How many books have you bought this year?

積ん読: Maybe this is a deprivation response—like people hording food because they have experienced hunger in their childhood. I remember, as a college student, not reading all of the books I had purchased (I was an English major, and sometimes had 1000 pages a week) but I kept the books and did eventually read them—sometimes decades later. Perhaps, a large to-read stack is like keeping a well-stocked pantry.

I have bought myself five books in 2013, but my friends just gave me as Christmas gifts two more books, real bricks about respectively WW1 and WW2. I am thus fixed for a while, taking account that about 80% of my free time is spent on either writing my novels or searching for background info on the Internet.

Did a lot of really good reading this year, a lot of great books, a lot of newly found great authors.

Very, very few of them did I buy new. About fifteen. Most of the books came from the library, but a growing percentage come from publishers who want me to read and review books. When I am done with those books, I usually pass them on to friends who I think might like them. I keep all the receipts from the library, book sellers and wherever. I mark the receipt when I finish them.
Sadie, how does one use tsundoku in a sentence? It surely describes me, but I wouldn't want to misuse it...

I know my hoarding is at least in part because of a fear of having nothing to read. I know it sounds weird but its true.

Those count, though, don't they?
I mean, I still, "bought" them, even if the price was $0.00...

That sounds like it would make sense to me. I took 2 years of Japanese lessons, but that's not really enough for me to know. I just love the idea that there's a word out there for it.

At 13 hours and 23 minutes into the new year, that's an impressive display of personal restraint.

Even at $0.99 per book, that's $550~.
For $95 I have access to several thousand books in my local library. Probably, hundreds of thousands, but, haven't even tried to count.

I couldn't tell you how many books I bought in 2013, including ebooks it's at least 300.

He would rather, after reading a book, pass it on to someone else to read. Many times he gave me books that way. While I do like to keep books, the ones that he gave to me, I always passed on. If that was his way, I was going to honor it, and him, by doing the same.
He usually tried to find the perfect match among the book he was giving away and the person he was giving it to. He, a couple times, missed that connection with me. If he loved a fantasy book, he would pass it on to me since he knew that I loved science fiction. While he was right on that, I find most fantasy books outside of my realm of interest. I assumed he didn't always get the right connection with others, but, I'd bet that he turned some people on to whatever he was reading/giving. And, I also like to think that he turned some on to reading, as it was a passion of his.
My daughter organized a large, surprise birthday party for me some years ago. This friend gave me The Great Bridge: The Epic Story of the Building of the Brooklyn Bridge by David McCullough. I read it. I loved it. When I finished it I gave it back to him. Unfortunately, he died before I inquired as to how he liked it.

How does Paperbackswap work, basically?

The cost of books is usually $2.58 shipping. If the book is a bestseller most of the time I need to wait but I do not might because I read just for fun and interest. A good book is always a good book. I hope this information help you.

Thanks, Evelyn. It does. Help, that is.

Reg, same here. Sometimes people think being a publisher is great because you get so much free reading material; but I'm jealous when I see all the books you other guys have read! I do find time to read for myself, but not as much as I would like. I read ebooks almost exclusively and bought or downloaded for free probably about 3o in 2o13.
I bought 1 printed book last year: Binchy Maeve I don't recall the name of it because I haven't read it yet!

I've read all but 3 of the purchased books, and am currently reading one of those 3. I don't know how many of the free I've read, but it might be around 34.

I would be interested to know how many the rest of you guys have bought. Lo..."
Bought about six so far got them at the Salvation Army for 50 cents each. Sum good stuff there!
