel, madcap mayhem involving a British diplomat. Lots of sex, politics, blackmail, a dead body and our hero in a Santa suit. Loads of fun!
Enjoyed Live Free or Die which I won on a Goodreads giveaway and now I am reading Devil in a Blue Dress: Featuring an Original Easy Rawlins Short Story by Walter Mosley.
I am reading STOLEN because I love mysteries, especially those set in England. This is the first in a series set in Blackpool. Actually, this one is a bit disappointing. The characters are flat and the mystery is "oh well" but it very short so I'll probably finish it.
I'm new to the group so will catch up with the monthly read when it arrives. But I'm currently reading The Art of Travel by Alain de Botton.
I was pulled to this book through 1 the cover looks pretty cool, and also it is in essay style about travel. I love anything to do about travelling and try to travel as much as I can myself.
Going back to my first point of the pretty cover. I know you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover, but I have really found some of the best finds when I have and I totally reccommend doing so. You never know what your going to get.
Lou, others who love travel, if you can make time for a quiet & cozy group, I'd love to have you join me at http://www.goodreads.com/group/show/3....
