It's time to nominate our October book
How about A Clash of Kings by George R.R. Martin? With the TV show on hiatus, what better way to get your ASoIaF fix and get caught up / refreshed for Season Two. I'm won't bother with a summary since even those who live under rocks must know about this series by now...
While this is the second book in a series, it's different characters than the first, so may escape the "second book" rule. (I haven't read the first, but will be reading this one.)
Camera Obscura:
CAN'T FIND A RATIONAL EXPLANATION TO A MYSTERY? CALL IN THE QUIET COUNCIL. The mysterious and glamorous Lady De Winter is one of their most valuable agents. A despicable murder inside a locked and bolted room on the Rue Morgue in Paris is just the start. This whirlwind adventure will take Milady to the highest and lowest parts of that great city - and cause her to question the very nature of reality itself

Most of the books I would nominate, have already been read. Clash would be the best choice but I will go with something else like Paul Kearney's Hawkwood's Voyage.
Serenity wrote: "How about A Clash of Kings by George R.R. Martin? With the TV show on hiatus, what better way to get your ASoIaF fix and get caught up / refreshed for Season Two. I'm w..."I already know one group that is reading it now, and another going to read the book I think in the next month or so.
May I suggest a new release? The Black Gods War by Moses Sirigar. I've read the novella that he put out to tease the book, and it's very good. Also, he's an indie who is a member here on goodreads as well. Might be able to bring him in for discussion as well.

Are you sure you've got the name of the book and author right? I can't find either one on Goodreads.
Kevin wrote: "Serenity wrote: "How about A Clash of Kings by George R.R. Martin? With the TV show on hiatus, what better way to get your ASoIaF fix and get caught up / refreshed for ..."Yes, it would be nice if we read something that isn't being read by other groups or hasn't been read recently.

I second this. I'm reading the first book and the author's got a knack for this writing thing.

Yeah, I seem to have butchered his name. Not sure how the search in goodreads works, but the title should have worked. Maybe it needed the apostrophe in the God's? In any case, I went and pulled it from my "to read" list. Here's the direct link in goodreads:

just to add my two cents here: i LOVE Clash of Kings, a 5 star read for me...but it is definitely a 2nd book in a series, and so it is clearly against the nomination parameters. a person can't read it and get everything that is going on without experiencing the first book (or, i suppose, the excellent tv series). also, as someone's mentioned, it has been featured lately in at least a couple popular fantasy groups.
Michael wrote: "The Kinshield Legacy by K.C. May?"I wholeheartedly second the Kinshield Legacy. Its sequel is already on my TBR pile.
I'd go for The Edge of the World by Kevin J. Anderson. It's the first of a trilogy of which the third book has just recently been published. So those of you who like the first one can go right on with reading the other two. (and most of you will like this one, it's really good).http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/60...
I vote for Prince of Thorns by Mark Lawrence. I just read it last week but want to re-read it quickly. I'm still thinking about it. Plus, he's a member on GR.
I would like to nominate The Enchantment of Abigail Brown by Mark Waters. This is the first of twelve books in the Nousidian Chronicles saga and this author's debut novel. The characters are interesting, the plot intriguing and the story twists and turns like a hungry snake in a fast car. I would heartily recommend this to anyone who enjoys escaping into a well formed and inspired fantasy world. Mark has joined Goodreads recently, so give him some love ...
The Enchantment of Abigail Brown
Deryni Rising by Katherine Kurtz. Its the first in series I've loved since they were first written forever ago ...
I'd like to second both of the following books as I'be been wanting a good excuse to read them:
The Black God's War A Stand-Alone Novel and The Kinshield Legacy
Serenity wrote: "How about A Clash of Kings by George R.R. Martin? With the TV show on hiatus, what better way to get your ASoIaF fix and get caught up / refreshed for Season Two. I'm w..."I vote for A Clash of Kings too...i am reading it now for the second time and is great
mark wrote: "just to add my two cents here: i LOVE Clash of Kings, a 5 star read for me...but it is definitely a 2nd book in a series, and so it is clearly against the nomination parameters. a person can't read..."But the group has read #1 A Game of Thrones, so it qualifies. I do agree though, that other groups are reading it so it would be nice to read something different.
Sandra aka Sleo wrote: "Kevin wrote: "Serenity wrote: "How about A Clash of Kings by George R.R. Martin? I second Little Big. Its a book with so many undertones that it is not what it seems. Also it is one of the most complex book in the structure of the plot and the way it was written. It took me a couple of tries last summer to finish the book.
Jesslyn wrote: "Sandra aka Sleo wrote: "Kevin wrote: "Serenity wrote: "How about A Clash of Kings by George R.R. Martin? With the TV show on hiatus, what better way to get your ASoIaF ..."Agree with you 100%.
Song of Ice and Fire has gotten so popular with the HBO series. I know there are groups here on Goodread that does not even read fantasy, now are reading the first book. Plus its not the only thing that Martin has even done. But before the series came out, I tried to get people to read it, no one would care to.
How about something fitting October? I was thinking something slightly spooky and supernatural. What about Something from the Nightside? But if this get support I'll gladly second Empire in Black and Gold.
Please do keep it to one nomination per person, folks. Otherwise we get too many and it gets crazy. Those of you who have nominated more than one, pick one!

Guess that gets filed under 'things forgotten'!
Previous nomination deleted.
I nominate
Empire in Black and Gold
which someone already seconded--Thanks! This is an awesome series.
mark wrote: "just to add my two cents here: i LOVE Clash of Kings, a 5 star read for me...but it is definitely a 2nd book in a series, and so it is clearly against the nomination parameters. a person can't read..."Just pointing out that Clash of Kings is not outside of the nomination parameters, since this group has previously read the first book in the series (according to the group bookshelf). As for whether we should read something less popular, that's up to you guys. Although I've never understood knee-jerk compulsion to reject anything popular in the mainstream - why the indignation when something beloved and underrated finally garners the attention and acclaim it deserves? Most of the time, the Public has crap taste, so I personally celebrate these rare moments of clarity and good taste :)
I've actually already read this book lol, just thought that those who haven't shouldn't miss out.
I second The Eye of The World! My BF has been trying to get me to read the series for a couple years... I haven't read it yet because I know it's such a big series but it would be cool do read the first one as a BoTM.
How about Brother, Betrayed by Indie author Danielle Raver? I just finished it and it was fabulous :-D
Rachel wrote: "How about Brother, Betrayed by Indie author Danielle Raver? I just finished it and it was fabulous :-D"Sorry, as it was last time, no books that are only available in ebook format, unless there's a MMP hidden away somewhere?
