My wife DVR's all the shows we watch for that same reason, she hates the commercials...well most of them lol :-)

p.s. still loving both Grimm and Once upon a time...kinda got a soft spot for the evil queen/mayor of Storybrook, am I mad!

message 52: by Terra (new)

Terra Synn (terrasynn) | 22 comments I like how they modernize the fairy tales and make them dark like the real grimm fairy tales are

message 53: by Paula (new)

Paula (pauldajo) Darn, Grimm wasn't on last night. The final episode of Chuck was on instead. Chuck was good.. Hopefully, Grimm will return next week.

message 54: by Cloey.k (new)

Cloey.k (cloeyk) | 20 comments @Mark, One of my bosses has a soft spot for the evil witch too. Hmmm could be the pretty face?

I had a soft spot for the last sherif ;)

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) Yes love Grimm and Once upon a time. Grimm is more adult and Once upon a time lighter and a bit more out there. Both good. Also really digging Revenge

message 56: by Nichole (new)

Revenge is Brilliant!

I've never heard of Revenge. What is that one about, and what channel is it on?

message 59: by Julia (new)

Julia | 615 comments Does Revenge have a fantasy element?

message 60: by Paula (last edited Jan 30, 2012 06:17AM) (new)

Paula (pauldajo) Revenge is on ABC. No fantasy element. The main character is out for revenge because of the wrongs done to her father. Lots of rich people involved. I like the show.

Haven't checked out Revenge, but love Grimm and Once Upon a Time.

Susan Stec (thegratefulundead) | 95 comments Anyone watching Alcatraz? I can't figure out where that one is going, but I'm in for the ride. Super freaky.

message 63: by Terra (new)

Terra Synn (terrasynn) | 22 comments I have watched a little bit of Revenge, I didn't like it much and the only actress on there I have seen before is the one that the "revenge" girl is trying to get back at.

message 64: by Julia (new)

Julia | 615 comments I'm reserving judgement on "Alcatraz," so far. And wishing it was super freakier... So far, the only likeable character is Dr Soto, and I wonder what connection he (and his family) is going to have Alcatraz in 1963...

message 65: by Coral (new)

Coral (coralm) | 26 comments I like Revenge. It reminds me of less crazy version of Twin Peaks.

message 66: by Paula (new)

Paula (pauldajo) I bought 'The Complete Grimm's Fairy Tales' to refresh my memory. I didn't find the tales as grim as I'd thought they were. The characters are so undeveloped that authors who write books using the the tales as a base basically can give the characters a wide variety of personalities. Of course, good should remain good and evil remain evil. The grim part is usually in the retribution or punishment phase. Birds picking out eyes, the evil person being forced to dance in red hot iron shoes until they are dead or burned alive in their own ovens.

Me too! I didn't mean it to come off as disparaging that Revenge was 'less crazy'. Just that R doesn't have those bizarre side-plots that made TP famous. Check out an episode or two, you might like it.

Oh, I so loved TP!! Guess I'll have to take a look at Revenge.

How about the upcoming "The River"? I think it's a mini-series. It looks promising, though.

Susan Stec (thegratefulundead) | 95 comments Coral, i didn't think that. Just happy to find another Twin Peaker. Lol And Michelle, I saw The River trailer, it looks awesome too. Thank god for TiVo, right.

I don't think I'll be able to watch that one. I can't take much shaky-cam, and it looks like the River will have plenty of that.

Yeah, that can be hard to take. My son convinced me to watch the movie "Cloverfield", and my stomach was churning at the end.

I'm going to DVR The River and at least give it a chance.

message 73: by Paula (new)

Paula (pauldajo) On 'Once Upon a Time' some of the deviations from the core fairy tales bug me, but on 'Grimm' the connection is much more loose. The other beings that cause trouble are basically monsters without being connected to a specific tale. The fairy tales evloved as a heads up to the dangers of these underground peoples and to teach a lesson, of course.

message 74: by Barry (new)

Barry James (mondragoran) | 25 comments My wife and I like Grimm, but I'm getting impatient to find out why the heck all the monsters are so scared of him. His only talent appears to be "monster vision."

I totally agree. I don't get it. I was really liking it, but if he doesn't gain some super power soon I may drift off.

message 77: by Chantal (new)

Chantal Halpin | 21 comments My daughter has just got me into this. I'm looking forward to finding out what he can do too. I really like his 'friend', sorry not sure what his friend is, it's a funny name and he looks a bit like a wolf. He got him to guard his aunt in hospital for him and things got a bit out of hand!

message 78: by Marsha (new)

Marsha | 114 comments I'm not sure that he's supposed to have a 'super power' other than the innate desire to kill all of the 'monsters.' I think his understanding of the creatures that he's supposed to be hunting and exterminating has evolved from his ancestors. By that I mean that he seems to see beyond their exterior and understand that not all are bad/evil and that his role as the Grimm (to exterminate the creatures) needs to be more targeted to those who are actually causing trouble. I think he sees his role as the Grimm more like his role as a police officer - acting as a deterrent to doing evil and then stopping those that are doing bad things. It sounds like his ancestors were out to simply destroy all of the creatures, whether they were doing evil or not. Like his friend who is no longer practicing his savage ways (I'm totally blanking on the names right now - I don't know why). Anyway - that's my take on the entire show. I love this show. I've recorded the River and have yet to get a chance to watch it, but I'm looking forward to seeing it soon.

message 79: by Paula (new)

Paula (pauldajo) Monroe is the Wieder Blutbad. I want to find out what Captain Renard's role is. I know he is connected to the underground beings and he seems like the head/ruler of his territory. But Renard is also a cop and he seems to thinks like a cop. I'm getting used to Nick Burkhardt (Grimm) not being full of supernatural strength. I was expecting a Buffy type fighting, but I can go the cop like fighting route, also. I'm sure there will be a lot surprises and I hope Grimm continues for many seasons.

That's right! I want to know more about Captain Renard's role too. To me though, he seems a little shady. Like he has to pretend to capture all of the beings because that's his role as the Captain, but he really wants to get rid of Nick b/c he's the Grimm. I don't know - I'm so curious to see how this will play out.

message 81: by Julia (new)

Julia | 615 comments I hadn't caught on that the captain's name was Renard. (I really liked the actor in "Crusade" where he played young Adama's loving gay uncle who is also a mafioso.) Do all of the creatures have German or German- sounding names? What are the Grimms relationship to the Brothers? It may be safe to assume that Renard is some sort of fox creature, with a name like that.

message 82: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Scott (michellescottfiction) | 721 comments Mod
I think that a lot of the creatures have Germanic sounding names. I don't remember much German from high school, so I was wondering if the werewolves (bludenbach?) translated into something since, if I'm correct about this, blud means blood auf Deutsch.

message 83: by Julia (new)

Julia | 615 comments Paula said that Monroe is a Weider Blutbad. Blutbad is bloodbath, I think. Wieder I dunno, anymore.

message 84: by Paula (new)

Paula (pauldajo) Blood bath, interesting. I googled wieder and it means again. I think I'll stick with Monroe. so much easier.. I can't seem to retain the germanic names, flows right out of my brain.

I wish Nick's aunt had lived longer. She was a butt kicking fighter. Nick would do better with more knowledge. But in his ignorance Nick may be handling the the creatures more fairly.

message 85: by Julia (new)

Julia | 615 comments I googled Weider Blutbaden and got a wikipedia site about Grimm. I was right about Blutbaden meaning bloodbath. Weider is how Monroe describes himself, as a no longer active blood drinker.

Nick does need a Giles-type.

message 86: by Coral (new)

Coral (coralm) | 26 comments There definitely is something shady about the captain, but I think right now he's just keeping an eye on Nick. It all ties back to that episode with bee lady. (view spoiler)

message 87: by Paula (new)

Paula (pauldajo) I really felt sorry for the bee lady.

message 89: by Andrew (new)

Andrew (kelevra) I love Grimm. Especially since it's filmed where I live lol.

I started watching Once Upon A Time but then lost interest.

Revenge is amazing. Love that show so much.

The Vampire Diaries is another show I love.

message 90: by Julia (new)

Julia | 615 comments Grimm is set in Portland, which I like. Is it also filmed there? (Or do they use Vancouver as a stand-in and because they've got the folks, studios and it's relatively cheap?)

message 91: by Paula (new)

Paula (pauldajo) I googled where the show was filmed and looks like it's being filmed in Portland.

I like Revenge too! I watched maybe half an episode of Vampire Diaries. It just couldn't stand up to Buffy for me.

I do like the Portland setting as well, not enough gets filmed in that part of the country. It's so beautiful.

I saw the movie 'Gone' over the weekend, and it also took place in Portland. Lovely forests. Creepy bad guys :P

message 96: by Paula (new)

Paula (pauldajo) I wish Captain Renard hadn't acted like a fool in last week's episode. I know outside forces compelled Renard, but I was so embarassed for him. I like the Captain aloof and in charge.

message 97: by Julia (last edited Mar 07, 2012 06:54AM) (new)

Julia | 615 comments I dunno, Michelle. I kinda liked the geas (according to wikipedia its spelled geis in Irish Gaelic, geas is Scottish)-- it's a magical compulsion and a sometimes theme in fantasy-- that the coins gave the bearer. Seeing the Captain's dreams while he had the coins was very interesting. And that he wasn't aloof in this circumstance told us how powerful the coins were.

message 98: by Andrew (new)

Andrew (kelevra) I didn't know Gone took place in Portland. lol

message 99: by Paula (new)

Paula (pauldajo) This is true Julia. I thought I detected a little shiver from Nick when he handled the coins. I'm a bit worried about the coins' hiding place. I wonder if the captain will pretend nothing happened. This Friday is dragon week.

message 100: by Ken (new)

Ken Magee I started reading this thread because I've been watching Grimm and wanted to say that I'm liking it. But the thread has given me a couple of new things to check out - Alcatraz and Revenge - and reminded me that I need to watch Twin Peaks again.

Thank you posters!
