LOL! That word perfectly explains every member on this site.

Lee I like it :)

I remember, as a college student, not reading all of the books I had purchased (I was an English major, and sometimes had 1000 pages a week) but I kept the books and did eventually read them—sometimes decades later. Perhaps, a large to-read stack is like keeping a well-stocked pantry.

Heath Owen | 3 comments As a writer with a job, I don't have time to read much, but I have purchased and read over 3 series from sic-fi authors with at least 6 books in each series. They've been mostly self published guys, but I love to see different writing styles from non-mainstream writers.

I have bought myself five books in 2013, but my friends just gave me as Christmas gifts two more books, real bricks about respectively WW1 and WW2. I am thus fixed for a while, taking account that about 80% of my free time is spent on either writing my novels or searching for background info on the Internet.

message 107: by Scott (new)

Scott (dodger1379) Read about 150 - bought probably 100 - good news is that there were only two that I didn't finish and only about ten that I didn't like.

Did a lot of really good reading this year, a lot of great books, a lot of newly found great authors.

Julia | 957 comments I will have read about 180 books this year, if things go as they should for the next week plus.

Very, very few of them did I buy new. About fifteen. Most of the books came from the library, but a growing percentage come from publishers who want me to read and review books. When I am done with those books, I usually pass them on to friends who I think might like them. I keep all the receipts from the library, book sellers and wherever. I mark the receipt when I finish them.

Sadie, how does one use tsundoku in a sentence? It surely describes me, but I wouldn't want to misuse it...

I know my hoarding is at least in part because of a fear of having nothing to read. I know it sounds weird but its true.

David Haws | 451 comments 積ん読:I understand that it's a pun on 積んでおく ("to leave piled up," as opposed to "piled up reading"). I wonder if it could be used as a pronoun (like otaku). I've googled around a little and decided that this probably isn't the case. Does anyone know better?

message 111: by Lea (new)

Lea Carter (leacarterwrites) | 29 comments About 24. 23 by Emilie Baker Loring and Starfighters of Adumar. Um, yeah, eclectic taste. :-D

message 112: by Ron (new)

Ron (ronb626) | 156 comments When you count the free ones I've found on Amazon and other sites, it gets to be around 100.

Those count, though, don't they?

I mean, I still, "bought" them, even if the price was $0.00...

That sounds like it would make sense to me. I took 2 years of Japanese lessons, but that's not really enough for me to know. I just love the idea that there's a word out there for it.

message 114: by C.C. (new)

C.C. Ekeke (ccekeke) | 8 comments I'm probably at 50 or so, thanks in part to me finally getting on the Kindle/eBook bandwagon (and an Amazon gift card from a friend). Its deceptively easy to by 5-10 books in a day with those 2.99 or less prices :)

message 115: by Scott (new)

Scott (thekeeblertree) | 210 comments Too many to count or remember. I will just say that the clearance section at Half Price Books gets me every time. "What?! A book on my 'to-read' list for $1? Sign me up ... oh and there's another ... and another ..."

message 116: by A.L. (new)

A.L. Butcher (alb2012) | 76 comments I got book vouchers so I bought about 6 from that plus 3 paperbacks from Amazon. Oh and more Kindle books than I would like to admit.

message 117: by Trike (new)

Trike Zero so far!

At 13 hours and 23 minutes into the new year, that's an impressive display of personal restraint.

message 118: by A.L. (new)

A.L. Butcher (alb2012) | 76 comments You have more restraint than I do:)

Scott (thekeeblertree) | 210 comments Already bought one :/ and going to the bookstore later with a gift card.

message 120: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Xu (kxu65) Starting off for the New Year, I'm going to get Great North Road by Peter F. Hamilton and A Memory of Light in mass paperback the next time I go to the bookstore, which will be sometimes in the next two weeks.

Even at $0.99 per book, that's $550~.

For $95 I have access to several thousand books in my local library. Probably, hundreds of thousands, but, haven't even tried to count.

William Eck (williameck) | 8 comments I've bought at least ten books already in 2014, and it's only January 16th.

I couldn't tell you how many books I bought in 2013, including ebooks it's at least 300.

message 124: by Ron (last edited Jan 16, 2014 01:47PM) (new)

Ron (ronb626) | 156 comments Had a good friend who just didn't see the value in owning books. He was an avid reader. In fact, he devoured books. He just didn't own any. Or, very little.

He would rather, after reading a book, pass it on to someone else to read. Many times he gave me books that way. While I do like to keep books, the ones that he gave to me, I always passed on. If that was his way, I was going to honor it, and him, by doing the same.

He usually tried to find the perfect match among the book he was giving away and the person he was giving it to. He, a couple times, missed that connection with me. If he loved a fantasy book, he would pass it on to me since he knew that I loved science fiction. While he was right on that, I find most fantasy books outside of my realm of interest. I assumed he didn't always get the right connection with others, but, I'd bet that he turned some people on to whatever he was reading/giving. And, I also like to think that he turned some on to reading, as it was a passion of his.

My daughter organized a large, surprise birthday party for me some years ago. This friend gave me The Great Bridge: The Epic Story of the Building of the Brooklyn Bridge by David McCullough. I read it. I loved it. When I finished it I gave it back to him. Unfortunately, he died before I inquired as to how he liked it.

How does Paperbackswap work, basically?

message 127: by Art (new)

Art (artfink02) | 151 comments Since January 1, 2014?

15 - 10 used, 5 new

message 128: by Evelyn (new)

Evelyn | 6 comments I have a list of books I want to read and there is a waiting list for some of them. When the book becomes available Paperback send me an email asking me if I want the book if I have enough credits (points-money) and I received the book a few days later on the mail.
The cost of books is usually $2.58 shipping. If the book is a bestseller most of the time I need to wait but I do not might because I read just for fun and interest. A good book is always a good book. I hope this information help you.

Greg Strandberg (gregstrandberg) | 0 comments Maybe 3 eBooks and a couple freebies if those count, although I never read them.

message 130: by Brave (new)

Brave (bravereads) To be fair, this is my birthday month, so I do more book-buying in January than I do most of the rest of the year, but in 2014 alone I have gotten ~32 books (most marked down or used, etc. but still!).

Reg Davey (regdavey) | 9 comments Only bought a couple so far this year for the Kindle, but I'll probably pick some up here and there throughout the year. Being a publisher, I spend a lot of time reading people's stuff sent to me, so I don't have a massive time to read for myself - but I do manage it.

A.L. Butcher (alb2012) | 76 comments Well there are 6 new ones next to me, plus at least 4 more. Not sure Kindle-wise I just bought one a moment ago but I tend not to keep track of those. Explains why I have so many.

Reg, same here. Sometimes people think being a publisher is great because you get so much free reading material; but I'm jealous when I see all the books you other guys have read! I do find time to read for myself, but not as much as I would like. I read ebooks almost exclusively and bought or downloaded for free probably about 3o in 2o13.

I bought 1 printed book last year: Binchy Maeve I don't recall the name of it because I haven't read it yet!

message 139: by MK (new)

MK (wisny) | 480 comments I think the fact that every time I see this thread I refuse to fess up to a number, might be an indication that I buy too many books!! ;-)

message 140: by Julia (new)

Julia | 957 comments I bought three at a Barnes & Noble brick & mortar store last month & ordered three more from SFBC last week. I've read one of them. I'm working to read more of the books I own, this year...

message 141: by Lexxi Kitty (new)

Lexxi Kitty (lexxikitty) | 141 comments Since the beginning of this year I have purchased 24 books, and legally acquired for free, 152 books.

I've read all but 3 of the purchased books, and am currently reading one of those 3. I don't know how many of the free I've read, but it might be around 34.

Bought about six so far got them at the Salvation Army for 50 cents each. Sum good stuff there!
One would think that such a place would censer certain books but surprisingly they don't! No porn though at least not till I donate sum. Though they have lots of Bibles and I don't know how many of them have read "The song of Solomon" cause it gave me a hard on.. Somebody call somebody!!
