message 904: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) Alright, I need some recs for my 12 year old.

She just read all three Angelfall and is struggling with moving on. She loved it. The thing is, while there's a love story in it, it's got almost non-stop action too.

In addition, it has a love story and there's kissing and a mild couch scene in it, there isn't actual sex or anything without clothes. Also, very low on cursing. She came across a few 'damn's and that was it.

I'm looking for stories that are kind of similar. High action, love story little to no sexual content and little to no cursing, paranormal. I don't really censor her reading, because she censors herself. But I also don't want to physically put a book in her hand that is too much, hahaha.

message 905: by Ashley Marie (new)

Ashley Marie Normally I would recommend Daughter of Smoke & Bone because it's another awesome angel story, but there's a near-rape scene in book two. Hm. Has she read the Lunar Chronicles?

The Unwind series has minimal swearing from what I remember and not a lot of romance, but tons of action. One of my favorites.

message 906: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) She actually has my copies of Daughter of Smoke & Bone, and book two. I was getting rid of them and she said they were too pretty so she took them. I don't think she's got an interest in them quite yet, which makes me glad because I fear the writing style might be too mature for her...

Unwind is one of my favorites and I've mentioned that one to her too, but she hasn't seemed interested.

I pointed out Lunar Chronicles at the store, but didn't push it too much because I haven't read it and I wasn't sure if it would suit her. Is it about robots?

message 907: by Ashley Marie (last edited Jan 06, 2016 09:39AM) (new)

Ashley Marie Lunar Chronicles is a set of fairytale retellings. The first book is the Cinderella story, and the girl is a cyborg-- she has a robotic hand and foot, but the rest of her is human. It's set in a futuristic Earth and she's a mechanic who catches the eye of the prince, and it goes from there. Book two is Little Red Riding Hood, then Rapunzel in three, then Snow White. I have no mind for mechanics or space (the series also involves a moon colony) but I still really enjoyed it.

message 908: by Diane (last edited Jan 06, 2016 09:42AM) (new)

Diane | 1234 comments I love the Lunar Chronicles. Each book is a retelling of a fairy tale and the first book the main character is an android but it is not about robots. You should read the series - it is awesome. How about Gone I cannot remembersex but it does have a slight romance in it. also Sabriel and Seraphina are awesome but are more fantasy than paranormal.

I recommend The Watcher because it was fast-paced and I read it in 3 days. I'd like to also say Finnikin of the Rock (The Lumatere Chronicles), and Clockwork Angel (The Infernal Devices series), but they do take time to build the complex story -- Maybe those aren't fast-paced enough. The Watcher is not complex world-building but I was really moved by the genuine love story.

And how about The Golden Compass? I thought those were so dark, which falls in line with the darkness of Angelfall. oh wait, no love story.

message 910: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) I have Gone too. Both I and her father have read it, so it's one we toss out on occasion, lol. She doesn't seem interested in that either.

I think I'll get the Lunar Chronicles and try that one. Would you say they're more romantic, or more action, if they lean one way or the other?

She definitely wants something with a love story, lol. She read Clockwork Angel, and loved it. But she stalled out in Clockwork Prince and never picked it back up, which kinda surprised me. She said the second book was too slow.

I have Finnikin of the Rock, Lumatere is one of my FAVs, lol. BUT, there's quite a bit of sex, especially in book two. So I haven't pushed that yet. I will eventually, but not yet.

message 912: by Ashley Marie (new)

Ashley Marie I think they're split equally both ways. I love the couples in each book but the story doesn't stop moving either.

message 913: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) The watcher looks good! Thanks! I'll add that one to my list to show her along with Lunar Chronicles!

Crap, I don't remember sex in book two of Lumatere Chronicles. Now I don't trust myself -- maybe read The Watcher first before she does ;)

message 916: by Ashley Marie (new)

Ashley Marie Also, Wendy, you NEED to read Sunrise. It's such a great ending to that trilogy.

I don't know why I haven't, honestly. I really liked that series a lot. I think my reading list got harder when I began blogging. I think I'll have time this month though, maybe I'll throw it in there.

message 919: by Ashley Marie (new)

Ashley Marie I think it took me the longest between books one and two, because I had Ashfall from the library and then I just went ahead and bought the trilogy and it took ages for them to show up. After that, I zipped through the other two in a week.

message 920: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) I keep throwing it up into a list of series I need to finish but it just gets pushed back.

message 921: by Melanie, looking for a partner in crime (new)

Melanie | 1911 comments Try the books on this link...http://www.litcircles.org/Books/roman...

Also, the heroes Olympus books all have romance and couples as well as the later Percy Jackson books.

message 922: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) Thanks! I have the percy jackson series too, but it's another she doesn't show an interest in. Not HP either.

message 923: by Ashley Marie (new)

Ashley Marie WHAT. Odd. Okay how about the Finishing School series? Etiquette & Espionage

message 924: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) She has the first one. I thought she'd like that too, because she loooves steampunk, lol.

message 925: by Diane (new)

Diane | 1234 comments she is such a cute young lady with those goggles on the hat :)

message 926: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) She's a unique one, that's for sure, lol.

message 927: by Ashley Marie (new)

Ashley Marie Or The Looking Glass Wars if she wants a good Alice in Wonderland retelling. The hat reminded me ;)

message 928: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) I'd not heard of that one before. That looks interesting? Is there any type of love in it?

Angelfall was the first story with a love connection she's read, so she was definitely looking for that. Though she won't read anything straight romance.

message 929: by Ashley Marie (new)

Ashley Marie I don't *think* so, but it's been a good while since I read it.

Jean Valjean (OG 2010) (courfeyrack) | 162 comments Alright ladies, I'm in neeeeeed of some Dystopia fluff. Books I've liked /loved along those lines in the past are as follows:

The Book of Ivy (The Book of Ivy, #1) by Amy Engel Landry Park (Landry Park, #1) by Bethany Hagen A Girl Called Fearless (A Girl Called Fearless, #1) by Catherine Linka The Testing (The Testing, #1) by Joelle Charbonneau These Broken Stars (Starbound, #1) by Amie Kaufman

Whatchu got, girls? I've been working/schooling/adulting a lot lately and I need a sweet, fluffy escape!

message 931: by Isamlq (new)

Isamlq | 612 comments The Bone Season (The Bone Season, #1) by Samantha Shannon The Program (The Program, #1) by Suzanne Young Wool Omnibus (Silo, #1) by Hugh Howey ...

The one I'm on right now is called Zero World by Jason M. Hough , it is all kinds of surprising.

But Let me think on this a bit.

message 932: by Ashley Marie (new)

Ashley Marie dystopia and fluff are completely opposite words in my head, lol. I usually tend toward the grittier dystopias, like Unwind and Ashfall.

Diane | 1234 comments Ashley *Hufflepuff Kitten* wrote: "dystopia and fluff are completely opposite words in my head, lol. I usually tend toward the grittier dystopias, like Unwind and Ashfall."

That is what I am thinking too - What do you mean "fluff"?

message 934: by Diane (new)

Diane | 1234 comments How about Under the Never Sky (Under the Never Sky, #1) by Veronica Rossi The Selection (The Selection, #1) by Kiera Cass or Cinder (The Lunar Chronicles, #1) by Marissa Meyer if you like romance in your dystopia

message 935: by Ashley Marie (new)

Ashley Marie ohhh true, I would definitely second the Lunar Chronicles! I always forget that's considered dystopia ;)

Now that I think about it, I would also toss out Angelfall (Penryn & the End of Days, #1) by Susan Ee and Ink and Bone (The Great Library, #1) by Rachel Caine as recs.

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 302 comments Wendy F wrote: "She has the first one. I thought she'd like that too, because she loooves steampunk, lol.

I think of the Lunar Chronicles as more Sci-Fi.

message 938: by Diane (new)

Diane | 1234 comments So many of these do cross genre's but that is what I like. It is the "fluff" that confuses me :)

message 939: by Kdbrand (last edited Jan 26, 2016 11:45AM) (new)

Kdbrand | 353 comments Maybe Free to Fall by Lauren Miller or Awaken (Awaken, #1) by Katie Kacvinsky ?

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 302 comments Diane wrote: "So many of these do cross genre's but that is what I like. It is the "fluff" that confuses me :)"

I'd assume light or easy reading? Kind of like how I here chic lit called fluff a lot?

Jean Valjean (OG 2010) (courfeyrack) | 162 comments Diane wrote: "That is what I am thinking too - What do you mean "fluff"? "

Haha! So, I've been up to my elbows in medical textbooks, so I just need something light for the moment. I generally equate 'fluff' to a light read that's easy to get into. When I get into this mindset, I like a dystopian world that's still got a tone of seriousness but heavy on the romance with an ever so slightly airy MC. Does that make sense?

I tend to think the same, Shera. I know quite a few people who label it as a dystopia though /shrugs

message 943: by Melanie, looking for a partner in crime (new)

Melanie | 1911 comments try Matched (Matched, #1) by Ally Condie and Red Rising (Red Rising Trilogy, #1) by Pierce Brown

message 944: by Barb (new)

Barb I could use a recommendation for a light, easy read. Maybe like Anna and the French Kiss (I read all three of those already). I also read Just One Day and Just One Year, and really liked those, too. Something stand alone, I've got too many series I'm already juggling. Kind of a beach read for my upcoming venture south.

I usually find most of my books through this forum, but haven't seen anything quite like this lately. Thanks!

Hillary (eledri) | 759 comments Meant to Be by Lauren Morrill Ten Things We Did (and Probably Shouldn't Have) by Sarah Mlynowski I'll Meet You There by Heather Demetrios Past Perfect by Leila Sales Mostly Good Girls by Leila Sales Golden by Jessi Kirby The Summer I Became a Nerd by Leah Rae Miller Dash & Lily's Book of Dares (Dash & Lily, #1) by Rachel Cohn My Life Next Door by Huntley Fitzpatrick On the Fence by Kasie West

And this is just amusing... Better Homes and Hauntings by Molly Harper

I sadly just found I dont read many stand alones...

message 946: by Brandi (new)

Brandi (brandireynolds) | 247 comments One of my fave dystopia series is Under the Never Sky (Under the Never Sky, #1) by Veronica Rossi -in typical dystopia fashion, there are danger/conflict/world ending elements but it also has a pretty swoony romance.

message 947: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Grooms (muse1009) | 100 comments I'd recommend The Summer I Became A Nerd by Leah Rae Miller or possibly Attachments by Rainbow Rowell. I thought both of these were really sweet books. I also realized most of my books read are part of a series, or I'd have more ideas. :)

message 948: by Heidi (last edited Jan 31, 2016 02:36PM) (new)

Heidi I really liked Bittersweet Bittersweet by Sarah Ockler as a stand alone romance and I think you would like it if you liked Anna and the FK. I also liked Amy and Roger's Epic Detour Amy and Roger's Epic Detour by Morgan Matson as a stand alone romance

message 949: by Diane (new)

Diane | 1234 comments Have you tried Red Rising (Red Rising Trilogy, #1) by Pierce Brown I really liked that even better than Red Queen but they are similar in many ways. The Cinder (The Lunar Chronicles, #1) by Marissa Meyer series is good for that also.

message 950: by Ashley Marie (last edited Feb 04, 2016 08:59AM) (new)

If you're a fan of Edgar Allan Poe I heartily suggest Nevermore (Nevermore, #1) by Kelly Creagh , I feel like it's a bit similar to Splintered in that edgy-whimsical way. EDIT: looks like you're already a fan of Nevermore! :)

As far as revolutions, I second the Lunar Chronicles, and you might like An Ember in the Ashes (An Ember in the Ashes, #1) by Sabaa Tahir The Winner's Curse (The Winner's Trilogy, #1) by Marie Rutkoski
