For everyone who is considering posting for the first time, please read the Goodreads guidelines:
http://www.goodreads.com/author/guide...

And then read mine:

We, as members, dont really have an area where we can un-self-consciously throw our own websites or blogs or groups we moderate or whathaveyou on each other guilt-free? So I am making this folder for us - http://www.goodreads.com/topic/group_....

Hopefully this will cut back on the self-promoting spam we've seen in the past.

I define SPAM as:

A thread or post that is created by a new member that calls attention to their book/blog/website/group without having established an active role within the group.

You must be an active member of the group in order to post your stuff here. By active, I mean, take a little time to post some thoughts in the other threads, share your current reads and splurges with us, get involved in the community a bit...Because, frankly, how can you expect us to care enough to check your stuff out if you cant care enough to get to know us?

Please limit yourself to JUST ONE promotional thread. If and when you feel the urge to update or add promotional information, you should do so in your original thread. Do not create a new one.

And just for fair warning--- we do aim to correct rebel behavior.

Nawar (nawaralq) | 199 comments I don't know if I am considered an active member, however I do have a book club group on Goodreads, and we are reading Prozac Nation in November, Prozac Nation by Elizabeth Wurtzel
If anybody wants to join just send me a message or reply to this and I will give you a link to the group. :)

You can also search it up, it's called BooClub.

Thank you for making this thread!

Rowena (rowenacherry) | 52 comments Hi, Lori,

Thank you for this topic. I just did a search of my name, and find I've posted 9 times.

I'm a GoodReads author Rowena Cherry and I have a small GoodReads Q&A group where members and visitors are welcome to ask or opine about my humorous futuristic romances at
http://www.goodreads.com/group/show/2...

My first book in the god-Princes of Tigron trilogy was FORCED MATE. It’s a chess title for a race between the two Kings to make a pawn his Queen.

It's a humorous, futuristic take on the Greek myth Persephone was abducted from earth by the dark god of the Underworld. In my story, the abductor is the god-Prince Tarrant-Arragon from an outer space Empire. He has been watching old James Bond movies (Roger Moore era) as he travels to Earth for tips on how to seduce women.

Insufficient Mating Material gives a happy ending to the the losing "King" from Forced Mate and to an embittered fashionista princess who went to bed (in a gesture of defiance) with the most dangerous and unsuitable male she could pick up, and made a video, never imagining that a shotgun royal wedding would be in her future, or that her big brother, Tarrant-Arragon would shoot her down and maroon her on a tropical island with an angry and emaciated stranger.

Knight's Fork is about a Queen whose life depends upon giving her King an heir. (Very Ann Boleyn!!!) The problem is that she is an alien on his world, and they are genetically incompatible. She cannot fake a pregnancy and adopt, because these hairless aliens don't wear clothes.

She needs a sperm donor! One who doesn't advertise. One who is the soul of discretion. Only one green-eyed god-Prince has the right stuff.

From 'Rhett's point of view, the last thing he wants is to become entangled in any sense of the word with an Imperial Princess who is not only an enemy King's consort, but Tarrant-Arragon's elder sister. He has no desire to play a latter day Prince Paris to her Helen of Troy.

You can find excerpts, reviews, family tree, writing tips, interactive jigsaw puzzles of barechested cover models on my main website www.rowenacherry.com

Joseph (jazzman) If you have a taste for serious (but easy to read)literature in the manner of Hemingway, Faulkner, Carver et al.,please check out my critically acclaimed Half-Past Nowhere.Like most classic short stories,it will not titillate you with the exploits of super heroes, extra terrestrials,or escapist romances(not that there is anything wrong with them.)What it will do, is bring you into the world that most of us inhabit, in a well written ,thoughtful and often moving way.
It isn't necessary to be an English major, but it surely will not hurt.Best.

I just HAVE to Share some GOOD NEWS. . I published my first novel at age 69 and my second novel has recently been published at 75. I'd like to share "For Love of Teddy" with you as it examines a teenager's fight against drug dealers. It's really a must-read for teenagers and parents alike. (Not kidding.) I wrote it to inspire youug people to take a stand against drugs. If you'd like to read more about it and order it maybe, please go to my website www.freewebs.com/thedesertwriter and enjoy. You can also read about cassettes and CDs of six of my top songs, and I plan to offer audio books of my novels also. Hope to hear from you (even if you don't buy my book or tapes.)

As Morgan Freeman said in Bruce Almighty 'It's a miracle when teenager says no to drugs'. Inspiring.

message 21: by Joseph (new)

Joseph (jazzman) Hi Petra,
I agree that the war against drugs has probably done more to harm us than has the use of drugs.I'm not into drugs myself, but I think it's pretty obvious that legislating morality is tricky indeed. Whose morality? Prohibition is a good example. All it did is make Al Capone and his cohorts rich.
To paraphrase the great Mark Twain..."My habits work fine for me, but they would probably assasinate you."

message 24: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) There are large no. of industries, everything from growing cotton for uniforms to privately-run prisons that depend on drugs being illegal. Very large numbers of kids, especially in the UK, try all sorts of entertaining substances, most go on to happy and productive lives and its a damn shame that they are criminalised for having fun on a Saturday night.

Still it wasn't long ago that a girl was almost a criminal (and treated like one) for having a baby outside marriage. That's progressed so maybe the attitude towards drugs will.

message 25: by J.A. (new)

J.A. Fulkerson (desertwriter) | 18 comments And there are many, many, many others who kill themselves with this "fun on Sathrday nights" you are talking about. Why anyone would rather jeopardize their life just to be something they are not is beyond me. If I had to risk my life and happiness just to be what some "friends": want me to be instead of being myself and being satisfied with myself, then I must not be a very personable person to begin with.

message 26: by Sherry (new)

Sherry Surely J.a. you understand that drug use and abuse is a little more complex an issue then simple peer pressure? Certainly it can be problematic for many but reducing the issue merely to one of lack of satisfaction in one's self and a need to fit in seems an oversimplification of the issue to me.

message 27: by J.A. (new)

J.A. Fulkerson (desertwriter) | 18 comments I don't entirely disagree with your thoughts. I know that parental guidance, or lack thereof, is a big issue, too. And I don't mean to oversimplify the problem. But still I think that what a young person, in his/her impressionable years, sees going on around him is going to affect what he perceives to be acceptable. And, in effect, that does affect how he tries to fit in with society. Every teenager wants to fit in to some degree and if he has had the right kind of guidance from his parents, he will find a way to do that without resorting to drug use to change himself.
J.A.

message 28: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) Sorry I just don't go along with 'Just Say No' or that because something is illegal and said to be wrong it is. Illegal does not equal immoral. Nor do I think that statistically the more usual drugs of marijuana, cocaine and ecstasy have caused anything like the no. of problems of legal acceptable drugs like alcohol and nicotine. Everyone knows far more casualities of alcohol and caused by alcohol than anything else at all.

I do not think that the government has any right to say what it is acceptable to get out of my head on and what will get me locked up.

I do not like alcohol at all. To be companionable I will drink a white wine spritzer, heavy on the club soda, slice of lemon to cover the alcohol taste, I prefer a nice quiet little smoke and I wish I lived back in the UK where it is decriminalised as it is in some of the US.

message 29: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) J.A. I can't think of a single person every who has 'jeopardized their life' because they had a joint. Rather large numbers of people, kids and adults go further than jeopardizing their lives on alcohol, they kill and are killed every night of the year because of this drug. You honestly think that marijuana is more dangerous than alcohol?

message 30: by J.A. (new)

J.A. Fulkerson (desertwriter) | 18 comments Marijuana is not the only drug being used and abused. There are countless drugs out there. And, like alcohol, it isn't "just one" and that's all. Drugs are adictive (this is proven countless ways) and "just one" does not exist.

message 31: by J.A. (new)

J.A. Fulkerson (desertwriter) | 18 comments If you can't think of a single person who has jeopardized his life using marijuana, then you must not have seen someone who threw up every single morning, hacking until his insides seemed to be coming out, and who looked like he was off in another world. And that's the "harmless" joint you see no harm in?
J.A.

message 32: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) I've never seen any weed heads throwing up just because they smoked marijuana. I've smoked occasssionally in college and have never felt like what you described. The only thing I can think of that would produce feelings of nausua (sp?) or induce vomitting was if the marijuana contained other unknown substances or if it was mixed with alcohol. Sometimes people wouldn't realize how much they had been drinking if they had combined both drugs.

message 33: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) BTW, congratulations on getting published!

message 34: by J.A. (new)

J.A. Fulkerson (desertwriter) | 18 comments Jackie, you are lucky, then. It's not a pretty thing to see or even hear. Not to mention that it would definitely be very detremental to the person's health over time.

message 35: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) J.A. I know loads of people who have never done any drugs other than marijuana or alcohol. Ok two drugs marijuana AND alcohol. Lots of people smoke marijuana in the Caribbean but don't do anything else partly because the coke freaks are not exactly considered the right company to keep and partly because there aren't many of them anyway.

Its extremely unlikely that people who smoke weed would throw up if its weed alone, since where marijuana is used it is used as an ANTI-NAUSEA drug in chemotherapy.

Marijuana has not been proved to be detrimental at all over time. I guess anything, water included, used to excess is detrimental but moderate use, I don't think so.

I am not at all keen on these blanket pronouncements of doom about drug use just because someone is opposed to it. Sorry, and I really don't mean to be rude, but it does sound like repeating back the annoying Nancy-Reagan type PR releases of the Just Say No times. Well, I said YES! (I may be obnoxious, but my health is fine, I own a couple of businesses and have raised a fine son who is going to college and doesn't drink or do any drugs but through choice not pressure).

message 36: by J.A. (new)

J.A. Fulkerson (desertwriter) | 18 comments All I know about the throwing up is that when the marijuana stopped, so did the throwing up. I know that it is used for medical purposes in some cases, but I am not familiar with just what medical purposes it is used for.

message 37: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) I am familiar with it for medicinal purposes as I had a friend dying from pancreatic cancer where it was legal.

Still, if marijuana is illegal there is always a doctor willing and able to prescribe one of the many other mood-altering drugs television advertising repeatedly says you should ask your doctor for. They are not only legal but socially acceptable (and expensive).

Vincent Lowry (vlowry) | 134 comments Yikes... I just saw this folder when I posted to the folder below for promotional stuff. It looks like I should have done this one instead! (I've left comments on other topics so I don't get into trouble!)

My name is Vincent Lowry and I'm the author of a new book entitled Constellation Chronicles: The Lost Civilization of Aries. The novel was published in December '08, and I wrote it as part of a larger series that I hope to continue for a few years. I think members in this group will enjoy CC because I've already had positive feedback from several non-biased readers from other social networking sites.

I've pasted the synopsis below (from the back cover), as well as a link to the website, where you can read excerpts of the book.

I hope you'll join the quest!

Happy holidays and have a wonderful new year!

Sincerely,
-Vince

Back cover synopsis:
A blinding fireball rips across the night sky and slams into a field in the remote town of Rigel, New Mexico. Glenn Sawyer, a broke and disillusioned 18-year-old, witnesses and investigates the crash, finding a surreal craft and an even stranger monkey-like creature named Paako, who secretly follows him home and stirs trouble. As Glenn captures Paako and attempts to return her to the crash site, he discovers unexpected company, and learns that his remarkable journey—filled with adventure, evil, and cast of captivating characters—has only just begun.

message 43: by M.G. (new)

M.G. Hardie | 28 comments Now back to what we came here for.
I am MG Hardie author of EveryDay Life. EveryDay Life is book about urban Life, in particular, how black people interact, view and see the world around them. EveryDay Life simply begins in an Anywhere Ghetto in America and a few African-American friends. EveryDay Life takes the reader on a nostalgic romp through the 90’s in a fluid dual structure of comedy and melodrama. EveryDay Life is singular from the way it is formatted and subject matter of the book to the unique character names in the book. This book does not veer away from stereo-types yet it reveals how real people truly behave. EveryDay Life is a contradiction, a break of literary tradition. This broad comedy in which all of the characters take a hard look at their lives and wrestle with issues of commitment, jealousy, politics and religion and does so within a Hip-Hop backdrop.

EveryDay Life delves into almost too many loaded issues to name. EveryDay Life communicates my many unique experiences through words. The plot twist is more than just the decision the main character “L” makes at the end it is the unexpected honesty and the temerity that it is presented. This American Drama is refreshingly devoid of Political Correctness. This is the tale of “L” against all odds coming to terms with changing his life for the better, but even more it is the struggle surrounding that decision as well as the people in L’s life.

EveryDay Life simply put is different and if you read the reviews you'll see why everyone must read EveryDay Life. I am a GR author so check it out.

Joseph (jazzman) My new book, Love Songs in Minor Keys will officially come out on April 21. It should be available on Amazon.com ,Barnes and Noble etc. shortly thereafter.
In music, major keys are familiar. We're used to them . Minor chords are different. They're dark. sometimes discordant. Hence the title. Half of the the stories are fairly bright but always bittersweet. The rest are darker;not so comfortable, but never offensive.
The longest story, "The Widows Tale," is forty pages long and is set in a 1950's impoverished southern Italian village. The village is so poor, that the only form of entertainment takes place on Saturday evenings when the few remaining villagers gather to hear the Widow tell the story of the night her beautiful young daughter was brutally murdered.
Another,"A Kind Face," is set in an East Detroit bordello and is at turns humorous and very moving.
An innocent young girl's meeting with a strange attractive older man on a wildernes trout stream("Far From Home") and a guilt ridden young man and his mother with Alzheimers("The Chosen One")illustrate shades both dark and light.
Perhaps the most moving story is "Comets" which details the struggles of a female teen-aged migrant worker in Georgia ,who struggles not to become pregnant like her sister. Five others round out the collection which has won critical review from literary heavyweights Dr.Anthony Abbott(Harvard) and Dr. David Geherin(Purdue).Dr Abbott is a much published poet and novelist. Dr. Geherin is this years candidate for the Edgar Allan Poe Award for best book of literary Criticism.
Still, it's a very easy book to read,"gracefully written" by an author Dr. Abbott suggests is "one to watch."
It can be ordered a week or so before the official release event in Charlotte of April 21, by contacting CPCC Press.edu.(Key word is CPCC Press)
Thanks.
