Kdbrand | 353 comments You might like The Girl of Fire and Thorns (Fire and Thorns, #1) by Rae Carson or Shadow and Bone (The Grisha, #1) by Leigh Bardugo . Both series gave me that otherworld feeling.

Amber (amberm867) Looking for a recommendation for the New,New,New Seasonal Challenge:

Genre? Anything not contemporary

Mood? Nothing that'll make me cry sad tears (happy tears are OK)

Character? Strong female-driven

Must have happy ending - can be a series as long as the series has a happy ending.

NO love triangles. NO insta-love, but some romance is nice.

Graceling (Graceling Realm, #1) by Kristin Cashore Love love love this book!
Sabriel (Abhorsen, #1) by Garth Nix Seraphina (Seraphina, #1) by Rachel Hartman are also good and would fit your criteria I think

Nevermore is also a trilogy if you feel so inclined to read the next two books ;)

Amber, maybe give Daughter of Smoke & Bone (Daughter of Smoke & Bone, #1) by Laini Taylor a try? The romance isn't quite what I call insta-love, because it gets explained later on-- I'm not an insta-love person either but I adore this book. The writing is stunning.

Brandi (brandireynolds) | 247 comments Second Daughter of Smoke and Bone-one of my fave books.

message 957: by Kdbrand (new)

Kdbrand | 353 comments If you like audiobooks, Daughter of Smoke & Bone (Daughter of Smoke & Bone, #1) by Laini Taylor is absolutely magical in that format!

Amber (amberm867) Jessica wrote: "...I've actually tried to start on the Lunar Chronicles... but I'm never able to get past the first few pages before pushing it to the side. "

I felt the same way about The Lunar Chronicles. I tried to read it, put it down for months and then picked it up again as an audio book and it was SOOO good. Cinder is probably my least favorite of the 4.

I got into the series right before the last one came out and I was so glad I waited because then I didn't have to wait for the last book. I would suggest trying it again, maybe as an audio book if you like those. I think the narration is really good.

As for me, I'm gonna go with Seraphina (Seraphina, #1) by Rachel Hartman simply because it's the only one available right now on my library's ebook system. The others are all checked out.

message 959: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 560 comments Red Rising (Red Rising Trilogy, #1) by Pierce Brown and Shadow and Bone (The Grisha, #1) by Leigh Bardugo are two of my favorite YA books of all time. I hope you'll give them a chance!

The Bone Season (The Bone Season, #1) by Samantha Shannon and Grave Mercy (His Fair Assassin, #1) by Robin LaFevers might also fit your criteria

message 960: by Melanie, looking for a partner in crime (new)

Melanie | 1911 comments I need recommendation for the quarterly challenge. I love fantasy books the best, but I am not really looking to start a new series, so definitely a stand alone.

Some my favorites authors are Terry Pratchett, Brandon Sanderson, and Neil Gaiman, so I've probably already read the book if it is by them. Also after reading All the Bright Places, I need a book with a happy ending please.

message 961: by Diane (new)

Diane | 1234 comments Graceling (Graceling Realm, #1) by Kristin Cashore is one of my favorite YA fantasies. I would highly recomend it. Though there are 3 books in the series it is really like a stand alone because the other two are about different characters in the same world. If you have not read it you should give it a try.

message 962: by Heidi (new)

Heidi I agree with Diane

You should try the Falling Kingdoms series, it truly gets better and better. The first book is Falling Kingdoms (Falling Kingdoms, #1) by Morgan Rhodes . I just finished and I'm getting some ideas of what to read from this thread.

Isamlq | 612 comments Hi guys! I haveno clue where to stick a non book reco because this is most def not a book but simply a random one that I think anyone would enjoy... (hamilton) >https://open.spotify.com/album/1kCHru.......

I envy anyone who gets to see that live. I have listened to it twice. (Btw, the entire soundtrack is great for cardio (by song 21 i was sweating buckets.)

I'm reading the biography it was based on now! Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow

And I LOVEEEE the cast album, I've been listening to it since August and I'm still not tired of it. Lin is a genius.

message 970: by Casey (new)

Casey Anderson | 637 comments I need a recommendation for our reading challenge! I'm not sure what I'm in the mood for. Not exceptionally high on romance. It would be awesome if it had a lesbian main character actually. I have a lot of trouble finding books like that which I end up thinking are good. I'd want something where the main character is a lesbian but that is not the entire point of the book. Usually all i can find are coming out stories, or basically stories with no plot but Hey, there's lesbians.
I know this is a YA group not a GLBT group, but I would love some good YA like that if ya'll have any ideas.

Casey Anderson | 637 comments Jenny wrote: "Have you looked at our GLBT thread? https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/..."

Yes I had, but none of them really jumped out at me. I've read so many bad GLBT books and honestly most of what people put in that thread they either said they didn't really like or hadn't even read. So I'm hesitant.

Was just hoping maybe one would pop up here that was not there.

This is a male gay character but It is awesome how his sexuality is just part of him not what the story is based on.

Half Way Home by Hugh Howey It is a great story and I would recommend it.

message 974: by Casey (new)

Casey Anderson | 637 comments Sounds interesting! I added it. Got some bad reviews by some friends of mine though but I will see if the library has it.

None of Black Iris by Leah Raeder Cam Girl by Leah Raeder are YA but they are all exceptionally well-written. i can say the same for Under the Lights (Daylight Falls, #2) by Dahlia Adler ... would you consider those?

Sister Mischief by Laura Goode was good... as was The Miseducation of Cameron Post by Emily M. Danforth .. both YA.

Indeed it is. I listened to this series and fell in love, agree with the other poster that the writing is STUNNING... couldn't have described it better.

Amy | 237 comments Trying to decide what to read next. I've had Angelfire (Angelfire, #1) by Courtney Allison Moulton on my TRB list for a while but not sure about it now. Does anyone recommend the series?

Also has anyone read The Rook (The Checquy Files, #1) by Daniel O'Malley ?

If we're doing random audio recs... The Martian by Andy Weir and the Half a King (Shattered Sea, #1) by Joe Abercrombie series... the narrators for both were great.

message 995: by Maryjoelisa (new)

Maryjoelisa Hi! I've been listening to Patrick Wolf's Oblivion and now can't stop obsessing about this book which name I don't know. Please, tell me you know this story, it must be YA fiction/dystopia. I've read a few pages of the beginning perhaps and this is all I know about the book:

... a girl is on the roof of her house, on a lookout, with a gun. She lives with her father, they have water, others will soon come for the water...

Does this sound familiar, any ideas? Thanks guys.

Maryjoelisa Yaaass! It is Not A Drop to Drink, that's the book. Thanks Ashley *Hufflepuff Kitten* and Isamlq. I once dismissed the book but now I'm getting and reading the series.

Oh and by the way, the lyrics say:
...Father, where's my gun?
Now that the war has begun...

Relief to my obsession, thanks.
