Questions for Chapters 16 & 17

30. So, we learn a bit more about Gillian. It was Gillian Etienne and Nicolaa spoke of when they talked of the person with the “N” scar. Now, how vain is that? And just because they rival her in beauty? Are you hoping for her just desserts? Comments.

31. Do you think Sir Roger de Chesnai is 100% on Etienne’s side? Do you think, if he should learn of his treachery, he might be of help to Lady Servanne?

32. Several reveals in the storeroom at the end of Chapter 16. Do you think ultimately Etienne will eliminate Nicolaa, despite suspecting her of telling someone else of their crimes? Do you think Nicolaa will behave herself around Lady Servanne? Will it be her tongue or her talons that slip first? Will Lady Servanne be able to hold her own against her?

33. Do you think the crudity of the environment and inhabitants of Bloodmoor Keep was an accurate depiction medieval times and social mores? Which was the grossest thing for you about Chapter 17?

34. Poor Lady Servanne. She has completely fallen for the Wolf and she’s in the Dragon’s den. Comments.

Questions for 18-19

35. Etinne is a total horndog. Are you extra suspicious that he's so confident Servanne will marry him despite her intentions to go home?

36. I did not ezpect Alaric to show up, posing as a bishop no less! Did you figure out what he was doing when he mentioned the challenge La Seyne set out regarding the pennants and the tourney?

37. Eeeeeeewwwwww. The whole Prince John and the feast made my appetite for dinner flee. Do you think La Seyne will play a bigger role in events to come?

Shelly (shellye77) I have some catching up to do!

Questions for Chapters 12 & 13

22b. I'm impressed with Friar Alaric's skills with a sword. Did you expect him to be good enough to beat the Wolf? Maybe not good enough to beat him, but from some of the conversations he's had, I gleamed he was a tad more well-trained than most friars.

23. And they got their grind on. What did you think of the smut and how it was written? Too purple prose, too long or short, good, bad, indifferent? I don't know if it's because I stopped right before, or if it was the wording, but it felt a little disjointed to me. I know I stopped right after they got to the pool, and before any action, but when I picked it up again, I thought, 'Wait, are they doing it? Did I miss something?' I wouldn't call it purple prose, but a little vague for my tastes. I like 'em smutty!

24. Do you think the Wolf has reason to be worried about Servanne in regards to the Dragon? Yes, because I don't think she'd be able to back down from a challenge, he's right to worry about her giving away too much, even if she doesn't intend to. Everything shows on her face.

25. Looks like they've got company coming. Think everyone will get away? 2 hours is not a lot of time to get away, but I think they are prepared for this!

message 165: by Lina (new)

Lina Ok, things are settling down here, touch wood. Only the bub still sick, but he's eating well and maintaining fluids. I would've made a horrible nurse, everytime there are bodily fluids involved I get sympathetic nausea like the Vince Vaughn character from 4 Christmases. Not been a happy household here lately, but hopefully all back on track. I will catch-up on questions and reading ASAP. Thanks for understanding ladies:-)

message 166: by Shelly (new)

Shelly (shellye77) Questions for Chapters 14-15

26. The Wolf without his weapons? Not good. And do you blame Servanne for feeling hurt at his callous statement that, with luck, she would depart his company? And later, when he was so cruel in front of Etienne, did you know what he was doing? It only proves he was thinking with one head, not both. And I don't blame Servanne for feeling hurt, I would too, but he had to send her back hating him, to keep her safe. It was cruel, but hopefully it'll do the trick.

27. What surprised you more? That Nicolaa donned armor? She slept with Sir Aubrey de Vere? Or that Eduard called Etienne “father”? Ha - that Eduard called Etienne 'father.' Nothing Nicolaa does would surprise me. Poor kid, thinks both of his parents are asshats. I hope in the end he has a good relationship with Lucien.

28. “They rode through the dark mist, and, as if there was not enough grief to contend with, the skies cracked open on a jagged fork of blue-white lightning and after a few moments of thunderous sound without fury, the deluge soaked its way through the overhead branches and began pelting the earth with icy lancets of rain.” Well, there’s the passage with the title of the book. Ms. Canham did this is the other book I read of hers. Quite Hitchcockian of her, no? How do you interpret its meaning? I've only read one other of hers, Across a Moonlit Night, and I'm not sure, but it was probably in there. To be honest, if it wasn't pointed out to me, I may have missed it, although the dark mist might have stood out. I rather like it!

29. Royal intrigue! And, the plot thickens; is it holding your interest? Will Lady Servanne divulge the “trustworthiness” of La Seyne Sur Mer? I like that it's getting more and more intriguing! I love the layers!

Shelly (shellye77) Questions for Chapters 16 & 17

30. So, we learn a bit more about Gillian. It was Gillian Etienne and Nicolaa spoke of when they talked of the person with the “N” scare. Now, how vain is that? And just because they rival her in beauty? Are you hoping for her just desserts? Comments. I knew it! I just knew Gil was angry over more than just the scar, but damn, now that I know it's a 'N' I'd be pissed too! At first, I have to admit to kind of digging the bad-ass Nicolaa, I mean, she's pretty powerful for a woman in her day, and it's gotta be hard to achieve that. But now, not so much. I think she's just straight up whacked.

31. Do you think Sir Roger de Chesnai is 100% on Etienne’s side? Do you think, if he should learn of his treachery, he might be of help to Lady Servanne? I don't know, I'm kinda leery of him, how do you spend that much time with someone and in their company and not feel grossed out. He's suppose to be a knight, right? That whole walk through at Bloodmoor Keep was enough for me to think, 'Dude, really? This is not cool.'

He's gonna waste her the first second he suspects her of thinking about ratting him out. Especially since he's tired of her and her S&M ways and a 'breath of fresh air' has walk-in, Servanne, something else Lucien has had first that Etienne will want now. And Nicolaa? Behave? Never, her tongue will slip and then when Servanne stands up for herself, which I think she will, her talons will show. I predict Etienne will come to Servanne's defense, and then the shit will really hit the fan!

33. Do you think the crudity of the environment and inhabitants of Bloodmoor Keep was an accurate depiction medieval times and social mores? Which was the grossest thing for you about Chapter 17? Accurate or not, DIS-GUST-TING!! Oh, the teeth, blech! The teeth were horrible!!! I wanted to throw up, still want to throw up, but afraid if I do, CaroB will get sick too!

34. Poor Lady Servanne. She has completely fallen for the Wolf and she’s in the Dragon’s den. Comments. Well, that didn't take her long to figure out. I will withhold judgment until I see what she does with this knowledge. Will she be the TSTL idiot, or will she use this time to 'their' advantage? I'm hoping for the latter.

Shelly (shellye77) And I had to look up couvre-feu - which means literally to 'cover the fire.' I'm guessing candle snuffer then? According to wikipedia, it's what curfew derived from. Interesting.

Yes, but it was in this sentence: "There was an ornate couvre-feu made of stained glass to place in front of the heart at nght to reduce the hazard of jumping sparks."

Soooo... I assumed it was a fireplace shielf of some time. But stained glass? Wow. That's dangerous.

message 172: by Shelly (new)

Shelly (shellye77) That's what I thought! A fireplace screen made of glass? It's why I looked it up, but then I thought about it, we have glass votive holders, right? Just seemed dangerous sounding, lol, especially in french!

message 173: by Lisa Kay (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Good call, Shelly!

I found this: couvre-feu
1.The ringing of an evening bell, originally a signal to the inhabitants to cover fires, extinguish lights, and retire to rest, -- instituted by William the Conqueror; also, the bell itself. He begins at curfew, and walks till the first cock. --Shak. The village curfew, as it tolled profound. --Campbell.
2.A utensil for covering the fire. [Obs.] For pans, pots, curfews, counters and the like. --Bacon.

message 174: by Lisa Kay (last edited Sep 17, 2011 10:26PM) (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments So, is it the bell itself, or something to snuff out the fire, or a screen? Interesting.

message 175: by Shelly (new)

Shelly (shellye77) Ah, see I only did some minor digging, and I saw the covering of fires, and bell ringing, but didn't see how the curfew part fit, just assumed it was something someone did at night time. The William the Conqueror part makes it fit!

message 176: by Shelly (new)

Shelly (shellye77) I'm guessing the screen since it says 'placed in front of the hearth.' Better hope no one knocks that puppy over!

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments This is from Wiki:

Couvre-feu utensil shield for putting out fireplace fires.

So... looks like it is both the bell and the snuffer? Maybe? - Maybe the sheild too!

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Lisa Kay Answers Sans’ Questions for 18-19

35. Etienne is a total horn dog. Are you extra suspicious that he's so confident Servanne will marry him despite her intentions to go home?
Either he has something up his sleeve, or he is so egotistical he thinks it is a sure thing.

36. I did not expect Alaric to show up, posing as a bishop no less! Did you figure out what he was doing when he mentioned the challenge La Seyne set out regarding the pennants and the tourney?
Yes, that was a surprise. Interesting backstory, too. I knew he was trying to egg Etienne into preforming in the tourney. But what do you mean by pennants? You mean just the presence of them? They are not in a pattern code or anything right? Never mind. My brain is leaping to conclusions.

37. Eeeeeeewwwwww. The whole Prince John and the feast made my appetite for dinner flee. Do you think La Seyne will play a bigger role in events to come?
I have been thinking for a while that La Seyen is really Black Wolf, but now I wonder if he has his face covered in silk so that the Black Wolf and he can change places.

I have to say I laughed over: Her gown was rendered from a bolt of crimson damask – a very small bolt judging by the tightness of the fit and the amount of flesh left exposed to the hungry stares of the male guests.

Shelly (shellye77) Questions for 18-19

35. Etienne is a total horn dog. Are you extra suspicious that he's so confident Servanne will marry him despite her intentions to go home? Nah, he thinks she's some frail miss who will gladly take up with him for title and protection, he's that arrogant.

36. I did not expect Alaric to show up, posing as a bishop no less! Did you figure out what he was doing when he mentioned the challenge La Seyne set out regarding the pennants and the tourney? Not exactly, but I knew he was up to something! I'm really beginning to like him!

37. Eeeeeeewwwwww. The whole Prince John and the feast made my appetite for dinner flee. Do you think La Seyne will play a bigger role in events to come? Hmm, I think he will play a role definitely, but not sure about a bigger role. I think he will be the distraction he's suppose to be in order for the main event.

message 187: by Shelly (new)

Shelly (shellye77) @ Lisa Kay's answers

35. What do you think he could have up his sleeve?

36. The pennants, the ones Bishop Alaric mentioned as La Seyne's prizes from defeating others, he takes their pennants, and anyone who is worthy enough to beat him wins all the pennants, because if you can beat him, you can beat the others, I'm assuming is what that meant.

37. Hmmm - never occurred to me they could be one and the same, or switch roles! Very interesting theory!

Maybe imprison her? Lock her in the tower? Drug her and force her to wed him. Something along these lines.

message 189: by Shelly (new)

Shelly (shellye77) Hmmm, I guess I just figured he'd expect her to fall in line, and never gave it another thought. But I like the deviousness you see in him, makes me like him more (as in a more well written bad guy)!

Questions for Chapters 16 & 17

30. So, we learn a bit more about Gillian. It was Gillian Etienne and Nicolaa spoke of when they talked of the person with the “N” scare. Now, how vain is that? And just because they rival her in beauty? Are you hoping for her just desserts? Comments.

Hoping praying and making little voodoo dolls to ensure karma comes back on this b*tch.

31. Do you think Sir Roger de Chesnai is 100% on Etienne’s side? Do you think, if he should learn of his treachery, he might be of help to Lady Servanne?
Roger? *has a think* Oh! Servanne's guard from her first husband? I hope he's on her side, but if Servanne's first husband was an accessory, as Lucien implied earlier, he may be more interested in saving his own skin than doing the right thing.

No, no, talons and yes.

33. Do you think the crudity of the environment and inhabitants of Bloodmoor Keep was an accurate depiction medieval times and social mores? Which was the grossest thing for you about Chapter 17?
The entertainment the inhabitants partake out in the open and the filth of the place.

34. Poor Lady Servanne. She has completely fallen for the Wolf and she’s in the Dragon’s den. Comments.
She's a tough little thing, I think she'll be ok.

Questions for 18-19

35. Etienne is a total horn dog. Are you extra suspicious that he's so confident Servanne will marry him despite her intentions to go home?

I'm suspicious. I think he's got something planned.

36. I did not expect Alaric to show up, posing as a bishop no less! Did you figure out what he was doing when he mentioned the challenge La Seyne set out regarding the pennants and the tourney?
At first no, but I was reading pretty late at night so I wasn't at my sharpest.

37. Eeeeeeewwwwww. The whole Prince John and the feast made my appetite for dinner flee. Do you think La Seyne will play a bigger role in events to come?
Next chapter answered that one!

CaroB’s Answers to Lisa Kay’s Questions for Chapters 16 & 17

30. So, we learn a bit more about Gillian. It was Gillian Etienne and Nicolaa spoke of when they talked of the person with the “N” scar. Now, how vain is that? And just because they rival her in beauty? Are you hoping for her just desserts? Comments.
I think Nicolaa should definitely get her just desserts! What a wicked, wicked woman... lol, though she does make the story more interesting with all the scheming and wondering what she’ll do next!

31. Do you think Sir Roger de Chesnai is 100% on Etienne’s side? Do you think, if he should learn of his treachery, he might be of help to Lady Servanne? He seemed decent... but not sure how politics will affect this story going forward.

I don’t think Servanne could hold her own against Nicolaa, not that she lacks the strength, but I think she’s too naive to grasp the treachery involved. I think Nicolaa will probably end up being her own downfall.

33. Do you think the crudity of the environment and inhabitants of Bloodmoor Keep was an accurate depiction medieval times and social mores? Which was the grossest thing for you about Chapter 17? No, I don’t think it was apt. I was a little affronted at the description of the couple going at it in the hall with an audience!!

34. Poor Lady Servanne. She has completely fallen for the Wolf and she’s in the Dragon’s den. Comments. I know! I hope she keeps her wits about her! Is it just me, or is Biddy starting to really annoy anyone else? I don’t think she’s quite so funny now.

35. Etienne is a total horn dog. Are you extra suspicious that he's so confident Servanne will marry him despite her intentions to go home?
I don’t think her intentions will likely affect his plans. He comes across all charming, but he and Nicolaa are snakes!

36. I did not expect Alaric to show up, posing as a bishop no less! Did you figure out what he was doing when he mentioned the challenge La Seyne set out regarding the pennants and the tourney?
Yes, I saw the challenge he so slyly issued. I quite like his character!

37. Eeeeeeewwwwww. The whole Prince John and the feast made my appetite for dinner flee. Do you think La Seyne will play a bigger role in events to come?
LOL, The way these men talk about women! Ugh! And yes, I do *grin*

33. No, I don’t think it was apt. I was a little affronted at the description of the couple going at it in the hall with an audience!!
Could it be said that that was Canham's intent? To show that no matter how pretty and nice Etienne seemed on the outside, he's nowhere near the chivalrous knight he appears to be in court. When he's at home, his environment reflects just how depraved and vile he really is. It makes me wonder what Servanne's reaction would have been if she wasn't already a little suspicious of him from Lucien's warnings.

This is what I thought, especially about that Sir Roger de Chesnai, how could he protect Servanne or be interested in good after being with Etienne for a while and seeing that crap? I agree with you, he's gonna be more interested in saving his own hide.
