Wow, I had no idea that Jumanji was a book before it was a film! Thanks Patrick. Percy the Park keeper books were big favourites with my Y1 class, and Guess How Much I Love You is a lovely book, and like Can't You Sleep, Little Bear? is wonderful since the loving adult in the book is male.

Asif (asifhussain) | 15 comments Scallywags Blow Their Top

Hello

My first book is called 'Scallywags Blow Their Top' by David Melling.

I enjoyed this book as it had very nice pictures, was funny and also had a good lesson in it.

In this story some animals are preparing for a show, however, the wolves who are part of the group start misbehaving and are eventually asked to leave.

They go off on their own and find a young sheep who wants to play. They start to play with the sheep but soon discover that the sheep is bossy and has a bad temper.

The wolves eventually escape from the sheep and ask to rejoin the show. This time they behave well as they have learnt from interacting with the sheep who had bad behaviour. All ends well (apart from the sheep finds the wolves again at the end!).

I think this would be a nice story to read out to the class as a whole followed by a brief discussion about what the children have learnt about from the story.

Their could be some discussion with the children about the effects of bad behaviour and bad tempers, also asking the children to relate any incidents when they came across bad behaviour and bad tempers and what affect this had on the situation. Also ways in which such behaviour could be improved on etc..

I think the age group for this book is about 6-7 (I think!), the langauge is fairly simply and flows easily. There are a few larger words which could be used as a way of expanding vocabulary.

This book can be enjoyed alone or by reading out to the class as a whole.

Sorry I'm not sure how to do the link, mine seems to be written on this page,

Could you advise how it's done?

Thanks
Asif

Sara Darr | 22 comments Hi Asif,

When you access your page, click on 'See Review' and copy and paste the link from the top of your page on here.

Hope that helps :)

Asif (asifhussain) | 15 comments Thanks Sara

I'll try that for my next one.

I thought it might have just happened automatically, more work needed on my ICT I think.

Cheers :)

Thanks Sara, glad you worked it out, Asif! Interesting review. Kayleigh, Diary of a Wimpy Kid is one of the most popular books around for upper KS2 children; it would be a great stimulus to writing to use it in the classroom! Harriet the Spy is another great book about the dangers of diary keeping!

Great reviews, thanks! Adam, I think Stig is a great book to read while doing any Science topic work on properties of materials. It's a great book. If you liked it, you might enjoy The Borrowers. I love the Lemony Snicket books; they're great fun. I recently read The Mysterious Howling (The Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place #1) which reminded me of it a lot.

We're Going on a Bear Hunt is such a fantastic book, great for the differentiating of sounds we've been talking about in early phonics! Great that you both enjoyed it so much, Liam and Patrick.

Great reviews, everyone. A Squash and a Squeeze is a wonderful book to read with children. It's a culumative tale, so great for sequencing and for drama. Gemma, I love Harry Potter; he encouraged a lot of KS2 children, particularly boys, to read. I recently read The Dragon Whisperer, which I think is a wonderful book that could be another Harry Potter. Have you read Wolf Brother? It's amazing.

Great reviews, everyone. Aliya, I used Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone with a Y5 class where I had a number of very reluctant readers, and they lovd it. Not only that, but they went on to read other fantasy books such as The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe and Over Sea, Under Stone and sequels. It's Okay to Be Different and Equality in Action: A Way Forward with Persona Dolls look like great resources. Liam, The Tiger Who Came to Tea is a classic.
