November Specials
November has several CELEBRATIONS for many different cultures. In the US there is Thanksgiving where the celebration revolves around FOOD. One of the symbols of Thanksgiving is the Cornucopia (horn of plenty). In my neck of the woods people celebrate the opening of the ski slopes, and most Northern locals start to get some snow thus beginning WINTER SPORTS AND ACTIVTIES. All Saints day is also celebrated in November with lots of SPIRITUAL REFERENCES. In Mexico they celebrate Day of the Dead, where a common practice is to decorate graves of loved ones with ORANGE Mexican marigolds.
Remember to think outside the box and have fun!

The letter of the month is up! The story behind the letter:
So, I thought I had a fool proof plan to pick the letter of the month, in a way that I had no influence over so I could play too. I have a two year old so we often watch Sesame Street. My brilliant plan was to let the Sesame Street letter of the day be our letter of the month. Of course those furry little monsters threw me for a loop when the letter of the day today was actually "Q". Since "Q" is one of those tricky letters scattergories doesn't use I just moved on down the line to the next letter "R".
"R" seems like a good easy letter to start out our game! Yay!
Remember, it is not about how much you can read, but the little details within what you are already reading!
Have fun everyone!

Barbara you are almost there, great job with the location of the items. The kicker in the challenge is that all your "items" have to start with the letter "R".

Having never playned Scattergories, I'm not sure I understand the rules here. So, if I come across a book with a scene that has the food “rhubarb” in it and the title of the book starts with “R” – it meets the "food" November Special category?
Lisa Kay wrote: "Having never playned Scattergories, I'm not sure I understand the rules here. The tittle of the book does not have to start with "R", unless you are trying to get points for #1 which is the tittle.
You can use 12 separate books to get these or if you are lucky you could get them all in one book. Only the actual item you are looking for needs to start with the letter "R".

I don't know how reliable this is but Shelfari.com has a way of searching books by character name. Just add (replace) the desired name after the last forward slash /. Since the whole link may not appear for you, I typed out the names that are there.Examples:

Thanks for the links Lisa Kay! I got you down for the challenge too. :( Too bad Lizz, hopefully next month might work out.
Sorry, another question. Are we suppose to have a different book for each one of these, or can we use one book for multiple things?
Lisa Kay wrote: "Sorry, another question. Are we suppose to have a different book for each one of these, or can we use one book for multiple things?"Either way, however you find them. I would recommend trying to find as many as possible in one book. It really doesn't matter though, the point being to get as many as you can by the end of the month. If you can read 12 books in the month great, but most of us don't get that many.

Kristen, the book title needs to start with the letter R, not just a word in the title. You would get points for a second R word if the first word also began with R, but no points for the second word.
Hope that makes sense.
Lisa Kay wrote: "Orange: When asked to describe Florence, Alexia replies, "Orange."Later, the Templars also give her an orange dress to wear. Blameless, by Gail Carriger (Adobe Digital)."
Lisa Kay, is there an R word that is orange? I see Dress & Florence, noted but not an R word.

That is what I was missing. To get points it has to be an "R" word and orange. Orange Ruffles works. I will update your points.
I got all excited yesterday when a character in one of my books was driving an orange car......unfortunately, it was a VW Bug. Couldn't find any way to turn that into an R word.
Cindy, I know I have gotten excited a few times while reading, only to figure out I can't make it fit.
It never said that......unfortunately.Would a coral colored dress made specifically for a ritual work for orange?

Well, I can see how a winter sport that starts with an "R" would be difficult. This is what I found on Wikipedia:Ringette
snow rugby
Recreational Snowmobiling
But then, I thought about it and you really could put "recreational" before any winter sport...

Ritual coral dress works for me.

Way to think outside the box Lisa Kay.
I used an athlete with an R name, or you could use any equipment, something related to the sport, not just the sport itself.

Scattergories is one of my favorite games to play, and reading one of my favorite pastimes, so I’ve combined the two.
The general rules of Scattergories are you are given a list of categories and a time limit. Then the letter dice is rolled and you have to come up with something that matches your letter and the category.
This “Challenge” works in conjunction with the other challenges you may participate in this month. You may use a book to fulfill multiple items (you don't have to read 12 books this month...don't worry!) While you are fulfilling the requirements of your other challenges, be on the lookout for the following items (they may be on the cover or mentioned in the book):
The Challenge: I will post a list of 12 categories, 6 general relating to any book, and 6 specific to that month. On the last day of the month before, I will post the letter of the month. You can start reading on the 1st. The goal is to get as many points as possible by the end of the month.
Duration: November 1st to November 30th
Rules
1.Any genre of books will work
2.Ebooks and audio count
3.You can read in any order
4.Rereads are ok but if you really reread the book
Points: You get one point for each category you can tie to a book. You get double points for each time the letter of the month is used to begin a word (ex. for author if the letter was C, Cassandra Claire would be 2 points). We will not be deducting points for duplicate answers like the original game version does.
Special categories are open for interpretation. As long as it is mentioned in the book and you can justify how it fits, it will work.
When you find one of the items list the Book Title and Author (or link the cover), date it, and specify where the item is found within the book.
Just like the regular game we will not use the letters Q, U, V, X, Y and Z.
Let me know if you have any questions.
