mark monday (majestic-plural) ironic but true! hipsters like to (secretly) pride themselves on stylish rebellion against square mainstream culture, even if they are essentially a part of it. on the other hand, many gay gents of the castro embrace fairly mainstream soft-liberal values and various mainsream (but california style) activities.

What's the definition of a castro gay?

and who's on first

I love hummus but let's face it: much like pumpkin pie, it looks like something that's come out of a diaper.

That's pretty harsh, Phil."

Yeah? Do you get your hummus from Whole Foods or Trader Joe's?

Hipster.

a gentleman of the gay persuasion who lives and/or seeks his entertainment primarily in the castro district of san francisco. two major subgroupings: the affluent & socially powerful (and, this being san francisco, often politically powerful as well) A-Gay and All The Rest.

message 758: by janine (new)

janine | 7709 comments Thanks, mark. Now the next time I hear of castro gays I will not associate them with Fidel.

message 759: by mark (new)

mark monday (majestic-plural) ha! i didn't think about that reference.

message 760: by Robert (new)

Robert (robertstout) I just updated Wikipedia about Fidel Castro being gay, using this thread as reference.

I vote for grafting.

Remember when we tried to graft Larry, post-apocalypse? Good times.

Also, hummus is delicious.

message 779: by mark (new)

mark monday (majestic-plural) right now at least, i'm fairly happy with Obama. mixed feelings in general, but overall my feelings about him are rather positive.

message 780: by Phil (new)

Phil | 11837 comments Improved international relations, a serious, thoughtful man in the oval office, what's not to like?

message 781: by Robert (new)

Robert (robertstout) Aside from turning the country into welfare state; he's a spineless asshat who got elected on empty charima and vaporous promises.

But, better him than Mccain.

message 782: by Phil (new)

Phil | 11837 comments Turning the country into a welfare state? Seriously?

Facts, please.

Spineless asshat? Ask Mr. Bin Laden about that.

message 783: by Robert (new)

Robert (robertstout) Give me a break that's not bravery he got lucky with Osama, not through any clever politics on his part. How much courage does it take to follow the overwhelming will of the majority, damn near everyone in the world wanted that man dead. He felt inclined to give himself a nice pat on the back about it though and use it as a pathetic shield against his sniveling ass kissing apologetic version of international relations. If I were to "ask Osama" my guess is he'd say the man who actually had the balls to shoot him.

As for welfare state take a look outside my window sometime. Twice as many people looking for a handout instead of a handup while we sink another trillion in dept and he smothers small business with his asshat agenda of government knows best.

message 784: by Robert (new)

Robert (robertstout) Show me evidence to the contrary and Ill dispute it. But until I do all Ive seen is opinions and Ive given mine.

Thanks for your valuable insight BunWat. I'm aware of the difference between assertions and evidence.

message 785: by Phil (new)

Phil | 11837 comments And yet you refuse to give evidence.

Sigh.

message 786: by mark (new)

mark monday (majestic-plural) Robert you are a man with some opinions! i like that.

i can't back this up with facts (although i may do a scan of teh interweb and get back to you), but i've seen/heard/read in a few places that the job market is actually UP since Obama came into office.

and i know this is an old argument... but i still think it is a true one: post-Clinton (who i loathed), it was clearly the republicans who put this country into debt. right? i think that is fairly undisputed. i think. anyway, i don't blame Obama for the mess that was handed over to him.

message 787: by Robert (new)

Robert (robertstout) Phil wrote: "Improved international relations, a serious, thoughtful man in the oval office, what's not to like?"

I was too over awed by your own profound evidence and lack of assertions.

Sighs.

message 789: by Phil (new)

Phil | 11837 comments I was not making assertions or offering opinions. I was asking you to back up your statements with facts.

Oh, wait. I did say "improved international relations" and "a serious, thoughtful man."

It's difficult to find current data, but here's text from a PEW Research article from 2010.

Ratings of America are overwhelmingly favorable in Western Europe. For example, 73% in France and 63% in Germany say they have a favorable view of the U.S. Moreover, ratings of America have improved sharply in Russia (57%), up 13 percentage points since 2009, in China (58%), up 11 points, and in Japan (66%), up 7 points. Opinions are also highly positive in other nations around the world including South Korea (79%), Poland (74%), and Brazil (62%).

You can see their table tracking these numbers from 1999 to 2010. Look at the huge gains from 2007 to 2010..

As for the serious and thoughtful part, simply listening to his thoughts about same-sex marriage or just about any other topic reveal that he is not a knee-jerk kind of guy.

And yours?

Throw a trillion dollars at the economy and Id hope for atleast a marginal improvement, but who cares that our kids have to pay for it. Its the small business sector that's up and the credit goes to private citizens not the O.W.H

Well this IS the controversy thread and it WAS getting a bit Sesame Street, I can handle the flames if it means an interesting heated debate. Ive been close enough to Washington to despise just about every politician and consider myself an Independent because I care more about this country than towing the party line. But what irritates me most in modern politics is this silly aura supporters of Obama wrap him in like hes the second coming while blaming all the bad on his Bush inhertance and forgetting the past few years hes had to live up to this 'hope' promise. Obama is an empty suit.

message 791: by mark (last edited May 16, 2012 04:45PM) (new)

mark monday (majestic-plural) i'm not a knee-jerk Obama supporter and if anything i'm a knee-jerk hates-all-politicians. but i will say that of all the presidents i've been an adult under, Obama is far and away my favorite.

however, i do think he is also rather an empty suit. but not a malicious, demented, completely hypocritical empty suit, which are feelings i've had for other presidents. i also think he's a highly intelligent and genuinely open-minded man, which are qualities i like to have in my various leaders (stuffed shirts & otherwise). and he's done wonders for improving our reputation with other countries.

just about the only politician i can truly endorse is Barbara Lee.

Cheri | 795 comments "The GOP has become an insurgent outlier in American politics. It is ideologically extreme; scornful of compromise; unmoved by conventional understanding of facts, evidence and science; and dismissive of the legitimacy of its political opposition,” they write. “When one party moves this far from the mainstream, it makes it nearly impossible for the political system to deal constructively with the country’s challenges.”

Courtney | 241 comments Obama- do not like or dislike

I think the current ecomomic state of our country is no one Presidents fault. I think it is the fault of many irresponsible government officials, business owners and a general American population that is overall greedy.

I do agree that most people want a handout and not a handup but I also think that is due to the way that people are raised.

I think that everyone should have access to good healthcare and not have to mortgage themselves to get it, however, with the understanding that nothing is FREE.

Obama is just a pawn and I truly think the situation is going to get worse before it gets better.
