18. WTF? Nicolaa has a son and the real Lucien is the father? I knew she was a cold hearted snake, but this is a new low! Do you think Eduard was conceived in love or has Nicolaa always been a b*tch? What do you think Etienne has planned for him?

19. Uh-oh! Etienne and Nicolaa seem to be fraying a bit. Etienne admits he first only wanted her because she was with Lucien, but he did save her from the arrow. Does he really care for her after all these years? Nicolaa is super selfish, but do you think she was about to admit her undying love before she thought better of it? Will they fall on the swords together or do you think they'd sell each other out to save their own hides?

20. I was right! Gil is the sneak! But what a minute! Gil is really Gillian, he is really a she! Did you see that coming? I get the feeling that besides the scar to the face there is more of a reason for Gil wanting to kill Nicolaa. Thoughts?

21. And sort of an afterthought, all this travel the two parties are doing/have done, what do you think it was like to be a servant back then? Can you imagine hauling around large tents, food and a trestle table for crying out loud?

I think the fact that he's Lucien's probably hurts a lot, knowing there's a man out there who doesn't want her, and the kid is a constant reminder. And whatever Etienne has planned, it can't be good, *shudder*

They have been together a long time, so you'd think maybe they actually do care for each other, but I'm gonna guess no, they'd turn on a dime against each other. Especially Nicolaa.

This one took me by total surprise, but I'll admit when it came to reading his/her description, I didn't really pay attention. I think maybe Nicolaa killed her father, or something very sinister like that for Gil to feel the desperate need for revenge.

21. And sort of an afterthought, all this travel the two parties are doing/have done, what do you think it was like to be a servant back then? Can you imagine hauling around large tents, food and a trestle table for crying out loud? When I read about dinner in the large tent with the trestle table, I couldn't think of anything but 'Oh my God those poor servants!' I mean, besides the fact they work for the worst people, they have to haul a trestle table!! Have you ever seen one of those? Poor horses hauling all that stuff, and poor servants having to set it up, take it down, every time they decamp.

Really, WTF! She is one cold b!tch – always has been. Poor Eduard is going to be bait, methinks.

I think she satisfies a need he has, but I don’t think he would sacrifice his goals, let alone his life for her. Yes, she was about to let slip with the “L” word. I say he sells her out, but she’ll find out and try to do it to him b/f he does it to her.

You are so smart, Shelly! Nope, I didn’t; the reveal of Gillian was a total surprise to me; wasn’t expecting that any more than I was expecting Friar to have amorous feelings towards her. I’ve got to get the image of Friar Tuck out of my brain, LOL! I think you are sooooo right; there is more to that story than just the scar.

I know! One thing that bugs me in some medieval stories is that they talk about the 50 knights that travel around. Well, those 50 knights had 50 squires, not to mention the cooks, camp-followers, etc. It was a cavalcade, for the most part. So, I like that MS is bringing that realism to the story. And, to answer your question, I would NOT want to be a servant back then. The UK is always doing recreation shows about everyday life in certain eras, giving a chance for the modern man/woman to participate. I can’t remember the name of one, but it was “set” in the 1800s, and they could NOT keep any contestants in the “scullery” maid position (sh!t flows downhill). God, can you imagine the medieval period? I really wouldn’t have wanted to cover up that privy.

Found this for "bandy":

Yes, I must go back to the description of Gil. **uses Nook search** Oh, “Gil of the Golden Eyes” and Sparrow calls her “lumber hulk” and “hulking bandyscatch” – which I already said I can’t find. “…a clear view of the terrible, ravaging scar that distorted the left side of his face. He too could not boast of an inch of excess flesh, but his was a wiry trimness not thinned by starvation or deprivation.” Killed her father? Hmmmm. Interesting.

I think at the moment, Etienne is unsure what to do, possibly buying himself some more thinking time by having someone collect the ransom amount.

Lina It's getting really interesting! Every so often I'm tempted to keep going, but have enough on my plate that it seems like a good pace to stop at 2. How are you ladies feeling about the pace of this read? Is it dragging or is it working well?

I kind of like it, actually. Gives me time to read other books and I feel like I'm accomplishing something when I keep coming back to it. Doing it as a "buddy read" is really helping too. A LOT!

I was a bit surprised he did; however, it helped banish the “Friar Tuck” image from my mind, LOL!

Wasn’t too “purple” for me and I thought it was well written. Maybe it is not too “purple” for me b/c I started reading romances in the 70s. Surprised it went on as long as it did. However, there was this nice little break where I thought it would end and it didn’t, so that was a nice change of pace from other romance books. But this all leads back to the question as to why she didn’t know she hadn’t been ravished earlier. She wasn’t a true “virgin” and should have known how to look for “evidence.”

24. Do you think the Wolf has reason to be worried about Servanne in regards to the Dragon?
Yup. I think he is!

25. Looks like they've got company coming. Think everyone will get away?
What a place to stop the book! You and I know how to pick those places, don’t we, Sans? LOL! I hope they all get away and that Servanne gets some clothes on.

Sans Catching up on questions!

Questions for Chapters 8 & 9

18. Biddy is a great comedic relief! What did you make of her statement about expecting wanton behavior from "plain women, common women, trulls and whores" as if discretion, control and beauty are interchangeable? Are you enjoying the humor, or is it too tongue-in-cheek? Do you think it makes a good contrast to the darker aspects of this book?

I can't decide if I'm insulted by Biddy's remark or if it's funny. I've been more impressed with the Black Wolf's dry sarcasm than the tongue-in-cheek humor. I don't think the humor is really balancing the darker themes in the book.

19. Have you ever fainted? Is it possible to faint for over an hour? If Servanne had been a virgin, it may have been more understandable for her to have doubts as to whether she'd been violated, but given she's a widow, do you think her doubts are unrealistic? Wouldn't she know what *smirk* "evidence" to look for?
I've passed out from dehydration and being sick or having a fever a couple of times, but not fainted in a feminine swoon. When I was sick, I passed out at my computer and woke up a couple days later in bed. Don't remember anything that happened during that time. Given what her late husband did and how much older he was, I wasn't terribly surprised she had her doubts about having an offering left on her thighs. He may have had troubles sending his little sailors off to conquer her moist grotto. And given the fact she never became pregnant...*shrugs* I can understand it. But sure as sh*t, she should have felt sore when she woke up.

20. Were you surprised by how observant Servanne is proving to be? Not only is she questioning the holes in his story, but also to have come to the conclusions she has of the Black Wolf, proves that she's definitely not TSTL! Why, then, does she not think before she reacts??? BTW, well done on the guess Lisa Kay!! You picked the realtionship between the two Luciens:-)
I do have to give her credit about her observations on the Black Wolf. She's not totally TSTL, but she's still got her moments.

21. I am blown away with how easily Sparrow advises rape. Comments?
That was scary. >_< Very much in keeping with the attitude of the day, but still. Tipped me over from being amused by him to hoping he'd get clocked by Gil a few times.

Nicolaa wouldn't know love if it gave her the smackdown and a nasty case of syphilis. I think Etienne is using Eduard as a substitute for Lucien and takes pleasure in being cruel to him.

No, I don't think he cares for her at all. I think he still has plans for Nicolaa and didn't want those to get jacked up. I think she was going to say she loves Etienne, but it's actually obsession, and they'd sell each other out if it would benefit them.

I didn't see it coming at all. Should have from the prologue though! Gil definitely has more than a scar to pay Nicolaa back for. I'm thinking she probably killed Gil's mom or something. She's tortured and killed servants before!

I keep thinking he's Friar Tuck from the Robin Hood movies. A very large, very jovial and drunk dude. I need to remember that "Robin Hood" isn't an actual character in these books!

It was done really well, IMO. I liked it, it was very different from most of the romance books I've read. I didn't start with the old skools like a lot of readers, so the purple is new to me and I can't really compare it with anything.

26. The Wolf without his weapons? Not good. And do you blame Servanne for feeling hurt at his callous statement that, with luck, she would depart his company? And later, when he was so cruel in front of Etienne, did you know what he was doing?

27. What surprised you more? That Nicolaa donned armor? She slept with Sir Aubrey de Vere? Or that Eduard called Etienne “father”?

Well, there’s the passage with the title of the book. Ms. Canham did this is the other book I read of hers. Quite Hitchcockian of her, no? How do you interpret its meaning?

I understood the necessity, one of those rare times when I can so clearly see both sides of the story and empathise with both. Were I in Servanne’s position, I would’ve lashed out too at the humiliation.

Or that Eduard called Etienne “father”? lol, It wouldn’t surprised me who that woman slept with now, so it was mostly the donning of the armour that surprised me. I wasn’t aware that Eduard thought of Etienne as his father so wasn’t expecting that either.

Well, there’s the passage with the title of the book. Ms. Canham did this is the other book I read of hers. Quite Hitchcockian of her, no? How do you interpret its meaning?
Brilliant question Lisa! I’m assuming it refers to things not being clear, or not being what they seem. This relates at the moment to how the Wolf is representing himself to Servanne, but in the book as a whole, maybe more about the characters having to feel their way safely into a situation because there may be dangers they can’t see clearly… hmmm, I could ponder this for a while…

29. Royal intrigue! And, the plot thickens; is it holding your interest? Will Lady Servanne divulge the “trustworthiness” of La Seyne Sur Mer? I don’t think she’ll divulge. I think she’ll make some of those uncanny observations you don’t expect from her and hold her tongue. I’m interested to know how they get from here to where they were in the prologue and how that scene plays out….

26. The Wolf without his weapons? Not good. And do you blame Servanne for feeling hurt at his callous statement that, with luck, she would depart his company? And later, when he was so cruel in front of Etienne, did you know what he was doing?

I don't blame her but I'm not surprised he was such an asshat. I knew what he was doing, I'm just wondering how long it will take Servanne to figure it out.

That Eduard called Etienne "father". The kid had to know how that was going to end up. :(

It is! I think she's wary enough of everyone at this point to keep herself to herself and not share any details. She doesn't know who to trust anymore and she doesn't strike me as the type to go blabbing to everyone. She'll lash out, but she knows other people's safety is at stake.

#22 – That’s right! OMG! I somehow forgot he was a “gentleman” – I think the Ghost of Friar Tuck was interfering with my image of him at that time, LOL!

#24 – Man-oh-man! You hit the nail on the head about Servanne.

#26 – I was a little hurt and bewildered, along with Servanne, with his sudden coolness at the warm springs. (I’ve said it b/f – I identify too closely with my heroines!) But I totally was clued in to what he was doing when he sent her back to Etienne. Worked too, as I thought it was brutal.

#27 – LOL! You’ve captured Nicolaa’s personality too. I was surprised that Eduard thought Etienne was his father.

#28 – Thank you. :o) It does make me ponder too… like you, the current situation, and the book as a whole. Love the “thunderous sound without fury”. Reminds me of Macbeth's soliloquy, Act 5, Scene 5, by William Shakespeare:

Me too! Love Shakespeare. I felt like the only one in high-school who did. Ah, youth. :o)

I remember when my ex and I watched Much Ado About Nothing and Michael Keaton played Dogberry, the local constable. My ex said he had to be add-libbing. (It was too witty.) I quickly got out my Shakespear and showed him the text. Such fun!

Oh, I just recently watched that Much Ado with Michael Keaton, and was just laughing so hard! It was great!!!
