Amy | 237 comments My Nephew loves the The Ruins of Gorlan (Ranger's Apprentice, #1) by John Flanagan and I want to get him a book from a series similar and just as good as this series. Does anyone know of one that is suitable for a 12 year old who doesn't want to read anything too scary?

message 1002: by Connie (new)

Connie Hey all, I haven't posted in a while just lurking, but I am looking for a good recommendation. I finished reading The Good Samaritana while ago which isn't a YA, but was a free read with Kindle Prime and the synopsis intrigued me. It is a book that is deeply disturbing and does not have a happy ending but in my opinion a satisfying ending. Sometimes I get tired of the happy endings and want something a bit dark and so I am looking for something along those ends. If anyone has read something like that I would love to try it out. Thanks

Candice (locomonobano) | 78 comments Anyone have a recommendation for a YA book with a title beginning with the letter X? I'm doing a silly alphabet challenge and I can't seem to find one that meets those criteria AND that I can find in time. Thanks!

Melanie | 1911 comments Xenocide is the third book from the Enders Game series. I believe you can Red them out of order. It will be a slower read so if you need to read it fast, it’s probably a non-starter.

Xanth is a fantasy series title. I don’t know if this helps you...

Thank you for the recommendations! I always planned to read the enders series, just never got around to it. Maybe it will work out to start with that one then. I wish Xanth was the title of the first book, that would have been perfect, but oh well. It's the last one and no one else knows what to read so perhaps we'll have to make an exception for this letter.

Janet (justjanet) If you’re making exceptions I’ve heard that Poet X is quite good....I know it’s not the first letter but I’d be tempted to bend the rules so I could read something I’d enjoy. Also you couldn’t pay me enough money to read something by Orson Scott Card.

Jennifer | 456 comments I need a recommendation on a YA book that is out of my normal genre, so nothing fantasy/sci-fi or historical fiction...
Thanks!

How about something by A.S. King? Please Ignore Vera Dietz by A.S. King , Everybody Sees the Ants by A.S. King , and Still Life with Tornado by A.S. King are my favorites by her.

Kdbrand | 353 comments Need a YA rec for a challenge. Nothing sci-fi/fantasy, historical, nor realistic contemporary, please...

message 1010: by Janet (new)

Janet (justjanet) We Were Liars by E. Lockhart

message 1011: by Kdbrand (new)

Kdbrand | 353 comments Thanks, that is a good one. I've already read it, though.

This one is too hard. You’ve pretty much elimnated everything I read. Perhaps something non-fiction?
Chasing Lincoln's Killer or A Child Called "It" or Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul.

I would second The Hate U Give but I think it falls under realistic contemporary :-/

Jennifer | 456 comments I'm contemplating reading Becoming by Michelle Obama since I almost never read non-fiction or biographies. So many of my relatives recommended it, and I heard an excellent interview with Mrs. Obama on NPR where she read an excerpt so... most likely, I think :)

I would highly recommend Becoming. I read it last month and was completely enthralled.

Thanks for the recs! I think that YA nonfiction is a good choice--now to settle on a book.

The Notorious Benedict Arnold: A True Story of Adventure, Heroism & Treachery is a good one!

Niel | 273 comments I haven't been active in this group for so long. Looking for an easy read while in school. Any suggestions? A good adventure would be great

message 1022: by Diane (new)

Diane | 1234 comments Steelheart (The Reckoners, #1) by Brandon Sanderson was a group read we did last month and I thought it was a good easy humoras book with a lot of adventure thrown in. Also I would recommend Red Rising (Red Rising, #1) by Pierce Brown and Six of Crows (Six of Crows, #1) by Leigh Bardugo for alot of intrigue.

I look into those books! Thank You!

message 1024: by Melanie, looking for a partner in crime (new)

Melanie | 1911 comments I agree that Diane's choices are all engaging, adventurous books, but they are also all dystopias.

I you want guaranteed happy endings, I'd recommend this series.
The Ruins of Gorlan (Ranger's Apprentice, #1) by John Flanagan
