Sue Erickson | 673 comments Are you going to do spoiler spaces? I'm not good with those. That's why I didn't do the Bronze Horseman group read.
As far as Jamie having to die so Claire could see his ghost form, let's not forget that Jamie would be 200yrs. old. Even he might be ready to enjoy eternal peace! Merry Christmas everyone!

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 3151 comments Sorry it took so long for me to respond Sue, with the holidays I was off and on so sporadically.

No, this group read will work the same as the Outlander thread would. If you are discussing Outlander, book 1, then there is no need to mark your spoilers. I will make sure in the subject line that people know that there are spoilers. HOWEVER, if you want to say something about any of the following books in the series, I will ask that you mark those with spoiler tags. Not all of our members have read the entire series at this point, and we should show caution, for their sake.

Sue Erickson | 673 comments Thanks Wendy. That's great.

taita | 6 comments I'm interested in doing a re-read of Outlander. How is this generally going to work? Will someone be posting questions about certain chapters?

message 55: by Teresita (last edited Dec 29, 2011 03:51AM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Teresita A | 531 comments Hi everyone. I would like to join the re-read of Outlander as well, in January. Not sure how that works. But I have to warn you, I am not a fast reader. Thanks, and have Happy New year everyone!

Allen Kelley (apolloallyn) | 12 comments Well having just reread the first book a couple of weeks ago, I'm looking forward to discussing it with everyone!

Kristina (krisstep11) | 8 comments Great idea! I've recommended this series to anyone who will listen.. As they go through it the first time I find I'm forgetting things and wanted to do a re-read before the next one comes out. Can't wait to discuss and find things I might have missed the first time around. Happy reading!

message 58: by Gwennie, biblioholic (new) - rated it 5 stars

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 3151 comments No worries, the reread is 'technically' two months long, before we start Dragonfly. However, I THINK that we're going to do another group read in February too.

Starting January 1st I will use this thread as the reread thread. My goal is every Sunday to post a new topic question (I've got most of the mapped out). This will give us a general topic of discussion for that week, but you're all free to talk about anything. We will not be having a strict schedule of how many pages to read each week, it's read at your own leisure, and the questions will be broad topics, not chapter specific.

Even those who choose not to reread are still welcome to stick around in here and join in with discussion. This is in preparation for the release of Book 8, whenever that should be.

I hope that answered all the questions.

Regina (reginar) Thanks Wendy!

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 3151 comments Thanks! I'm hoping it brings some new discussions to the table. Keeps it fresh. :)

message 63: by Angela (new) - added it

Angela (angelah110) | 40 comments I have read Outlander 3 times, but never with a group. I am looking forward to reading with a group.

Jeanette Saunders (thebrat68) | 6 comments Looking forward to the re-read of this series... I have read it several times but not as a group read. I look forward to seeing how different people see things with different views. I did a reread with my 2 girl friends who never read the series and wow did we all see things differently...

message 65: by Gwennie, biblioholic (new) - rated it 5 stars

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 3151 comments Really quick, in the mass message that I sent out I said that the reread will be going through March... that was a flub. The reread of Outlander will be going through FEBRUARY! March 1st is when the reread of Dragonfly in Amber will start. Please forgive me. :)

Just out of curiosity, how many of you are starting Outlander today?

Goood Morning! Happy 2012 to Everyone! I'm thinking that the best way to ring in the new year is to jump right into to this reread by talking about all of our favorite Fictional Hero... SO, this weeks Topic for Sparking Conversation:

We all have strong feelings for James Fraser... what specific moment really brought him to life for you?

Diane | 1360 comments Wendy F wrote: "Really quick, in the mass message that I sent out I said that the reread will be going through March... that was a flub. The reread of Outlander will be going through FEBRUARY! March 1st is when ..."

I have not started the reread yet so my specifics are rusty. The moment for me was just after she was "rescued" and they were riding back to the castle. Claire was barely dressed and shivering on the horse in front of Jamie. He pulled his plaid around her to keep her warm. I kept thinking how comforting it would be to feel his strong warm body behind me. Then there was the scene when she was tending his wounds up in her room at the castle and she first saw his scars. It was like nothing was held back or reserved. The first time I read the book and knew nothing about the characters I wanted them to be together from that time.

message 67: by Gwennie, biblioholic (new) - rated it 5 stars

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 3151 comments Wow, that was pretty early on. I wasn't sure at that point. The first time I read it I wondered if it would be Dougal, and I was so confused because the back of the book said that the hero of the novel was named Jamie Fraser. Jamie suited the guy she was riding with but his last name was McTavish, lol. It was all so verra confusing.

I agree that the first time Jamie made me swoon was when she was tending to his back and he told her what happened. It was when she reached out and traced each of his scars with her finger and he was silent and still the whole time. That was also the same scene that she cried for loss of Frank and comforted her, which was pretty intense. (plus it had the 'he can ride me anywhere' line, haha.)

But, I think for ME, Jamie slowly became a flesh and blood man over the course of the beginning, but he really popped during their whole marriage. It was before when she insisted on talking to him and he told her that he was happy to marry her, and then during the wedding when he was shaking just like she was, and especially after during their wedding night. Diana Gabaldon gave him so many honest human characteristics that it was like she breathed life into him.

Regina (reginar) Wendy it was the same for me to0. When I read this book, I did not know it was a romance or that Jamie would play a key part -- so for me it was after the wedding, really their wedding night and the escapades after that. Once Jamie was Jamie for me, I went back to re-read certain scenes that I now love -- the first night at the castle, in the kitchen when she is on his lap crying but he becomes arosed and Claire realizes it, the scene in her chamber where Claire is tracing all of his scars, and then the scene where Claire walks in on Jamie making out. For some reason those scenes didn't pop for me the first time when I didn't realize his importance, but after he became JAMIE to me they were important.

message 69: by Gwennie, biblioholic (new) - rated it 5 stars

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 3151 comments Thats exactly how it was for me too. Those scenes became my favorites in my second and third rereads.

Regina (reginar) You referenced Jamie shaking and the power of the wedding effecting him. I remember those visuals made it real for me because I saw Claire as she saw her self -- older and taken. I never realized how much Jamie must have wanted her already. At first I thought the marriage was simply one of convenience for everyone and I even had felt sorry for Jamie! LOL, I think Diana really snuck that one up on me!

message 71: by Gwennie, biblioholic (new) - rated it 5 stars

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 3151 comments She did absolutely sneak that one up on us. And she did it so brilliantly because in the end when Jamie was teasing Claire and Jamie said he realized he loved her when she was sitting on his chest, and Claire asked him if he was saying he married her for love... it was so beautiful.

Anyway, back to the wedding. It was his shaking and his nerves, but also how compassionate and caring he was. Insisting on a wedding dress and holding her on his lap to help soothe their fears before they did the deed.

message 72: by Leea, Escape Artist (new) - rated it 5 stars

Leea | 1239 comments I'm too lazy to look for the quote, but remember when he tells Claire that he knew she was the one when she was beating him half to death for falling off his horse, when he was injured. That and her rip. round. arse! Haha!

I agree with both of you, I didn't know how much Jamie truly loved Claire before they married till later. Plus with Jamie, we know how he takes his vows - to the grave.

I think I fell in love with Jamie, when they finally made it to the Castle and Claire was mending his wounds and she fell apart in his lap and the held her. I remember her describing how warm and safe he felt. Like his heat just enveloped her.

This will be my first reread and i'm so excited! Thanks for posting the discussion questions, great idea!

message 73: by Gwennie, biblioholic (new) - rated it 5 stars

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 3151 comments I loved that moment when he was talking about her large round arse, lol. And how she was feining outrage.

Have you guys actually started it, again?

Regina (reginar) LOL, no. But as soon as I finish this other time travel book I am reading (but written in 1979!), I plan on starting OUtlander.

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 3151 comments I'm reading Angelfall, and then I was going to do Magic Bites, but I think I'm going to do Outlander first. All this talk is making me excited again.

Karen (karenbrown) | 2 comments Great idea to do a group re-read. I've read the entire series several times, but am ready to start the year off right with lots of Jamie & Claire! Thanks for setting this up.

message 77: by Dawn (new) - rated it 5 stars

Dawn (dawn_green) | 2 comments I'll join in. I have only read the series once. So I'm ready for a re-read and discussion. Thanks !!

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 3151 comments More joiners! Thanks for signing up.

Naomi | 12 comments I think Jamie really came to life for me after the witch hunt, when he took Claire back to the stones and told her to back. I really saw that he loved her enough to let her go.

message 80: by Gwennie, biblioholic (new) - rated it 5 stars

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 3151 comments That was another really amazing moment too. But even more when she ran back to him... my heart wants to explode with them.

Regina (reginar) Naomi wrote: "I think Jamie really came to life for me after the witch hunt, when he took Claire back to the stones and told her to back. I really saw that he loved her enough to let her go."

Naomi, I agree! I remember thinking -- why is he risking himself like this?

message 82: by Mimi (new) - rated it 5 stars

Mimi Smith | 199 comments I'm joining in, too. I've only read Outlander 2 or 3 times in the past year so I'm due for a re-read.

As to the question, my answer is the wedding and the days they spent together after it. We really learn a lot about Jamie in that time. About his honour, his past, and his innocence in a way. Awww, he's just so sweet and perfect (and mine, in my dreams *sigh*).

Deanna Taylor | 1 comments I'm in. I am so ready for the next book. Maybe this will keep it from feeling like such a long wait!

Ladyhawk | 957 comments I have been both excited and apprehensive about re-reading Outlander. I am sure all of you can imagine why. That is such a great discussion question, "what moment brought Jamie to life for you?"

From your comments its obvious there are so many great moments where Jamie inched his way into our hearts! Diana being a master crafter!

One scene that stays with me in addition to those mentioned above is where she traveled with Jamie and company before knowing his true name. They were in a town and Jamie was pre-occupied with examining one of their horses. Claire calls out to him, "Mr McTavish" and he did not respond. She knew then that was not his real name. But I can just see Jamie, the epitome of innocence in that moment. Claire comments how she did appreciate their friendship then too. Little did she know, the man was already in love with her.

message 85: by Gwennie, biblioholic (new) - rated it 5 stars

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 3151 comments I loved that moment too! And then she called out Jamie and he turned and looked at her.

And knowing that he fell for her so early just added to the reread so much.

Regina (reginar) Yes! Okay, I need to hurry up my current book so I can get back to this gem.

Same here Wendy! I can't wait to reread.

message 88: by Ann (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ann (sleepyguider) | 198 comments Oh Good I needed an excuse to purchase it for my Kindle. Now I have one. Yes I have paperbacks and hardbacks but any excuse to have it with me when I travel is fine by me!
Some times having an unobservant husband is good. He will never realise Its the same book.

Ann (sleepyguider) | 198 comments Yours may mine wont!

Ramona (roy99) | 4 comments I bought the anniversary edition of Outlander, and was considering reading it again. This group re-reading gives me a great excuse. ;) I've read most everyone's posts so far & they all brought back such fond memories of reading this book the first time. Jamie is definitely alive in my mind & their love for one another amazes me.

Everyone have fun reading! On a funny note, my hubby bought me a Nook Color this past Valentine's Day. He complains when I buy books & then when I'm not buying, he asks if I'm using it. After 36 yrs of marriage, I know he just wants me to be happy--I think he's just making husband talk (LOL!). Men who are non-readers like my hubby really don't get "book lover readers." I just finished a book with about 600 pages & he laughed & said he'd probably never read that many pages in a year.

Dawn (delta108) | 63 comments I'm ready. I dug out my book yesterday!

message 93: by Mary (new) - rated it 5 stars

Mary (mary_mac) Hi everyone! Besides the part where he was trembling on their wedding night (swoon!), I think the part when he told Claire that she was "tearin' his guts out" really stands out to me. :)

I just read the book for the first time, and I really want to read it again right away - that's how much I loved it.

message 94: by Carren (new)

Carren Kay | 953 comments For me, it was the moment when Jamie told Claire how he got the scars. He opened up to a complete stranger. Talk about trust!

Carol L | 218 comments I may change my answer after actually starting the re-read, but as someone else said, it crept up on me. I remember being outraged for Frank (because we didn't know him well and he seemed such a decent guy) and then I was really touched in the scar scene and the wedding, but the trip to the stones and Claire not going back....I was definately hooked then.

Deena | 175 comments Haha ramona my hubby and i are the exact same way! He doesn't understand how i can read fiction books because they are "fake"...:sigh: nonreaders will just never understand the thrill of reading. I have outlander both in paprrback and kindle i'll be starting soon!!

Deena | 175 comments Oh and to answer the discussion question, for me it was when claire asked jamie if he didnt mind that she wasnt a virgin, and when jamie replied that not if she didnt mind that he was one. He seemed so sweet and innocent and i think thats what claire liked about him so much, that he wasnt vulgar like the others.

message 98: by Gwennie, biblioholic (new) - rated it 5 stars

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 3151 comments Dee, I loved that moment too. He was just so sweet and cute. Another one of my favorite moments.

Mary, I loved that one too. That moment, that fight, when he said she was tearing her guts out is probably one of my most stand out moments too. I think the first time I read Outlander I read it at least twice. My heart bled for him.

Laura P | 114 comments I'm ready to pull out my copy and start rereading; but I may go to the library and borrow the audio version instead. I've heard so many good things about listening to Davina Porter narrate it.
I sped through the books so fast when I first discovered the series last December.... I'm sure I missed a lot of things that will be brought to light in the rereads.

I've actually started reading Outlander again right away (while reading Dragonfly in Amber -is that weird of me?)! I can't help it - I feel like I read through it soooo fast that I missed some of the wonderful details.

Did anyone else feel kind of hollowed out after finishing Outlander???
