He and another guy were big into the military strategy board games when Clancy wrote Red Storm Rising. I almost want to say his gamer buddy also started writing but didn't have the success as TC.

Very interesting. My friend has quite a collection of Tom Clancy books. She told me that 'Without Remorse' was the first book he wrote. I'm thinking it wasn't. Was Red Storm Rising the first book Tom Clancy wrote? I'm wondering because I need another hand held book to read for when I'm tired of or can't get on the computer.

Ken Consaul | 180 comments I think Hunt for Red October was the first followed by Red Storm. It could be he/they developed a game from the book or the book inspired the game. For me, Red Storm is still his best followed by Cardinal of the Kremlin.

From reading the Wiki entry it appears Clancy mostly licenses his name and has paid writers that churn out the books. Take a look, kind of interesting.
Keep in mind most of the information is on a need to know basis.

Stephen Pearl (stephenp11) | 272 comments When it comes to romance in action adventure I think it has a place. Think it has a place. Consider the James Bond stories. They are spy stories and definiatly action adventure but they always have a romantic eliment. In my view if you can lift the romance out and still have an action packed story it's action adventure. The romance is the spice in the soup as it were not the stock.

Stephen Pearl (stephenp11) | 272 comments Hi all, Just wanted to let everyone know that Nukekubi, my paranormal action adventure, has been officially launched today.

From ancient times nukekubi have haunted the land of Japan. Living as men by day, these beasts slip their heads free of their flesh at night and go in search of human prey. These hapless souls are driven into a terrified madness that results in their death.
Ray McAndrues, a modern-day wizard, must neutralize a nukekubi that is feasting on the people of Toronto. He is aided by Cathy, a sorceress of numerous charms, and Toshiro and Kunio, two, Japanese, martial artists who have made hunting nukekubi their lives' work.
As the quest plays out, questions arise. Who is hunting who? How can you slay the beast that stalks the night without slaying the man who walks the day? What is the strange, millennia-old connection that binds Ray to the beast, and will it help or hinder the quest?

Thanks for this...someone asked me if "Without Remorse" was true Clancy or not. Since it was my first book to read of his, I wasn't sure. I'll look at Wikipedia to see more of what you're talking about.

I agree that it has its place. Our book Call Sign: Wrecking Crew has an element of romance but it could be taken out and the story would still be action/adventure. I think it adds a little more human element to the characters.

Alan McDermott (jambalian) | 25 comments When I started writing Gray Justice it was intended to be a thriller, but a few of the comments from readers (of this book and the sequel) have praised the action scenes, so I hope you find it appropriate.

If not a true action/adventure, it might be a decent action/thriller.

All the best,

Alan

Glad to find such a group as this. My second novel has just been released. I write stories that take inspiration from old-Hollywood and the action-oreinted pulps. My author page is here ...

Mike Meyer | 224 comments If you get the chance, you might want to check out my second action/adventure novel, which I just recently published.
Mike

A HAUNTING CARIBBEAN MYSTERY
James Cuffy, better known as Cuff, is living in paradise with his girlfriend, on the small Caribbean island of St. Croix, where the sky is as blue as Cuff's eyes, the ocean as pretty as Rosie's cheeks, where the gentle lapping of the waves is a lullaby, and the swaying of the palm trees is a dance. The sandy beaches are as white as sugar, and the horizon is a world away. St. Croix indeed is paradise, the perfect place for living, laughing, and loving.

But the sandy beaches and the turquoise sea can provide no cover from the deadly eyes of the unknown stalker pursuing Cuff. Murder leads to murder as he attempts to untangle the terrible web in which he has suddenly become entangled.

The twists and turns are relentless, the roads of the fast action leading in all directions, but time is running out, and Cuff, his faithful Rosie at his side, knows it.

Stephen Jared | 7 comments Pulp Fiction Reviews covered my latest novel. Here's an excerpt --

"Author Stephen Jared is an accomplished film actor with a vast knowledge of early Hollywood history which he deftly employs here by creating a truly authentic background for his wonderfully crafted mystery. Refusing to mimic classical noir settings, Jared presents a truly straight forward and original narrative that moves at its own leisurely pace. Then when the reader least expects it, he delivers scenes of gut wrenching violence in such a cold, calculating style, this reviewer was reminded of the late Mickey Spillane’s work."

Ian | 11 comments Firstly, thanks to Vincent for creating this group, and the invite.
My first book was originally published in 2003! It is the true story of a British agent, part of a U.N. operation against the drug war lords of the 'Golden triangle' This book tells the story of 'Ro' and how it came about a squad of soldiers, only partly trained as special forces were sent to get her.
There was all manner of skullduggery going on behind the scenes, involving Irish terrorists, not to mention 'civil servants' with strange loyalties.
It is as near the truth as could be published, all the 'good guys' approved it before publication, although some names were changed. As for the not so good guys, well if the cap fits, wear it!
Recently re-released as a kindle at 77p in the U.K. and at $1 [plus tax] in the 'States.
A word of warning, it made strong men cry! and the bad language is almost all in one chapter.
It was re released to assist in promoting 'Timothy Pilgrim' as my new one 'the undefended land is due out in about a month!.
All the best Paul Rix [oldgeezer]

Ian | 11 comments My current release, 'The Day the Ravens Died' is about a fictional Anti terrorist unit and their attempts to twart terrorist attacks.
The best review I had went like this, [I wish I had thought of it]
"Pick it up if you dare, put it down if you can. When you've read it, think about it! Sleep well"
A lady from Ohio I think, contacted me with this message.
" I picked up your book, I couldn't put it down! When I finished, I thought about it. I haven't slept since, I'm on three valium a day, I used to go to London twice a year on business and I'm never going again!"
I did point out it was fiction!! [mostly]

Available on Amazon @£9.99p and Kindle at about £3.35
or dollar equivelent.
Oh, the Ravens are the iconic birds at The Tower of London.

Vickie Britton | 21 comments Our new Kindle/eBook release, Lost City of the Condor, would be of special interest to those who enjoy watching Discover and enjoy reading archaeological adventures. It is part of the Arla Vaughn Pre-Columbian Treasure Series and involves a Inca ruins and burial sites.

While traveling on a local bus in Chinchero, Peru, Arla is approached by a mysterious female peddler who shows her a small, silver warrior. The statue is identical to those found only in rare Inca tombs located high in the Andes. Arla suspects this is a genuine artifact, perhaps stolen from the same Capacocha burial site her co-worker, Lance Hayden, is seeking. When the woman tells her she has many more items for sale, Arla follows her to an abandoned house. Too late, Arla realizes she has fallen into a trap!

Arla gets kidnapped by a group of ruthless thieves who are holding Lance Hayden hostage. They believe Arla’s in possession of a journal, which is the final link to the Lost City and the secret it holds…

Death lurks, biding its time… This is a race against time that takes Arla to a snowy mountain peak and a clash with the looters for the most priceless treasure of all – the golden condor!

The second book in the series began with The Mayan Mask of Death.

A.J. Davidson | 10 comments Churchill's Queen by A.J. Davidson The great Atlantic liners continue to fascinate, no more so than on the centenary of the Titanic’s tragic maiden voyage. James Cameron’s epic is re-released in 3D, the TV mini-series is being aired, and several authors have published books based on that infamous night in April 1912.

If you are one of the thousands captivated by the story, then AJ Davidson’s Churchill’s Queen is sure to also enthral you. Based on actual events, it tells the story behind the RMS Queen Elizabeth’s historic maiden voyage. A fast paced World War II thriller for some, a passionate romance destined to end in tragedy for others. This story appeals to all.

Severed Threads is my first attempt at romantic suspense (action/adventure romance to some folks), and it's already garnered 3 national awards. Yay!!! So here's my blurb for anyone who's interested:

Believing herself responsible for her father’s fatal diving accident, Rachel Lyons has withdrawn from the world and assumed a safe position at a foundation office. When called upon by a museum director to assist her former love interest with the recovery of a cursed relic from a sunken Chinese merchant ship, she has no intention of cooperating – until her brother is kidnapped by a drug-dealing gangster. In order to save him and gain control over her life, Rachel must not only overcome her greatest fears, but also relive the circumstances that lead to her father’s death.

Re video games. I'm sure much the same was said about comic books and yet I feel they nourished my imagination and my sense of adventure (besides making an expert of sorts on all the franchise movies coming out).

I don't know if there's just one set of readers for adventure novels but I feel that the H. Rider Haggard-Eric Ambler crowd tends to be men over 40 -- and as an author I don't have a problem with that. I think the whole publishing profession -- publishers, reviewers, bookstores -- have skewed so far toward book club fodder (and most book club members are women), that this audience has been somewhat neglected.

Ian | 11 comments Hi,
I've just taken my regular peek at the Amazon rateing for 'RO' on the uk kindle charts! I can't make head nor tale of it as it's up and down like a whores draws! [pardon the expression!] The amount of places it goes up seems to have little to do with sales numbers, 2 will often send it up more than 4, yet it can drop more in 12 hours than in a couple of days with no sales!
I suppose it is all to do with %ages and how many sales over all.
Hey-ho, onwards and [hopefully] upwards.
