Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments Morning all,

Try :

GoodReads Group Store on Amazon

I'm not quite sure where this is going so any suggestions welcome.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Oh I like that it's a one-stop shop for our active authors' books...

I think I would have called them 'active authors' rather than 'regular'.

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments Changed to Active...

See, you are getting the idea now.....

I was pondering on a 'new releases by group members' section too ?

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments I might put a bargain section there too. I like to find cheap CDs etc and occasionally put a link in the 'Last Tune' section but there are loads of Amazon bargains which don't last long.....

I suppose it all depends on if our members can be bothered to go there and have a look!

message 5: by Anita (new)

Anita | 3313 comments I think it's a great idea Simon, it makes it better for people like me to find the books easily & if you can get a bit of commission so much the better.
Stop putting yourself down Simon, you have great ideas & just look how many people have so much pleasure from what was your idea in the first place.
It would be really good to have a bargain section for whatever Amazon sells. We all love a bargain!!

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments I need to check the voucher thing. I put the wrong ones up earlier....

OK, I can't direct link to the vouchers but once you have clicked through the store you can use existing vouchers and buy them as normal.

message 7: by [deleted user] (new)

I think that I have already bought some books through goodreads links - will use this page now though.

:0)

Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments Whilst I see the adviantage of limiting it to 50 posts in their own "Meet the authors" section, I feel that making that 50 or more posts in the forum would allow the authors to be rewarded for being more gregarious.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Funny, Geoff. I just thought that myself and popped in to mention it.

message 10: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Yes indeed. Fly-by authors may make a post or two but the ones who make the effort to know and engage with their readers are the ones for me and deserve any reward there is.

message 11: by Simon (Highwayman) (last edited Oct 08, 2011 06:38AM) (new)

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments OK Geoff, I agree. Will do that. It was just much easier to go through the meet the author thread at the time.

Edit: and number of posts into the author thread does indicate an interest in the author and book.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Good point, Simon. However, author posts outside their thread also indicate their interest in our group generally, not just as a potential way to promote.

Not sure of an easy way to check posts outside author threads, though. Total posts are simple to check...

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments The criteria was fairly arbitrary to be honest. It's only purpose was to ensure I didn't seem to be selecting on my preference.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I agree, a criteria is necessary. As the group works so well in sharing ideas, we'll find balance, I'm sure.

Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments Completely agree with that Patti.

message 16: by Mhairi (new)

Mhairi Simpson (mhairisimpson) | 1158 comments What about rewarding authors for both? 50 posts in their author thread and 50 in general? Because each 50 counts for one book in the store, right?

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments Hmmm, I have been working on project 17b all morning. Looking good now but it is still secret ;)

We could change the shop rules but any system has too be really easy. I quite like the bribery option actually.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments PostCardashian wrote: "I like it, though I'm not quite sure I understand it :)"

I'm hoping Simon will give us a proper explanation once he gets his head round it. If it's what I think it is, it could be quite a nice benefit for the whole group.

message 19: by [deleted user] (last edited Oct 10, 2011 01:58AM) (new)

I've bought at least a couple of books through the page - one was Vic's Big Walk but I can't remember what else - I don't always remember to get to the store for that page first. None of the books were ones listed so I'll be interested to find out whether the group still got the commission... :0)

Edit: Just remember that I also bought A Damsel in Distress by PG Wodehouse!

:0)

Darren Humphries (darrenhf) | 6903 comments One question - apart from the link at the top of this thread, how are people supposed to find this store. Is there not a way of putting it on the group menu or at the foot of the page or am I missing something?

Good question Darren - I keep going through this thread, when I remember, but a short cut would be good. Poor Simon - we do keep making our demands!

message 22: by Simon (Highwayman) (last edited Oct 19, 2011 03:59AM) (new)

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments I don't really have a huge amount of control over where I put links unfortunately. All the adverts belong to Goodreads and if you click any amazon adverts on goodreads they get the commission....

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments Patti (P E) wrote: "Which book did you get, Jud? I'm ever so nosy!"

the group read Patti that i cant remember the name of now. Not the callahan one the other one.

I have a dvd to buy from amazon can i do that through our page? I dont really understand it. If i click i want to buy one of the books and then search for something else does that still count towards the group reward?

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments When I bought Killers I clicked on our store link then the amazon logo in there which took me to the usual amazon store page. It seemed to work.

message 25: by Jane (new)

Jane (beetlejane) | 82 comments What a great idea this is, much easier to "find" the books!

message 26: by Philip (sarah) (new)

Philip (sarah) Willis | 4630 comments Can I buy a baby Kindle using the link?

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Yep, you can, Sarah. Just click on our store page then the amazon logo in there. I believe it's on the top right.

message 28: by HJ (new)

HJ Darren wrote: "One question - apart from the link at the top of this thread, how are people supposed to find this store. Is there not a way of putting it on the group menu or at the foot of the page or am I missi..."

I have just added the store page to my Favories bar (Internet Expolorer) and have deleted the Amazon one I had there already. The store page favorite shows up with an Amazon logo on the Favorites bar (so I can still identify it easily), but when I click on it it takes me to the store page. Click through to Amazon and it's just the same as usual, except that a contribution goes to this group. I used to do this for a charity until my PC broke and I lost that link - it's seamless and painless for the user/buyer.

Only wsh I'd spotted this thread before the buying splurge I indulged in last night! Still, it won't be the last one...

Karen Lowe | 1338 comments Well, hve just bought a trolley for storing my scrapbook papers - another attempt at organising my craft life and avoiding doing any writing - so will be interested if this adds to the coffers

message 30: by Philip (sarah) (new)

Philip (sarah) Willis | 4630 comments I will be buying the Kindle as a xmas present for Mum-in-Law next month.I often buy books linked on the 'just finished just started thread' or on the 'Author's thread' will these count or would I have to go through this thread?

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments You'll need to go through the store page amazon link then type in the title I'm afraid, Sarah.

message 32: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine Versini (lorraineversini) | 8438 comments Is it possible to set it as a homepage when you open a new tab? Or is it just sites that are specially designed for that?

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Isn't it just right click on the page and then click set as homepage?

Or does it depend on the OS you're using?

message 34: by Lorraine (last edited Oct 10, 2011 12:24PM) (new)

Lorraine Versini (lorraineversini) | 8438 comments Doesn't seem to work Patti, the only option I have is to bookmark it.

message 35: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments Lorraine on my web page i have a wee arrow beside the house icon (for homepage) if i click on that i get add or change homepage as an option and then you can pick what you want. Think you need to be on the site you want as your homepage to set it though

message 36: by Lorraine (last edited Oct 11, 2011 12:20AM) (new)

Lorraine Versini (lorraineversini) | 8438 comments Thanks Jud, will have a play later. I downloaded some kind of new toolbar back along when I downloaded a dictation programme (even though I did untick the box because I didn't want it) and it's messed everything up with my toolbar. Thanks for the help :)

message 37: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine Versini (lorraineversini) | 8438 comments That's ok Jud, I'll keep it in a "forever open" tab, like the 12 zillion other ones lol !

Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments The home page only works on the first tab open. What browser are you using Lorraine? A number of them allow you to create a toolbar immediately below the menu bar that allows you to store your most popular sites.

If you tell me the browser, I'll give you the instructions to do it.

message 39: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine Versini (lorraineversini) | 8438 comments I use Firefox Geoff... it's ok I learn from my mistakes generally. I forgot once, never gonna forget again !

Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments Lorraine (thread bumper-payment in diamonds only) wrote: "I use Firefox Geoff... it's ok I learn from my mistakes generally. I forgot once, never gonna forget again !"

Don't worry Lorraine, help is at hand. Look at the menu toolbar, choose a space to the right of Help, hover there and right-click. Click on the choice for Bookmark Toolbar. You will now get a new empty toolbar appear, you can now drag internet addresses to it and you'll be able to click on them to take you to your favourite sites.

Any problems, give me a shout.

message 41: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine Versini (lorraineversini) | 8438 comments Thanks Geoff for your help. I do have bookmarks but never think of using them. Anyway there's like a trillion addresses in there lol. I thought there might be a way of setting it up as a "homepage" so that when you open a new tab, instead of having the "new tab" blank screen I could just have the amazon store page right away :)

Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments Lorraine (thread bumper-payment in diamonds only) wrote: "Thanks Geoff for your help. No, you misunderstand me. If you do the above you will get a extra toolbar below the web address, this will be empty. Then all you need to do is go to goodreads, highlight the web address and drag it into the toolbar. It will then create a button you can press to get to Goodreads without going through the bookmarks list.

message 43: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine Versini (lorraineversini) | 8438 comments Oh yes, I've got that Geoff. Sorry I went a bit astray. Got a list of my "regulars". I just want something that would remind me to use the page, that's why a homepage would have been good. My toolbar list is overflowing already !

Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments Lorraine (thread bumper-payment in diamonds only) wrote: "Sorry I'm messing you about Geoff x"

Ah, I see. The only other option is to have multiple home pages. You can do this in Firefox, by just adding them on the Tools, Options page.

No Lorraine, you are not messing me about. It's not a problem and, as Ignite says, I quite enjoy it ;).

The other alternative is to install another browser, like Google Chrome, just for Goodreads, then you'd always know where we are! If you are desperate, you could always use Internet Explorer - sorry, just me being daft.

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments Done Mel.

I would have thought that research into this terrible disease should have gained much higher general knowledge in light of the death of Steve Jobs.

I hope you are right, Geoff, Although it is one of the major cancer killers, it receives little of the funding. And there has been no progress with survival rates in the past 40 years.

message 49: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine Versini (lorraineversini) | 8438 comments Geoff, is Google Chrome easy to use? Is it comparable to firefox (very important: the ability to have half a zillion tabs open at the same time).
If it's as good I might just change... I tried changing the home page link but when I open a new tab the new tab is blank :(

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Ignite wrote: "Don't cancel it yet Simon - I am seriously researching a new laptop and I WILL buy it through our store. It may take a few days to decide - never give a toddler a choice!"

Simon suggested the laptop I bought a couple months ago. It was brilliant. I told him my budget and what I wanted from it and he did the searching for me. I'm really pleased with it.
