Great reviews, everyone. That edition of The Elves and the Shoemaker looks fantastic, Patrick. Ugo, I won't hear a word against John Burningham! I'm going to an event with him and Philip Pullman next month, and will be bringing my copy of Come Away from the Water, Shirley for him to sign.

Great reviews, everyone! Aliya, we'll be looking at poetry next week, and it's interesting that altough we as adults tend to think of poetry as boring or difficult, children really enjoy it- they like rhythmn and rhyme, and don't have our preconceptions. Sara and Kayleigh, great reviews of historical fiction: it's a wonderful way to create empathy and understanding of why people in the past acted as they did.

Great reviews, everyone. Romaine, if you liked Runemarks I'd recommend Katherine Langrish's Troll books. They're published in one volume as West of the Moon. Katie, you're right; death shouldn't be shied away from in the classroom (it comes into RE, PHSE and Science), but the books must be good. Goodbye, Mog is great for KS1, and Michael Rosen's Sad Book is great for KS2. I've had A Year without Autumn recommended for upper KS2, but I haven't read it yet.

Great reviews, everyone. I love the look of We All Went On Safari: A Counting Journey Through Tanzania. Dick King-Smith is fantastic, Ugo! and Clarice Bean's favourite heroine has her own book now: Ruby Redfort (1) - Look into my eyes

message 136: by Ije (new)

Ije (Ijeuwad) | 11 comments You Can Do It, Sam (Sam Books) You Can Do It, Sam by Amy Hest

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is a book about a bear called Sam who takes cakes to his friends all by himself. Set in Winter time on a street called Plum street, a little bear is excited about the cakes him mum is baking for all their friends and cannnot wait to take them to his friends (which he leaves at the doorstep for surprise). Sam has not done this by himself before and although eager,he was a little apprehensive. With gentle encouragement from his mum, who sat in the car watching, Sam was able to do it. Sam pleased at his sense of achievement and could not wait to do the rest of the houses.

This book is colourful and contains some repetitive texts and will appeal to children in reception and KS1. It could be used to encourage children who are worried about trying something new.

It sounds like a good book to read around Christmas, Ije, or to read as part of RE: doing something kind without looking for a reward.

Great reviews. It is very likely that a child in your class will encounter death in some way during the school year, whether of a family member or friend, or a pet, so enabling children to view death as an inevitable part of life and strategies for coping is very important.
