Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Okay, thanks to you ladies, I applied to be one of "Lisa's Divas."

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Lisarenee wrote: "How's your headache Lisa?"

Still got it. The pill only dulled it. I should take another, but the are so expensive. **sigh** I could buy two books with what one costs.

Lisarenee | 7659 comments I hope you get to join me. That would be awesome!

Lisarenee | 7659 comments I finally caught up. Woohoo!

Lisarenee | 7659 comments Not exactly how I picture Hardy, but it was the only one I could find with chest hair. lol I can't remember what color his hair is.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments That's "silky mink brown," Jill! LOL!

Love the pic, Lisarenee. ☺

Lisarenee | 7659 comments Jill, I have no idea who the guy is.

Lisarenee, Jill's right, it's Chris Evans. ^_^ I still haven't got my ideal Hardy yet. He's a difficult man to cast, for me.

But yummy pic, Lisarenee!

Lisarenee | 7659 comments Chris may be a young version of Hardy.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments @ Lisarenee

#8 – Yes, it is little things like that that make Kleypas the subtle and wonderful author she is. I would LOVE to know if he is doing it consciously, subconsciously, or unconsciously! Did I cover all of them?

#12 – I ♥ the gift also. **sigh** I think Vanessa is a complex person, as you can see by my revised responses. I do think there are people out there who think they can get away with murder and who do throw others under the bus with subtle innuendo.

#13 – It is what makes this book so delish, b/c you do have to wonder!

#16 – I guess only your good friends can laugh at you and have it end up laughing with you.

#17 – Weird: Wasn’t it! Such a twisted “control thing.” Couldn’t figure out why he didn’t think Haven was classy enough.

Re: my headache – I just caved and took another pill; feels like this one worked. Thanks, Lisarenee! ☺ Glad you’re feeling better too.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Nice. ☺

Lady Jayne *~*The Beach Bandida*~* (ladyjayne) | 155 comments I had a lovely image of Liberty, but can't for the life of me remember her name now, and I lost it when my laptop was stolen. I know I posted pics somewhere in the We Love LK Group but I really can't seem to find them now. *sad sigh*

Lady Jayne *~*The Beach Bandida*~* (ladyjayne) | 155 comments I think Rob Estes has that mature, man-in-control vibe that Gage has but also looks like he can be loving and gentle. And he has this “look”, like someone who is protective and would be great big brother, friend and lover, like Gage. But that’s just my humble opinion. ^_^ LOL

Lady Jayne *~*The Beach Bandida*~* (ladyjayne) | 155 comments Gage actually has steel gray eyes, I believe. From what I remember. Sometimes Rob's eyes look more gray than blue.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Yes, Gage had gray/silver eyes, unlike his brothers and sister, who have brown. **sigh**

Lady Jayne *~*The Beach Bandida*~* (ladyjayne) | 155 comments Lisa Kay wrote: "Yes, Gage had gray/silver eyes, unlike his brothers and sister, who have brown. **sigh**"

Ah, yes, "silver"! I remember that description now that you mention it, Lisa Kay. Thanks! There are some descriptions in SD, aren't they, of how his eyes sort of glow with that silver-gray colour? And how intense his gaze can be on Liberty? Or am I just projecting here, and wanting Gage to stare at me with intensity! LOL It's been a while since I read SD.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments I think she said they were stormy or flashed lightening. Or both. LOL! ☺

LOLOL! No, I cant! I mean, that's why I didn't participate in some of those other questions re. BED. I need to dig out my book. I do have a fairly good memory, though, for the things I can still visualise in my head.

What I remember most are the passages/quotes/scenes that affected/moved me the most. I can "see" them in my head and still feel them, too. Also, my impressions or understanding of the characters, stick with me. Lisa Kleypas books and characters have that effect on me. They feel so real and stick with me. I just love her writing!

Lady Jayne *~*The Beach Bandida*~* (ladyjayne) | 155 comments Lisa Kay wrote: "I think she said they were stormy or flashed lightening. Or both. LOL! ☺"

Oohh...stormy and flashing lighting? *swoons* LOL That's why I must remember his eyes as "intense". ^_^

Lady Jayne *~*The Beach Bandida*~* (ladyjayne) | 155 comments I completely forgot about that Aerodome Phenomenon, though, until Lisa Kay explained! And THEN I remembered. Thanks, Lisa Kay! ^_^

I guess I felt reluctant to say that Haven was a "magnet" for people with NPD, because it somehow implies it's her fault. I don' think it's her fault that those poeple are drawn to her. But it IS within her power as to how she allows them to make her feel.

I feel like it's more that the people with NPD, being master manipulators of emotions, have this radar for the people who are susceptible to their manipulation. They really do have such an inflated sense of self, that they can never do anything wrong, and they know just how to push people's buttons. Sometimes, it's so subtle, that you really don't realise how belittling they are, and the person being belittled doesn't realise it either! These NPD type people NEED to point out other's shortcomings and failures to inflate themselves, even more. The problem is, if we use Freudian theory, they have a poorly developed "super-ego", which plays the critical and moralizing role. Thus, they very seldom, if not at all, see their behaviour as "wrong".

Sorry, Psychology-talk coming out here! LOL

Lady Jayne *~*The Beach Bandida*~* (ladyjayne) | 155 comments Deep down inside, though, I feel like people with NPD are really insecure people. It's just that THEY would never see themselves as insecure or in need of improvement! LOL

Aaahh...melting chocolate brown eyes... *chocoholic's mesmerised drool*

^_^ LOL

I love descriptions like vibrant or brilliant blue eyes though. Eyes like a crystal blue aquamarine tropical sea. *sighs and swoons* ^_^

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Yes, I think people with NPD are able to find those people who really want to please others. I know my wanting to please is way off the chart. It took me ages to say, "No." And I still feel guilty when I do. Like worry and fret guilty - or "wilt guilt."

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Oh, I meant to say on post #169 - and I don't think "People Pleasing" is a fault.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Lisa Kay’s Answers to Jill's Questions for Chapters 11-15

18. Somehow I didn't see the flooded elevator coming. Texas + elevator = flood?? Anyway back at Hardy's place Haven is keen for lurve, but Hardy says no. Anyone else thought that this was going to be their first love scene? Anyone else glad that it wasn't and that Hardy acted so honorably? (Hardy's restraint is such a turn-on!) Comments please.
Texans say the reason there are no Olympic skiers from their state is because it is flat, flat, flat. LOL! No hills to ski down. Flat land tends to flood. I did think it was going to be their first love scene when I first read it. It was a turn-on, and I think he was right to hold off. There were too many contributing factors in the equation.

19. Vanessa is, IMO, portrayed a little OTT as the classic b!tch. Nevertheless, I just wish Haven would stop being so civil towards her and tell her to p.o. Anyone else with me? And have you ever met or been confronted by a Vanessa in RL?
Oh, I’ve answered this, in post #126.

20. “It occurred to me that I was a lot more nervous about the idea of sleeping with Hardy than I had been with Nick as a virgin. Probably because with the first guy, you figured you got a beginner's pass.” I love that line. How true is that? (You don't have to go into specifics.)
LOL! Okay, I’ll try not to share too much, Jill. But I did love that line. I remember the second guy I “slept” with wanted me to get on top and I had NO clue what to do other than sit there. Ooops. . . I guess I missed the mark on not sharing too much. Anywayz, my point is that, yes, I could totally relate. At least I can laugh about it years later.

21. “It struck me that Hardy, a seasoned, high-octane male, was the authentic version of what Nick was always pretending to be.” Don't you love the way that LK can write? I have trouble imagining exactly what Hardy looks like. (Unlike Jayne who excels). Does anyone have an image they'd like to share of what Hardy looks like.
Yes, absolutely! She uses an economy of words, yet picks each one to exactly get a point across and say something eloquently. Oh, you’ll have to give me time to look… I think I’ve seen someone post a good Hardy pic.

22. Haven accuses Hardy of acting “high-handed” when he gets rid of Nick (politely I thought) from Haven's apartment. Do you think it was high-handed? Personally if that's high-handed, I'll take a double serve. To me he was being protective. In his words “a man” (yes please) and “a Texan” (yes yes please). Thoughts?
Nope. LOL! **snort, snort** Yes, he was being both of those !

23. Finally. Was their first (full) love scene everything you'd hoped?
Yup! And then some. ☺ Worth the wait.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments From what I've read about abuse, there is a "chemistry" involved too. So of like what it like when two people commit a crime who otherwise wouldn't. I think the way Haven spoke to Hardy about wanting to make love and him wanting to wait would have gotten her hit by Nick. That doesn't mean she was "asking for it."

BTW, it was very interesting to listen to Haven's tone of voice on the audiobook format. She was a lot more "smart mouthed" than I pictured her (do I mean heard her in my mind?) when I "read" her in print.

I agree, Lisa Kay. I am totally one of those people, too!

But I've also been wondering, recently, whether this really is who I am innately, or was I conditioned this way because of my father? The whole "nature" versus "nurture" debate. I think, innately, I was a "sensitive" child. Always conscious of emotions and things around me and sought to please and want to make people happy. And my father's behaviours reinforced the "guilt", it made me feel like I couldn't do anything right. But I don't believe he consciously did this. I believe he loves me and thought he was encouraging/guiding me.

I see Churchill as being a lot like my father. Churchill is always pointing out Haven's mistakes. It infuriated me! But then again, like I said, I could be projecting here! LOL

I was always cautious in relationships with boys/men, though, and I would never allow myself to ever be in a relatonship with someone controlling like my dad. Never. My husband is the complete opposite of my dad.

I don't see my dad as a bad person, though. He is a really generous person. He has done well for himself, financially, and gives to the less fortunate, and has given me a lot like paying for all my education etc. He just always has to be in control, he's always right, and he's always the best at what he does. I couldn't possibly compete.

I mean, what do you all think of Churchill?? I'm interested to hear your impressions/thoughts on Churchill, as I'm worried I maybe AM projecting! :-P I mean, Churchill is a diferent person through Liberty's eyes than he is through Haven's. I think it's because he is harder on his own daughter, though, and with Liberty, his feelings towards her are all tied up with his feelings towards her mother. What do you think?

P.S. Sorry if I'm jumping ahead re. Churchill. I believe there are more scenes between him and Haven later in the book...from what I remember.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Jayne wrote: "I'm worried I maybe AM projecting! :-P I mean, Churchill is a diferent person through Liberty's eyes than he is through Haven's."

You might be projecting a little, Jayne, but NOT much. I think Churchill is different with Liberty. This happens, just like with people in real life. I think his expectations were different for his daughter and I think Kleypas wanted him to represent that fraction of the population that doesn't realize that abuse crosses all ages, ethnicities, races, socio-economical, and educational lines. I have read people say in their reviews that this would never happen to a feminist that went to Wesley. Yeah, right. I think Kleypas gave her that back-ground for a reason. The abuse seeks up on her; it is a gradual, insidious process that can happen to most anyone.

An interesting study I read about during my nursing career was that if you teach your child to swim, they are a more independent adult and more likely to avoid abusive relationships, or are able to get out of them when they discover they are in one. All I can say is, "Thanks for the swim lessons, Mom! Bless you." By the way, my mom (who was very opposed to my first marriage) NEVER said, “I told you so.”

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments I remember when I first left my first husband I was feeling totally lost. I went to the “Free Legal Aid Clinic.” The guy just shook his head at me and said, “You’ve got it made. You’re young, you’re healthy, you’re educated, and you have a family who loves you. I get women in here who have never even written a check before.”

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Figuratively! My mother was WONDERFUL!

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Couldn’t find what I wanted for Hardy, but this guy is close. I mean, Hardy is a big dude – bigger than the Travis boys. Alas, his nose is too straight and he doesn't have enough chest hair.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Isn't there a computer program that can do that?

Lady Jayne *~*The Beach Bandida*~* (ladyjayne) | 155 comments @Lisa Kay: You were very blessed to have a mum like that, Lisa Kay.

I think my mum is an amazingly strong, patient and forgiving person. I certainly don't think I could put up with what she does! I don't believe she puts up with my dad out of weakness, though. She does so because she took her vows seriously and because she is such a strong, loving and forgiving person. But a person can only take so much, you know? I do believe she believes she isn't smart. Which makes me sad. Just because she only finished high school, doesn't make her not smart. She is knowledgeable about lots of things. But hearing him call her "stupid", for little mistakes, makes me so mad. I believe that she could live fine without him. He, on the other hand, would be lost without her. She does so much for him.

I completely agree about this kind of abuse being gradual and insidious and sneaking up on the person. A lot of people wouldn't even consider it "abuse". It is not obvious like Nick hitting Haven.

Re. Churchill: Lisa Kay wrote: "I think his expectations were different for his daughter and I think Kleypas wanted him to represent that fraction of the population that doesn't realize that abuse crosses all ages, ethnicities, races, socio-economical, and educational lines."

Excellent point, Lisa Kay! I think there is a contrast between Nick's abuse and the way that Churchill treated Haven, which to me was also a form of control and disempowerment, IMHO. And yes, it can happen to anyone.

Lisa Kay wrote: "I meant to say on post #169 - and I don't think "People Pleasing" is a fault."

I don't think "people pleasing" is a fault, either, so long as we don't let people take advantage of us.
