Jumanji by Chris Van Allsburg

Jumanji is an illustrated short story and fantasy tale, written and illustrated by Chris Van Allsburg. Jumanji is a combination of the words jungle and magic.
When two children, Peter and Judy, are left at home for an evening they find a board game in the park called Jumanji. A note stuck to the box warns to read instructions carefully. Out of curiosity and boredom they decide to take it home with them. When they open the box they see a mildly boring game that turns out to be much more than a game. The instructions warn that to get out of the game they must reach the town of Jumanji. With each roll of the dice unusual things start to happen such as a lion appearing in their house when they land on him in the game. This continues and the children become fearful that they won’t be able to get out of the game. It is finally ended when Judy manages to reach Jumanji. The children return the game to the park and are tucked up in their beds before their parents get home.
This is a brilliant book for children of a wide age range. The brilliant illustrations can help younger children to keep up with the story and advance their reading. The story is also fascinating enough to keep older children interested.
