Darcy Leech | 7 comments I added my upcoming release, From My Mother, to the book shelf! It is a piece of narrative medicine - a memoir on surviving and thriving in a family ravaged by genetic disease. The book releases March 28th through eLectio Publishing.

Here is the blurb:
From My Mother
Riveting, soulful, and courageously told, From My Mother is a meditation on grief, family, genetic disease and also a deeply personal account of the narrator’s coming-of-age amid medical crisis and tragedy to carry on the lessons from her mother to raise her young son. A story of loss, From My Mother is full of life, a story of beginnings as much as endings, a moving book that transforms suffering into art and inspiration. Darcy Leech was born to Jo Lyn Bartz, a mother who carried myotonic muscular dystrophy, a disease 1 in 8500 suffer from. Jo Lyn’s son, Dustin Ryan Bartz, was born with congenital muscular dystrophy with a high enough frequency of protein repeat mutations that of his 13 years of life, every day defied prior medical knowledge. Leech narrates a moving meditation of the enduring mysteries of what dormant harbingers of genetic disease may lurk within, the surprising possibilities in loss, and the deep resilience of the human spirit as the body weakens.

The narrative highlights the relationship between diseased mother and healthy daughter, revealing Jo Lyn as a woman of strength, a caretaker who quietly marched toward her own degenerative weakness, someone grappling for identity while ostracized by an invisible disease, and a resilient spirit who endured holding the child who inherited her genetic misfortune as he took his last breath. From My Mother is the honest story of finding joy through loss, living fully within limitations, and the universal struggle of grappling for identity against the device of innate genetic code through invested love and personal choice. From My Mother leaves the reader pondering the value of genetic testing, the beauty in a disease easy to accept as genetic fault, and the heart wrenching question of when life should be sustained by machine or ended by choice.

Geza Tatrallyay | 14 comments I have two memoirs, one just being released. The amazon links are:

http://www.amazon.com/The-Expo-Affair...

http://www.amazon.com/Children-Cold-W...

THE EXPO AFFAIR is a narrative memoir of international intrigue and romance that took place in the exotic setting of Expo ?70 in Osaka, Japan. As a host at the Ontario Pavilion, the author was approached by three Czechoslovak hostesses who wanted to defect to Canada. Notables such as former Prime Minister Trudeau, External Affairs Minister Mitchell Sharp and General George Kitching play a role, as do individuals who have since become prominent in Canada as businessmen, artists and ambassadors.

FOR THE CHILDREN is a narrative memoir that tells the story of my family's escape from Hungary and immigration to Canada in 1956. This is a gripping tale of bravery and the will to survive and achieve a better life in a free country, told from the viewpoint of a seven year old. The story is particularly relevant today when immigration everywhere is being viewed as a negative force, and a resurgent post-Communist Russia is causing problems in neighboring countries. It is time to remind ourselves of the struggles of the past, and of how difficult it is for some to attain peace and freedom, and a safe and happy life for their children. The book was conceived as the first in a trilogy of narrative memoirs: all three intended books are true stories of escape attempts I was involved in during the Cold War.

I would be thankful for reviews, likes and tags and would be happy to do the same for others.

Meran | 24 comments Geza, that sounds like a great accomplishment! Being older (63 this year... Which I'm surprised at. My grandma was right. ) I've met so many "immigrants" and just do not get why it's such a bad thing. Yeah, our countries are all filling up... But that's not the immigrants' faults.
We do need to modernize, update our different countries rules for such things... But I'm thinking "easier" not harder. Or maybe "smarter" should do it ....
Humans have spread around the world, looking for better, greener, happier places to live.
Anyone not living in Africa is an immigrant, honestly.

I hope your book (s) do well!

Geza Tatrallyay | 14 comments Many thanks, Meran, for your comments. I totally agree with you that immigration is a good thing: certainly, it is what made the USA and Canada. It is imperative that smarter, more welcoming policies be developed instead of the hateful rhetoric that currently seems to be in vogue.

It's self-published on Amazon Kindle and I talk about when my parents were dating and their marriage and what my childhood was like and as I grew into an adult, It's heartbreaking and shocking at times.

Michele | 12 comments My Kindle Singles memoir, WALK AWAY, was published in July of this year. It's hanging tough in the top ten of three Kindle categories: Singles memoir, Singles page-turning narratives, general Kindle short reads: biographies and memoirs.

https://www.amazon.com/Walk-Away-memo...

The editor's blurb:
Walk Away is the unflinching and inspiring story of how author Michele Leavitt lived through the violence of her adolescence, how that violence haunted her through her escape to college and law school, and how she ultimately came to rise out of it to a place of possibility. It begins with lessons in self-defense from convicted killers, as well as a piece of advice: Do whatever it takes to be the one who walks away. Hard-edged but motivating, this is a story about overcoming the bleakest of obstacles.

Ajay Nair | 5 comments Hello Everyone,

I am thrilled to announce my book Droplets. Released on August 8. Received 3 great reviews already by NetGalley reviewers. Available in all major online stores both paperback and e-version. This is a memoir which will take you through the life of a South Indian boy. His pains and struggles. How he survives the society's expectations to become either an engineer or a doctor. I am not influenced by any writers. This book I drafted in my own vision. Very honest attempt. Many will feel the astonishment how students from South India go through this everyday. Hope you enjoy this attempt of mine and leave some reviews. Thank you for reading this post and support as always.

My memoirs will resonate with people seeking nostalgia with a working-class edge. These spirited stories of a 70s motherless toddler, an 80s class clown and later, a 90s boy about town are energetic and raw. Journey back to the times of our childhood. Enjoy the prompts, the namechecks and shared memories.

Beyond Conscious Self shares two timely and inspiring stories in the life of Author Wanjiru Warama’s journey from a woman who aspired to do great things to a woman who proved to herself that aspiration wasn’t a destination but a journey worth taking.
The stories in this book showcase two pivotal moments in her midlife that not only helped her trust her instincts but helped her press forward even when things turned difficult, especially when self-doubt and fear took hold. By choosing to believe in herself, she discovered who she was, her resilience, and then accepted the help the universe offered.
For her, life is not about what scares you; it’s about embracing the possibilities.

Fran Johnson | 8 comments Hi all. My name is Fran Altheimer Johnson and I have written a book about my mother, “A Life Well Lived, Frannie Sischo Altheimer “. She was very much a woman ahead of her time. She was in high school and very much wanted to be in the state oratory contest. The oratory coach refused to coach her because he said a girl could not win. It had always been won by a boy. She found her own coach and yes, she became not only the first Wausau, WI high school student to win but was the first girl to ever win. It was 1939 and there was a war in Europe. She had an exciting life at Ripon College, Ripon, WI and came to St. Louis for a job. She met my dad and they married in the midst of WWII. They had a rich life with their children, bird dogs and horses. She was a teacher, horse newsletter editor, and she built four houses after her beloved husband died. Her college sweetheart met her at a college reunion
eight years after she became a widow. She had sorrow in her life but it was a life well lived. She was a strong woman, a role model for those young in age or young in heart. It can be found on Amazon.com.

Gary Orleck (garyorleck) | 9 comments I am Gary Orleck and not an author by trade. However, when I had the trip of a lifetime which was so amazing it took 10 years to process. Upon retiring and doing 5 years of research I decided to let the world share this amazing true adventure and decide for themselves.

Well, here is one email from a non-paid reader that warmed my heart.

Travels With Maurice’ is a gem of a book that just sneaks up on you with its greatness. While the title makes you think it’s a travelogue or road trip book (and we’ve all read enough of these), Travels is so much more.

The story begins with a toast in a bar to the news that an old friend has died; you are quickly drawn into the world of Gary Orleck, who did a simple favor for Maurice, a fellow student at Babson College, and then found his life changed in a way that he could have never foreseen. Soon, this son of a tire businessman found himself driving through Europe in the height of the 60s with the son of an Iranian billionaire in a bright red Mustang. Going from a world of limitations and “no’s,” Gary found the doors unlocked, the curtains were drawn back and in the company of the rich, famous artists from exclusive music venues in London, clubs in the south of France with exclusive underground dance rooms, dancing with Bridgette Bardot, dining with the Shah of Iran and in the midst of military tensions during the Cold War.

So ‘Travels with Maurice’ is a travelogue or a road trip book, right?

And that is where the magic of this book lies. The lifelong friendship, the lessons learned, and the change of attitude towards Gary’s life itself make this book an incredible read. While Maurice, as the son of a rich man, could have easily skated through Europe and his life on his family’s money, he was incredibly aware of the people around him, their hopes, their dreams and tried to make their interaction with him, however brief, meaningful and memorable. Sure, Travels has its share of women, parties, 60’s music stars, and well, exactly what you might expect from two young American men driving a sports car with a copious amount of money, but the treasure of this book is in the way these two young men changed each other for the better.

The book gives you a choice. You can read it as an incredible, funny, and heartwarming road trip book. You can let yourself be immersed in this world the author, Gary, got to experience once-in-a-lifetime, but you will be doing yourself a disservice. The richness of this personal story will find you savoring every page, from the toast that opens it to the story of these two men’s lives long after their time together in Europe.

This is not a simple book. It is an invitation by Gary to the reader to go on a journey with him that isn’t measured in miles driven, but in years of life that he has finally been able to put down on pages that you simply won’t be able to stop turning.
PS- It is on sale on Amazon for $2.99.
Thank you all for being authors and trying to make the world a better place -WITH WORDS.

Kytka- This book has 75-5-Star reviews along with a 4.8 out of 5.0 rating on amazon. I have no agent and my publisher went bankrupt. I sincerely beleive that you would love it but all I ask is you read the reviews and decide foir yourself. It is not what the title infers as it is about Coming of Age, Freindship,Travel, History of the 60's and a Non-Fiction story about 2 total different boys bonded by repect for there opposite worlds . Very Unique for sure and as you read it you will realize that it must be true becausre Nobody could make this story up-NOBODY!
I need an honest and caring agent or publisher and I hope that you could find it in your heart to help me-PLEASE!

Marilyn Boehm (beachmama7) | 82 comments Gary, I'm hoping you take my criticism to be helpful, not cruel. Please read your comments above. There are many misspellings and grammatical errors. My concern is that your memoir itself, if unedited, will be similar. If you're posting a request for honesty, I hope you'll take my words in the manner in which they're offered. In my years on this site, I've read so many memoirs that are published prematurely without good editing. The stories, sometimes really good, get lost as a result.

You might not associate haiku poetry with Switzerland, renowned for its You might not associate haiku poetry with Switzerland, renowned for its luxury watches and chocolatiers. A landlocked destination for skiers and spa visitors, it lies in the heart of Europe.

From the Swiss Alps to the Jura mountains via a network of green corridors, the impressive peaks and stunning lakes play host to a biodiverse population of wildlife. Wild lynx and resident wolves roam freely in the forests, protected by laws, that cover 32% of the country and also provide a home for rare flora and fauna.

Such an abundance of nature cannot help but inspire poetic notions.

This collection of haiku and senryu poetry spans a decade and reflects scenes I have witnessed. It tracks my progress, learning as I go.

This book is not so much a “How To” but more a “How I”. I have studied the rules pertaining to short form poetry, but I tend to view them as guidelines only. Some I comply with, others I ignore. Poetry comes first.

I am sharing these whimsical wonders with you to entertain and delight. Be they ordinary or remarkable, they are all special in their simplicity. Read them slowly to savour the essence
