Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Wow! We are 25% of the way through the book. That is a surprise to me. I thought we were going slow, but the time passes anyway, doesn’t it?

I added the following words to our glossary: seneschal, poniard, and ambuscade. I pretty much knew what the first two meant from the sentences in which they were used; however, I have this on Nook as well as paperback, so why not use the technology? I figured out what “ambuscade” was from its root word, but I have never heard it before - nor seen it used in a sentence; interesting to see its origin.

Lisa Kay’s Questions for Chapters 6 – 7

14. Remembering Misfit’s review, she says Ms. Canham’s tongue is firmly in her cheek. After reading the dialogue so far, do you agree?

15. Did you think for a minute it might be Servanne’s finger?

16. A subjugator! Yikes! D’Aeth sounds like a nasty bit of goods. Bet he is not the Big Fuc#er, though. Who do you think is? Pretty Court Lucian or someone higher up the political evolutionary scale? Or maybe PC Lucian is just the B.F. for THIS book, not the series. Thoughts?

17. Whoa! PC Lucian definitely recognized that dragon ring – and he’s afraid. Think he is a relative of the Black Wolf’s, an ex-best-friend, or just someone he fought alongside?

message 56: by Shelly (new)

Shelly (shellye77) 14 - Yes, but it's why I like her style and really try to like her books! It's not enough though.

15 - No, I already knew Black Wolf was a big softie, and most alarmingly, I wasn't really concerned if it was. Sad, huh?

16 - I must have skimmed this part, it's not ringing any bells.

17 - I just assumed it was a friend, but later found out the truth, which I won't spoil!

Lina CaroB's Answers for Chapters 4 & 5

10. Servanne has shown herself to be young, rash and sheltered, but she is also becoming more curious about her captors. Do you think there are moments where she is TSTL? Do you think her pride will be dangerous? Why do you think The Black Wolf is reluctant to deal with her as harshly as his men expect? I don't know if she's TSTL, but I do find her ignorant idealism is grating on my nerves. IMHO, her pride will endanger nto only herself but the Black Wolf. He's charmed by her spirit and doesnt want to break her, but I do think she needs taking down a peg.

11. What do you make of Sparrow? Is he a teenager or a dwarf or something else? I can't figure this out.

12. It's interesting to see the attraction growing on both sides, but why do think a naked Servanne gave the Black Wolf flashbacks to a young Nicolaa and her treachery? Were you surprised that Nicolaa and the golden Lucien had been lovers for that long? I think he had flashbacks because he's remembering the last time he felt deeply for a woman, and how it turned out. Maybe it's a good omen in a way, a portent of his deepening feelings? I knew there must've been a history from Nicolaa's comment that they should have married when they were younger, but surprised that the two Luciens seem to have a history too. I assumed the golden one was an usurper who showed up after the Black Wolf went off to fight.

13. At the end of chapter 5, do you think the Black Wolf really intends to rape Servanne? I think he's considering the implications it could have, but doubt (hope) he'd really be able to do soemthing like that.

Lina CaroB's answers for Chapters 7 – 8

14. Remembering Misfit’s review, she says Ms. Canham’s tongue is firmly in her cheek. After reading the dialogue so far, do you agree? Definitely and I'm enjoying it. Had a little giggle at Nicolaa's comment “Provide me with a worthy mount,” she said, her eyes raking boldly down the powerful length of his body, “And you will not hear me balking at the thought of a hard day’s ride.”

15. Did you think for a minute it might be Servanne’s finger? Yes, I had to go back and read that bit to see if I'd forgotten about it. I was surprised that it ended up being a man's/guard's finger because it was described as a woman's finger "judging by the size and shape of it". This might sound sexist, but while I know of a few women who don't have dainty hands, I know of no men who do have dainty fingers.... and a guard compared to a lady, even harder to believe.

Thoughts? I think Nicolaaand Lucien both might end up being the B.F for this book. And is it just me, or do you read "death" when you see "D’Aeth"?

17. Whoa! PC Lucian definitely recognized that dragon ring – and he’s afraid. Think he is a relative of the Black Wolf’s, an ex-best-friend, or just someone he fought alongside? I'm guessing cousins...

Lina Shell's Bell's - I was reading through your answer to #11, and it made me think of the Orlando Bloom elf character in The Lord of The Rings movie. All of a sudden, Sparrow just became a LOT more interesting :-)

This is exactly how I see Sparrow! Dwarfs tend to be a little portly and their limbs are not very long, and to swing from the trees as he does, you gotta be agile. Plus, his name is Sparrow, light as a bird? That's immediately what I thought. I also thought a little Peter Pan-ish but that's just because of the green Pan wears, and he can fly!!

#10 – Oh! I like that, “ignorant idealism”. And, whoa!

#11 – Ditto, me neither.

#12 – Ah! You could be right about the deep feelings and the flashbacks. The “usurper” – God, they used that in A Game of Thrones, only it was with a capital “U”. Only problem was, all the opposing families had a Usurper somewhere in the family tree, and called him King.

#13 – So, we are safely out of the bodice ripper period for this publication?

#14 – Yes, the villainess gets the best lines. She must be sleeping with the director. :)

#15 – LOL! Don’t you know what “small fingers” means, CaroB? Or don’t you have any men down-under with small fingers? LOL! **Lisa Kay sends PM to Sans about both of them taking a trip to Australia in the near future**

#13- I think so, but only by a few years. If I have it right, the old school / bodice ripper period ends late 80s and I think this is very early 90s. Or am I wrong?

Lina Questions for Chapters 8 & 9:

18. Biddy is a great comedic relief! What did you make of her statement about expecting wanton behaviour from "plain women, common women, trulls and whores" as if discretion, control and beauty are interachangeable? Are you enjoying the humour, or is it too tongue-in-cheek? Do you think it makes a good contrast to the darker aspects of this book?

19. Have you ever fainted? Is it possible to faint for over an hour? If Servanne had been a virgin, it may have been more understandable for her to have doubts as to wether she'd been violated, but given she's a widow, do you think her doubts are unrealistic? Wouldn't she know what *smirk* "evidence" to look for?

20. Were you surprised by how observant Servanne is proving to be? Not only is she questioning the holes in his story, but also to have come to the conclusions she has of the Black Wolf, proves that she's definitely not TSTL! Why, then, does she not think before she reacts??? BTW, well done on the guess Lisa Kay!! You picked the realtionship between the two Luciens:-)

21. I am blown away with how easily Sparrow advises rape. Comments?

22. Who do you think is the traitor leaving camp?

message 73: by Lina (new)

Lina Words I admit to looking up:
Trulls: a prostitute; strumpet.

Shelly (shellye77) Me too CaroB - I figured it was that, but wasn't sure!

Shelly (shellye77) 18. I really thing this was a bit over done, but I think it's because Biddy wasn't even willing to listen to Servanne. She just assumed the worst. Otherwise, I dig the descriptions and silly banter.

I have fainted, just once, and I was out for 2-3 minutes. It was after donating blood, I ate my cookie and juice and waited 10 minutes, got up slowly, and out I went. As for over an hour, well, maybe it was a combination sleep deprivation and er, modesty? And I'm gonna go out on a limb and say just because Servanne was married, I don't automatically think she's not a virgin. In fact, I suspect she is, her husband was an old man, she may yet be untouched. It's my theory.

20. Were you surpirsed by how observant Servanne is proving to be? Not only is she questioning the holes in his story, but also to have come to the conclusions she has of the Black Wolf, proves that she's definitely not TSTL! Why, then, does she not think before she reacts??? BTW, well done on the guess Lisa Kay!! You picked the realtionship between the two Luciens:-) I thought this was rather convenient she'd notice all this stuff, you don't really read about her thinking about this stuff much, so it seemed a little out of the blue for me. I'm not convinced she's not TSTL, but we shall see. PS - the slap really pissed me off, anyone else?

21. I am blown away with how easily Sparrow advises rape. Comments? I know!!! Here I was really liking my little elfin guy, but not so much after those comments!

22. Who do you think is the traitor leaving camp? I think it's Gil!

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Lisa Kay’s Answers to CaroB’s Questions for Chapters 8 & 9

18. Biddy is a great comedic relief! What did you make of her statement about expecting wanton behavior from "plain women, common women, trulls and whores" as if discretion, control and beauty are interchangeable? Are you enjoying the humor, or is it too tongue-in-cheek? Do you think it makes a good contrast to the darker aspects of this book?
Yes, Biddy is a little over the top, but I’m okay with that. This book is definitely like the old black and white movies of the thirties. I think Ms. Canham is setting us up here. In our fairy-tales (he did remove a “slipper from her foot”), the damsel in distress is always lovely and the prince/knight always noble and handsome. Pretty Court Lucien is “handsome” and Nicolaa the Nymph-o-maniac is supposed to stop an advancing army with her looks; nonetheless, we already know they are evil. Yes, I like the contrast.

19. Have you ever fainted? Is it possible to faint for over an hour? If Servanne had been a virgin, it may have been more understandable for her to have doubts as to whether she'd been violated, but given she's a widow, do you think her doubts are unrealistic? Wouldn't she know what *smirk* "evidence" to look for?
LOL! You are triggering the “nurse in me that finds this ridiculous”. I’ve never heard of a faint lasting for an hour, unless the person was knocked unconscious. We don’t know that she isn’t still a virgin, do we?

**Lisa Kay takes a bow** Thank you! :) I was in a quandary until the ring appeared; then I thought, who would have access to the family ring? Those things were guarded quite carefully and a lot of people couldn’t write and it was used as seals on letters. Actually, I’m surprised he sent it to PC Lucien as that may come back to haunt him that he now has it. Plus, he had to look like him somewhat.

I loved Servanne’s walk and talk around the Black Wolf; I think she is the ancestor of Miss Marple. But it beats the poo out of me as to why she doesn’t. think b/f she acts. I wonder about those other mysteries Black Wolf didn’t reveal to Servanne, but I’m glad he has kept them close to his chest.

21. I am blown away with how easily Sparrow advises rape. Comments?
I was a little surprised by it, but rape was pretty prevalent back then. I think he is right about “persuading” Servanne b/f PC Lucien can do so; or are we calling him Etienne now?

22. Who do you think is the traitor leaving camp?
I haven’t a clue. None whatsoever.

Sans' answers for for Chapters 6 – 7

14. Remembering Misfit’s review, she says Ms. Canham’s tongue is firmly in her cheek. After reading the dialogue so far, do you agree?

Yep. Putting the old skool flamboyancy aside, any author that channels Errol Flynn is definitely poking some fun.

15. Did you think for a minute it might be Servanne’s finger?
No. Her hand was fine and the messenger would have arrived with that finger about the time the Wolf was stripping Servanne after she fainted at the pool.

Thoughts?
Nah, he's just another baddie that's going to get cut down. PC Lucien and Nicolaa are gonna be our Big F*ckers I think.

17. Whoa! PC Lucian definitely recognized that dragon ring – and he’s afraid. Think he is a relative of the Black Wolf’s, an ex-best-friend, or just someone he fought alongside?
I'm thinking cousin or ex-BFF. I just want to know how he fooled everyone into thinking he's the real Lucien, because they look nothing alike. And Nicolaa obviously knew the real Lucien before, but is calling blond bastard dude by that name. My head is spinning.
