Maze Runner was the first dystopia book I read after Hunger Games and I was surprised to like it as much as I did. These books read very gender neutral, and my teen son enjoys them as much as I do.The slang was very offputting at first (klunk, shuckface, etc.) and I almost stopped reading after a few chapters of it, but once the book got to the point where the characters were actually in the maze, I was hooked.
The second book has me wondering who is good and bad now because it seems like characters are getting flipped.
I think it really was the slang that took me out of these books. I was able to finish it and the ending was worth it, but I don't know about reading the next one.
Agh, I got fed up with this book. They dangled a carrot in front of me and I followed, expecting at least a bite in the first book, but felt like I got nothing. I tried the second to see if it was any better, but nope, more of the same. I think I said in my review that I was going to refuse to be frustrated any longer by this series, and that I'd just read the Wikipedia entry in a few years to find out what the actual reasons behind it all was, though I already have a guess. I just didn't want to put up with it any more. No more of this series for me.

Vivian wrote: "I'm so excited for the third book to come out! Only a month left, yay :)"I just now realized that it is very close until the 3rd book comes out. This is one of the only series left that I still own in hardcover, so I suppose I will be purchasing it through Amazon.
Maree, I can sort of understand where you're coming from. The second book sort of did lose some of the magic because they weren't in the maze anymore, and that's part of why I read the first book to begin with. It did feel a little bit like there weren't any answers given to anything in book 2.
The new girl in the second book sort of intrigued me though. At this point I don't know if Teresa is good or bad, so this other person coming in and causing trouble has me confused as to whose intentions are on the honorable side.
I just got a message that the third book is available for me to pick up at the library! I won't have time to read it this weekend, but excited to have it, haven't felt excited about a book in awhile :)
I have heard a lot about this series and I think I will read it for the January group read. Being a group gives me more of a reason to read it.
It is worth the read but I had a hard time getting into the made up slang in the book. It wasn't as bad in the other books in the series and I am currently reading
which is the prequel, and am enjoying it also especially since it takes place before the maze slang.
I am absolutely in love with this series! I'm excited to read through the group read posts :) I notice a lot of people have issues with the book, many of them stated above haha, but I didn't have much trouble with it at all. I agree that the slang was hard to get used to, but the story was fun enough for me not to care :)However I was very disappointed in
. I've been thinking about changing my review from 4 stars to 3 because I was so let down after LOVING the first two books. I really loved the charaters though (Especially Minho and Newt ♥)
I actual like made up slang in books. Like the made up slang in the Seven Realms series was fun. (I try using them in real life)

Jenny wrote: "Minho is awesome! I still need to read The Death Cure and The Kill Order."I'd like to see your thoughts on book 3 hahaha. I need to read the Kill Order as well.
I might have to knock out book 3 during our group read month. It's been one I've kept putting off, but I do want to see how everything ends.

That's good! I thought I might be the only one.
Sadly I had to put a lot of thought in to remembering much about how the series ended. I remember bits and pieces and get confused on how they all fit together!
I was so annoyed with the second that I swore off the series, and was glad I didn't go for the third one because I heard that had few answers as well. But the prequel is supposed to answer a lot of stuff. I'm starting to feel like the point is only to sell more books.
The Death Cure was fine, but definitely didn't live up to the awesomeness of Maze Runner. I will probably read Kill Order at some point since it should answer a lot of questions about the past.
Kill order answered only some questions. Mostly it is about how people experienced the beginning of all of this. I just finished the other night and it is a decent story but not as good as Maze Runner. The main advantage it has is you know how messed up things will end up and you are invested from having read the trilogy. If you like a lot of fight scenes with a lot of detail you will like it. I like the psychological turmoil and suspense much more that the other books had. Still glad to have read The Kill Order as an extension to the series though.
I loved the series, but felt death cure was rushed, I think it could of been so much better, as with most series, they become successful and writers are often pushed to get a third out quick. Still a series I really enjoyed though.

The group read is now officially open for January! Please remember to spoiler tag (or at least shout out the word spoiler if you struggle with tags) MAJOR, game-changing spoilers. If you're randomly chatting about characters buying groceries or some other plot point that isn't any sort of huge reveal, you don't have to tag this stuff. We're only looking to hide things that could ruin the book for someone.
Because we use our topics for the entire series, please use a tag and let us know if you're referring to something from books 2 and 3 which could happen to spoil book 1 for people who haven't caught up yet.
Here's how you make a spoiler tag, in case you didn't know!

Also, feel free to stop into our fantasy casting topic and give us your ideas for you who think looks like your vision of the book's characters. You can find it here : http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/9...

Okay
Yeah, looking forward to the movie. I think the suspense factor will make a good movie and feel like 2 hours or less will be enough time to get the gist of the book.
imdb is listing it as 2013, but I'm thinking that will not come to pass until at least 2014 minimum (if that) because as of right now, the only decisions that have been made are for the studio, the director and screewriters. No casting has even started.http://www.deadline.com/2012/08/fox-s...
I've read the first 2, so my goal for the month is to read The Death Cure and maybe Kill Order if I get to it. These books are great, I love the suspense and dystopian world.
I'm just over halfway through the first one. I have not read the series before. I am enjoying it so far. To be honest I kinda just want to know what is going on at this point. I did put the second one on hold at the library so I am planning on continuing with the series.
One question, though I realize it's a little late, I see now there's a prequel. Is this the type of prequel those who have read would recommend reading before or after Maze Runner?
Natalie, I haven't started this book yet but from what I can gather thrilogy was released before the prequel, which was released not too long ago, so I wouldn't think there is a problem reading books 1-3 first.
I would read them them in publication order. Reading the prequel before the original trilogy would probably spoil some things.
Havent read the prequel yet, though I agree with Carina and Jenny that it'd be easier just to start with the Maze Runner :)
I just finished The Kill Order and definitely would recomend reading the trilogy first. As a rule of thumb though order of publication is usually best.
I really need to get this book series. It sounds so interesting. So read the series in publication order to not spoil anything is what I am getting?
Daniel wrote: "I really need to get this book series. It sounds so interesting. So read the series in publication order to not spoil anything is what I am getting?"I would, yeah. I haven't read the 3rd book or prequel yet, but there are so many questions in the trilogy that I don't think reading the prequel first would be a good idea if you want to keep the mystery and suspense more intact.
That's what I figured. I generally go by publication order but I know sometimes it can just fill holes or explain futher rather than spoil. I'll hold off then. Thanks!

Okay. I will have to check my library for it.
Just started this today - I am on page 137 (reading on a nook, so not sure how those page numbers translate to other ereaders and hard copy books). This is not a book I think I would have read without seeing it here as a group read, but after a little slowness in the initial pages, I am hooked. So far, there is a nice mystery to what is going on with Thomas. Like someone else said, at this point I just want to know what the heck is going on!
Well, and it doesn't answer many questions either. That's what ended up making me annoyed with the series. But it's a lot of great action, anyway.
Wow, the book really does pick up half way. I'm actually really liking this! It is frustrating, all the secrets, but the action more than makes up for it.
You'll have to tell me what made you cry. I think I remember what it was, but just want to make sure that I'm not forgetting, so I don't accidentally blurt out something that happened in book 2 instead.
