Richard Hackett Jr (rhack) | 18 comments I recently released my historical fiction novel THE BLACK DRAGONS

The Black Dragons by Richard A Hackett Jr

This book was based in the late 1700's just prior to the American Revolutionary war with England. This book was an absolute joy to write.

Here is one reader review that I thought captured the story beautifully:

"Just like people, there are times when we prejudge a book, only to be completely surprised by it once we read it. The Black Dragons was NOT a shallow “pirate” novel for young boys as the book cover first led me to think; instead it was about a very deep and special journey that two unlikely friends are forced to take when they are caught up in the politics of nations vying for control of the American Colonies and the Caribbean Islands. Although filled with action and surprising twists, the author also carefully wove into the story the values of loyalty and friendship in the face of hatred and prejudice and he displayed the beauty, power and value of a man’s character, something that seems to be a fading quality in today’s youth. The story of these men will encourage, challenge, and inspire you as you cheer for them, fear for them, and weep with them (not all of the tears or sad ones). It is a great book for all ages and all genders..."

Andi Neal (andineal) | 2 comments Hello All! Just wanted to let you know about Unraveled! It just released in March and is a fast paced, action/adventure with twists and turns that will keep you guessing until the very end! Here's the synopsis and a link to my webpage as well as a link to the book!

In the national capital, politics are the name of the game. No one is more aware of this than FBI Special Agent Kat Winters. But when she is assigned to investigation of the kidnapping of a senator's daughter, it's clear that there is more to this case than meets the eye. Teaming up with disheveled and often bewildered computer programmer, Pete Douglas, the two set off into the unknown land of Colombia to follow the only lead they have.

Meanwhile, already in the heart of the Colombian jungle, undercover DEA agents, Riley Dawson and Jack Randall find themselves in a heap of trouble as an unidentified American woman threatens to blow their cover. As the two separate to investigate this new introduction, Jack faces a group he's not sure he can trust, and Riley must make the decision to attempt a daring rescue from behind enemy lines.

Thrown from treacherous treks through the jungle into the political arena of Washington, D. C., Unraveled forces this team of unlikely partners to face the deadliest and the most shocking of enemies. Unraveling the threads of the tangled web of lies and deception will become a matter of life or death. Together they must find the strength to face their fears and survive their fate.

James Kellogg (jdkellogg) | 16 comments E-Force is a different kind of thriller. Colt Kelley is not a cop or a spy. He's a disillusioned employee of an environmental organization in Aspen. E-Force is a clandestine group of militant radicals engaged in a campaign of destruction. A dark conspiracy lurking below the eco-terrorist facade thrusts Colt into the cross hairs of law enforcement and a lethal network of merciless thugs and corrupt cops. Pressed into a race against time and ruthless evil, Colt must stop E-Force from hurtling toward an unthinkable act of terror.

I'm not sure what Steampunk is but I can tell you that Action/Adventure has a lot of books in competition on Amazon. I recently re-vamped our category on there to Military/War and Political. Now we are getting more sales. So you might want to take that into consideration.

Of course our book is more Military and Political than Action/Adventure. I hope you get an answer from someone with a lot more experience or at least one that knows about Steampunk.

Robert Pike | 1 comments Hi I'm the author of WHITE KNEES OF HANOI SERIES and I would suspect that most of you didn't know that Canada had peacekeepers stationed in Hanoi during the Vietnam War. That's right. From 1954 to 1973 Canada had maintained several observe groups to report on belligerent acts by the opposing side, mainly the US. As a result Canada was always charged to have been working for the US but that wasn't always true. Canada worked for many sides in some small way or another.

These books I have written and continue to write are about possible adventures of one man Corporal Bishop. Bishop is a Canadian born citizen who was tossed out of the Canadian Army when they found out he was to young and he went to the US and joined the American forces. After serving in South Vietnam with the 101st Airborne Bishop gets out of the service and returns to Canada. He then joins the Canadian Army and is sent to North Vietnam as a peacekeeper.

Take a moment to read the first few chapters of BISHOPS PACKAGE, OR BISHOPS RESOLUTION and soon BISHOPS EASTER to see if this might be a good read. Hope you enjoy it and then comment on Amazon, or B&N or here on what you thought. Thanks much, looking forward to reading you.

Read the Award winning story of the first Special Forces Team into Afghanistan after 9/11. Written like a screenplay, this fictional account of the opening salvo to the War in Afghanistan told by the men who lived it. Sure, there is action, explosions and gunfights, but what the reader gets in this book is the personal relationships among the men of this Special Forces A-Team. The reader gets a glimpse into the lives of these exceptional characters.

Kaylin McFarren (kaylinmcfarren) | 29 comments My first action/adventure novel - Severed Threads - is now listed for pre-sale on Amazon.com and will be available on July 1st! I'm very excited about this one, as it's the first in my 3 book series and the feedback I've received so far is awesome. So here's the gist of the story:

Believing herself responsible for her father’s fatal diving accident, Rachel Lyons has withdrawn from the world and assumed a safe position at a foundation office. When called upon by a museum director to assist her former love interest with the recovery of a cursed relic from a sunken Chinese merchant ship, she has no intention of cooperating – until her brother is kidnapped by a drug-dealing gangster. In order to save him and gain control over her life, Rachel must not only overcome her greatest fears, but also relive the circumstances that lead to her father’s death.

I also created a book trailer on my MAC using iMovie and hope this grabs your attention: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qEYslH...

Alex (alexlukeman) | 63 comments I think a good action/adventure novel must be a page turner; have unique twists to the plot as the action unfolds, something new (since everyone has done the terrorist thing, etc., including me); involve the reader with the characters; above all, be believable without being tedious. For me, that means if someone gets shot, there's a consequence. No one walks away from mortal wounds. I really don't need three pages of detail about that latest bomb...a page turner is just that, it flows and you don't want to put it down because you're hooked in the story.

The beginning has to be right or the rest of the book will deteriorate into confusion. I admit, I can get obsessed about it, but it HAS to be right. Son Of Adam, takes us on the thrill ride exposing the monster lurking inside each of us.

Cal, a black, rough tempered, hard-nosed automotive engineer driving his way around life’s twisting race-track until the second Gulf War places him on a collision course with a pedophile serial killer in a distant war-torn land. Lives changed forever in an instant of horror.

Seventeen girls missing and seventeen weeping mothers with no hope of rescue confuse the soldier’s motives and missions. A small, foreign village with a fledgling infrastructure barely able to support traffic stops was a pedophiles playground. The shadows of war and the prowling despot have free reign over the frightened village families until the killer gets sloppy, exposing his bloodstained trail. All the gory pieces fall together and the Army platoon moves in for the arrest. Mission accomplished for all, except for the soldier that found him – the one who had to search the killer’s bedroom and catalog all of his bloody souvenirs.

Back home and years later, the demons of that horrible day are still lurking in the darkness, pushing him from odd job to odd job around the country, spiraling an out of control life but weaving it back together with help from some unlikely outsiders – just like him.
The suspenseful story winds its way from the foothills of the Alps to the foothills of the Appalachians as a new journey begins. With twists and turns along the way, finishing in the unwanted answer to an age old question. A life redeemed in the midst of disgraceful mistakes and youth’s tiresome baggage, bringing him back to the tender answer to a divisive social issue: How can anyone be Pro-Life and Pro-Death Penalty?

From first homes to the German Oktoberfest and jumbo jet rides across the Atlantic Ocean to automotive assembly plants in the new south, Son Of Adam, exposes the inner workings of the fall-out from the heinous crimes and bloody investigation, pieced by painful piece.

Be careful what you ask… Son Of Adam.

Michael Parker (michaelparker) | 99 comments How do I decide whether my book is an action adventure when it clearly overlaps into an historical adventure? I have just released HELL'S GATE, which was first published in 2007 by Robert Hale of London. It is set in British East Africa in 1898, and is inspired by historical fact. But most people would assume that an historical novel means perspiring damsels and strutting dandies, or duplicitous dukes and parlour maids. Perhaps a conspiracy between the earls of England against the king, with mischief making from France thrown in for good measure. I class my novel as the same kind of genre for which Wilbur Smith is famous. This is not a bodice ripping drama, but a fool bloodied account of the dangers that beset the British as they constructed a railway line from Mombasa on the east coast of Africa to Lake Victoria in Uganda. The political intrigue is developed from the reality at the time as the Imperial German government seek to win the race to Uganda and hence control of the Jewel of Africa as it was known then. And into the mix comes Reuben Cole and his young son, David who is kidnapped by an evil slaver Piet Snyder, the beautiful Hannah Bowers and Major Kingsley Webb commandant of the British East Africa Rifles. And on top of that, 10,000 screaming Masai intent on wiping out the whole of Nairobi railway camp and the two thousand souls that dwell there. Rivetting stuff. It's now available on Kindle. Why not check it out?

You are very welcome.

There are other groups that allow self promotion within Goodreads. I think the first thing you need is to determine what target audience you are trying to reach. Your book may be more of a Mystery, thriller, suspense type of book. Make that you have the correct genre string in Amazon. If you can narrow the type of book in Amazon that works the best. When you search for groups under Goodreads groups look for ones that caterer to your target audience. Make sure of the rules when you go in. Some groups allow self-promotion only under certain folders. Others allow it in all of them. Occasionally you will find a kind soul who will tweet or Facebook share your book with others. As with anything it takes time to build up a following. The other piece of advice I give to everyone is to pay it forward. If someone has been kind to you, then please be kind to the next person who is in need of assistance.

Hope this helps out.

G. (grefuture) | 36 comments Lynn, thanks for the advice. I didn't expect overnight success or anything (even though that would of been nice...lol) but I just want folks to read it; the reviews right now are more important, and I think that the rest will take care of itself. It is more of an action adventure piece, with a bit of humor sprinkled in (despite the subject matter)...any suggestions where to look?
