If you want to read the Grimms, the best editions are those edited by Jack Zipes or Maria Tatar. You can also checkout several original fairy tales at the following website:

Krista (findyourshimmy) | 16 comments Thanks for the feedback, all. I'm familiar with the Disney shows and appreciate the recommendation. Many of the Disney characters, if I understand correctly, are "fancified" versions of the Grimms' and other's tales.

I did just read The Annotated Peter Pan (The Centennial Edition) which was edited by Maria Tatar. I know she has a Grimm one available as well. Looks like that will be going on my wishlist. :o)

Jessi | 76 comments I believe I have the Zipes Grimms collection which supposidely has all the Grimm tales (even ones that weren't edited or something towards the back of the book) I really enjoyed it. There were even some tales just by one brother.

Jessi | 76 comments I didn't notice anything Alice in Wonderland related. When did that happen? I'm a huge Alice fan dunno how I missed it.

When they flip through the storybook in one of the first few episodes, you can see a picture of Alice with the caterpillar.

Finally found a picture on the web: http://new.roneyzone.com/blogs/once-u...

Priyak Ghosh | 2 comments its really an enjoyable fairytale show and quite interesting one.i think there are only two persons who can stand against that awful filthy cunning mayor and they are Emma,Rumplestileskin.he really sometime freaks me out and he acts kinda weird like his name.more precisely those aforementioned two characters are not engulfed by that treacherous mayor.Cricket is quite a good character but that mayor was making him like a machine who can only be operated by her and now he is free.

I haven't brought it, but there is Once Upon a Time: A Collection of Classic Fairy Tales which is a tie in to the tv show. It doesn't have illustations, just the tales (like the Grimms. It looks like if you have a Grimm collection, you have the times).

I adore this show! The writers do an amazing job of weaving in the fairy tales with the plots of the modern-day characters, and the casting is fantastic. And you know, the costumes and the sets are magical as well. Fairy tales are so rich in psychological meaning, and it's fun to see a television program tackle their complexity and resonance for the 21st century.

I'm with you--I hope he isn't really dead! It's a fairy tale--anything can happen, right?

Cierra (itscierraduh) | 2 comments I just recently found out about this Once Upon a Time show. I downloaded the ABC app on my Ipad and found it on there. I ended up watching every ep in one day. I like it so far. I haven't heard about this Grimm show yet though. How is it?

message 64: by Michele (new)

Michele | 520 comments There's a Once Upon a Time marathon today (New Year's Day), so you can catch up on all the episodes at once :)

message 65: by Diane (new)

Diane Reed Yippee! Something to distract me from my hangover, at least ; ) Any fabulous fairy tale/modern retelling recommendations for 2012?

message 66: by Krista (new)

Krista (findyourshimmy) | 16 comments Madame - Since Once Upon a Time is a new show this season, it's not yet available as a DVD. You should be able to watch all the episodes via the ABC website, though. :o)

Cierra - Here's a thread about Grimm: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/6...

message 67: by Erick (new)

Erick | 1 comments I have to admit: Once... is a good show. Better than good, when I heard of it I thought, "meh", but watched the first episode and I had to go and catch the rest from the abc website. Looking forward to the new episodes. There's hope for tv yet!
Well, there is Dexter and Broadwalk Empire, but that's another topic...

message 68: by Diane (new)

Diane Reed I had the same reaction--I feared Once Upon A Time might be too corny or shallow (and ruin the depth & resonance of fairy tales that I love so much), but instead they really ran with it and have done a good job (so far). I wonder if this will translate into people reading more fairy tales?

message 69: by Ari (new)

Ari (ariistocrat) Urgh I hate this show, but for some reason I keep watching it. It's probably because I can't stand Emma. I feel like she should be younger and less jaded, & do we really have to see a biker jacket in every episode in an attempt to emphasize how ~tough~ you are? I actually find myself rooting for Regina lol.

I think the other actors are all great though, especially Rumples and the Queen!

(Oh, and the princes need to be hotter! x_x Taylor Lautner, where are you?!)

Oh Ari, I'm so happy to see you. I thought I was the only one rooting for Regina.

message 72: by Jessika (new)

Jessika Hoover (jessalittlebooknerd) Jamie wrote: "I wonder who the stranger is in storybrook"

Me too! I'm so excited for tonight.

message 73: by Diane (new)

Diane Reed I'm excited about the entrance of the Stranger, because even though the Hansel & Gretel episode was intriguing, I'm getting a bit tired of Emma's character (not because Jennifer Morrison isn't a good actress, but because they've only given her 1 note to play so far: self-righteous & indignant). I'm hoping the Stranger might ruffle some feathers and allow Emma to show more than one side. Even Mary Margaret was more interesting as Snow White in fairy tale land (especially as a thief!), but as soon as she gets to Storybrooke, she's pure and good all of the time : (. I've got the new episode on DVR, and I'm hoping they'll bring complexity back to these female characters--Regina can't be the only one to have any fun!!

message 74: by Jinx (new)

Jinx Sapphire (jinxbeatrixswann) Yah so we now know the stranger is a writer and could have been to storybrook before. also he could be from the fairy tale world.

message 75: by Diane (new)

Diane Reed Ooh, I've heard rumors that the Stranger might actually be one of the Brothers Grimm, or be the "writer" of Henry's book! Fun to think about : ) And I take back what I said about Mary Margaret in Storybrooke--she's finally getting more interesting and rebellious now (like the way they made her character in the Fairy Tale world, where she's a highway robber ; )

message 76: by Diane (new)

Diane Reed Krista of the Many Sparkles and and Shimmies wrote: "I am simply adoring this new series. It's filled with magic and wonder along with some sinister darkness. Whereas Grimm strikes me as more paranormal, dark crime fighting, Once Upon a Time fills ..."

I love your remarks that OUAT fills you with "hope for fantasy and whimsy", all the while allowing for "sinister darkness." This is the reason I enjoy it, too--that delicate balance between magic and shadows.

By the way, I think it's really worth it to read the original Grimm's fairy tales--the details are fascinating and full of psychological richness and depth. Also, Marie Louise Von Franz's work The Interpretation of Fairy Tales is an interesting secondary source, offering some compelling insights. Enjoy : )

message 77: by Jinx (new)

Jinx Sapphire (jinxbeatrixswann) Yah I agree too love the your remark about hope for fanatsy and allwolling for sinster darknesss

message 78: by Krista (new)

Krista (findyourshimmy) | 16 comments Awe, thanks, Diane and Jamie! I appreciate your kind words. The original Grimm's are on my Kindle and my ever-growing mound of TBRs. :o)

message 79: by Diane (new)

Diane Reed Yes, I know a lot about that mound : ) If you get a chance, take a look at Grimm's version of Cinderella. There are a lot of cool details in it that I'd never noticed before. Like how one of her stepsisters cut off her toe to fit the glass slipper, then got on the Prince's horse with him & bled a trail all the way back to the castle! Note to self: people who leave a trail of blood usually aren't the real McCoy! ; ) Luckily, the Prince figures that out all by himself. I love how fairy tales can demonstrate such insight into human character sometimes.

Jinx Sapphire (jinxbeatrixswann) the show keeps getting more interesting with last sundays new episode

message 83: by Jinx (new)

Jinx Sapphire (jinxbeatrixswann) they havent really showed henry in the last couple episodes
only for like 5 minutes

message 84: by Cat (new)

Cat (dodgeremerson) What are people's thoughts on the latest episodes?

Warning: Beyond Be Spoilers

I wasn't a fan of "Heart of Darkness," though I do like the fact that they're making Mary Margaret more like her Snow White self - aka willing to break the rules and do the dirty work she needs to.

"Red-Handed" was easily my favourite episode all season. The "twist" at the end with Red Riding Hood was something I'd seen before, but I was still glad they included it, since it definitely removes Once Upon a Time from its Disney-fied origins more. And that is always good. They're definitely making the show unique by beginning to separate the Disney versions from the show versions, thus giving it its own identity. Actually starting to enjoy it some, since the writers seem to have a real idea of what they're doing now - or perhaps they were given more free reign?

Regardless, it's also interesting to see how Regina's hold on Storybrooke is slowly beginning to falter with Emma there. Making Emma sheriff was probably the best move the writers could have done - though I'm still angry they killed off Graham. It's also good to see Regina is starting to recognize the fact that her power is beginning to fail, thus her growing brutality towards the other characters (i.e. killing Kathryn).

message 85: by Diane (new)

Diane Reed I loved the Red-Handed episode, too--I even reread some versions of Little Red Riding Hood to familiarize myself with the story. I love the twist they gave to Red so that it makes who is good or bad in the story more ambivalent! I feel like the writers of the show really respect fairy tales and all the nuances of psychological meaning they contain : )

Christine (chrisarrow) | 1393 comments Mod
I've seen that twist before, most recently in the Nightmares and Fairy Tales Graphic comics series.

Shereen Vedam | 146 comments I watched the Season One finale this past weekend and loved it. Great job of the special effects and story telling.

No spoilers in case someone taped it to watch later, but well worth my Sunday night TV watching time.

Can't wait for Season Two.

It's so nice to see fairytales on TV/and the big screen again.

message 89: by Tracey (new)

Tracey (stewartry) I love the groundwork they laid for season 2. I couldn't for the life of me see where it was going next - and by the end I was happier than I have been about any tv show in a long time. Well done, them!

message 90: by [deleted user] (new)

Excellent first season! Hypnotic beginning— a little slow in the middle, but the last few episodes and the finale more than made up for the sluggishness of the (few)mediocre episodes. ‘Looking forward to season two.

Ronyell (rabbitearsblog) | 21 comments I just saw the Season One finale and it was fantastic! I can't wait to see what would happen to all the characters now that it seems that a new threat is coming!

The woman who played Abilgal is currently in Copper on BBC America.

message 95: by Diane (new)

Diane Reed I interviewed Anastasia Griffith--the woman who plays Abigail--for a Once Upon a Time fansite. She has a lead role in Copper now, which sounds like a fascinating historical show! I personally loved the way Once Upon a Time ended last season--I thought it was gutsy of them to break the curse & introduce magic to the Storybrooke, the "Land with no magic." Can't wait to see what happens next!!

message 96: by Christine (new)

Christine (chrisarrow) | 1393 comments Mod
I have seen the first two eppys of Copper. It's enjoyable in a slightly eye browing rising way. Griffith is very good, I must say. In fact, she and the man who plays Henry Morehouse (the same actor who played Henry in Bloodties) are the best parts of the show.
