Stephen Cheek (goodreadscomstephencheek) | 1 comments Ok. Let's try this. I'm new to the group and to Goodreads. It's taken a while to learn the curve, and I'm still not there yet. Maybe soon I will get it all right. I PROMISE TO PARICIAPATE! Don't send me to some HELL hole...but to help get friends and others to see my work, I have just published Cane and Able, my first novel. It's fiction and not biblical. It is set in the '50's, and it's about a 12 year-old white boy and his black mentor. The black farmhand is teaching him to drive. It explores the love, devotion, and cruelty that existed in those times. The boy learns a lot that summer of 1959 and also a deep family secret. Check it out at http://www.cheekbooks.com.

Thanks for this opportunity to say a few words.

Carol (carol_rzadkiewicz) | 2 comments I just wanted to let everyone know that my novel "Separate but Equal" is a quarterfinalist in the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award contest. Below is the link. You can download the first chapter for free then, if you are so inclined and I hope you are, you can write a "nice" review. Please check it out.

In the way of other news, my novel "Objects Are Closer Than They Appear" is now available for download on Kindle at Amazon Books:

Carol (carol_rzadkiewicz) | 2 comments Well, obviously I did not read the rules before I posted my message about my novels, so I guess that means that I will now be eternally assigned to the Spammers Circle in Hell where I will be taunted and harassed for all eternity. Then again, I can think of far worse forms of punishment, for example, being forced to listen to other people's inane cell-phone conversations for all eternity, having to stand in the checkout line at Wal-Mart and thumb through celebrity magazines for all eternity, or, for that matter, having to watch totally mindless so-called reality shows for all eternity. But, the reality is, since I work seven days a week, I do not have time to spend chatting away in discussion forums; and that said, perhaps I should add chatting away in discussion forums to my list of harsh and unusual punishments. :-)

Carol that post was actually quite entertaining.
I'm just a little concerned. If you dont have time to chat on a discussion forum, how did you find time to post a thread about your novel? I dont mean to sound bitchy, (well, ok, maybe a little...)

Just pop in now and again and let us know what you are reading, what your reading habits are.... let us get to know you!

FD... You posted a topic here in the important announcement folder. I deleted it because (1) its not an important announcement.... Those would be MY announcements!! (2) The proper place to have put it would be Promote Your Stuff..... since its for writers, it's considered "Your Stuff".

Please post it again, correctly.

message 61: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (nancybachrach) Thank you, Lori, for this book club and for the chance to announce news to its members. I've been working on a book about my mother (since kindergarten), and it is being published tomorrow, May 4th, by Knopf. My mother was the self-proclaimed "center of the universe," a woman whose medical history read like the chapter headings of a psychiatric manual. When she was 55, she was the victim of a freak boating accident that killed my father and left her in a coma (the doctor at the souped-up seaside hospital wrote in her chart that she was in a "comma"). She was not expected to recover, but my mother has always been full of surprises. For a story of hope, courage and resilience, please take a look at my first chapter, posted on my website (http://www.nancybachrach.com).
Happy reading to all....
Nancy Bachrach

S.C. Cunningham (cunningham) Hi there, am new to the group, am the author of The Penance List - a shocking, tension feuled thriller, with a smattering of blood, sex and humour. Check out opening chapters on www.thepenancelist.com

I worked in the naughty worlds of modelling, rock music, football and horseracing, so have a host of authentic storylines to fill my books with. After 10yrs of slog I have finally published it and there is now talk of adapting it to film. OMG!!

Think 'hannibal lecter' meets 'basic instinct' meets 'sex and the city' with knobs on.

CAUTION: shut the bedroom door and read alone.

message 89: by [deleted user] (new)

Well, as for struggling writers go, I'm not quite there yet. Wrote my first novel very recently and wanted to share it with the world. Unfortunately I'm no Stephen King or late Dostoevsky to have everyone know about me and read every word I type as soon as it hits paper. I do have copies of my novel out on Amazon.com entitled "Civilized Savages in the Mad World" about a lonely man on a path of discovery through modern-day USA. A sociopath with a mid-life crises, you may say. I've had my professor read it and even he had to put it down at times, telling me that it was too intense in some points. Aloneness, nihilism, finding your place on earth can all be seen in the themes of the novel. I would love to hear any feedback on the novel and any review is much appreciated. If you'd like to contact me, you may indeed do so through the following link: http://www.civilizedsavages.com/conta...

I'd love to hear from any readers or just anyone who'd like to talk about books and first publications. Cheers and I'm here on this site to stay for a while. Liking the environment here.

Hi Robert, welcome to the group and the site.. as I see you just joined us both very recently.

I'm a bit confused as to your post, tho. You have placed it in the rules/guidelines thread for how and when to post about your stuff, yet I can't be too sure that you've actually read the rules/guidelines at all.

If you had, you would see that I am asking all new members to actively participate here within the group PRIOR to posting about thier work.

We like to get to know the authors a bit before hearing about their books. If you can't be bothered to get to know us and let us get to know you, and only joined to promote your book, we are going to find it difficult to think you really care about our feedback, and are only looking to serve yourself.

Just a friendly heads-up, to review the rules before you post again. Thanks!

message 91: by [deleted user] (new)

No, I'm actually sorry, you're right and I realized that after posting. I'm currently updating my profile and reviewing a few of my favourite books on here. If you'd like I'll go ahead and remove my previous comment. Glad to be a part of the community though, didn't mean to come off the way I did. Just noticed a few other commentators making reference to their works and thought it would be alright to do the same.

Lynn Grace | 4 comments Ok, I must be in the wrong book club. I thought this was THE NEXT BEST BOOK CLUB. I'm NOT an author and have nothing to hype but the books I read by authors that I come across, not shamelessly hyped by accident in a group that's suppose to be talking about the book they're reading not self promoting. Can anyone tell me how to get to that group? I'm new as of two days ago and I'm apparently lost.

message 100: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie (sbez05) | 556 comments Lynn-

As you may have seen (maybe that's why it's overwhelming?), TNBBC is a biiig group with many different facets. It's primarily a place for book lovers to get together and talk books, yes, but we also talk music, pets, whatever strikes our fancy. And yes, there is a section of the group that is reserved for active members (key words) to promote books or groups that they want us to know about, but it's a small section. It's meant as a service to the members who are here participating in the other threads. Lori (the moderator of this group) has broken the group's page into different sections to make it easy to navigate. If you're mostly looking to share books and get recommendations, I would suggest checking out the "What are you reading?" thread under Me and My Books and then venturing into the "General Book Related Banter" and "Wanna Discuss This Novel?" sections. You can also check out "Group Read Discussions" for discussions on books we've chosen as monthly reads.

Hope that helps! You're not lost, just in the wrong section. :)
