needed a break from the usual genre that I read.
I'm currently listening to The Road to Gandolfo by Robert Ludlum narrated by Scott Brick. It's great.
Anyone who likes Ludlum-esque spy stories and Espionage Thrillers whill get a kick out of this. I never expected Ludlum to have a sense of humor like this, nor Scott Brick to pull it off so well. It's a great performance and the story is funny. In many ways, it's as much a satire of the world today as it was the Vietnam War Era it was written in. It's good.

Okay, this is unexpectedly good. If you like the Ludlum spy stories, and I do, and you like audiobooks, by necessity - I do, then this is a gem. I didn't expect serious talking Scott Brick the Narrator to have a funny bone in his body. Yet, he pulls off the jokes like a pro. And best of all, Ludlum's poking fun at his own books novels and characters, and james bond and I think some Desmond Bagely pokes are in here too.
This is good.
This is good.

With a recommendation like that, I had to put it on my TBR list.

You'll like it, and on this one, the audiobook is a lot of fun too. Scott Brick's voice is ussually like the "narrator's voice'" on tose old 60s and 70s cartoons (the "serious ones"). He uses it to full advantage here.
I've laughed aloud listening several times. already. Very's 70s and 60s ish though.

Read the author's note "foreward" too. That's hilarious.

On the lighter side, I'm reading

I'm reading The Thousand Names. It's got a lot of action. It's an unusual fantasy story, more alternate reality with all the trimmings of Napoleonic war and The War of 1812. Muskets and soldiers.
Part of it brought me back to Navy Bootcamp where I was put in a rifle company and had to learn to march formations. "FORM A square" That's not one I learned but I did learn oblique marching and maneuvering. As the RCPO, I got to give the orders.
And the battle action is pretty cool. Reminds me of Little Round Top in the TNT Movie "Gettysburg". Intense, on the ground eyes in front.

Re your on the lighter side, had you read the earlier books in this series? Were they good too? I have them but no chance to read them yet and just wondered if they were funny too.

I've read the entire series and loved everyone one of them. There light fun brain candy.

I thought it was good but not great, although the ending surprised me. Hope you enjoy it!

I loved this series too. It helps if your well versed in Texican Redneck... I have family from East Texas. :)

Road to Gandolfo is my favorite Ludlum book -- bar none -- because for once, he's in on the joke.

Starting Hot Art: Chasing Thieves and Detectives Through the Secret World of Stolen Art . Yes, there's a reason I'm reading all these art-crime books.

Finished and ending in a weighty place is probably a good way to put it without giving anything away.

Yep just finished and you summed it up exactly. Not bad not great.

I thought the end was the best bit. The rest was a really a travelogue of Florence. I do want to read the next one now due to the ending.
It reminded me of a book called Gray Redemption with a similar end to it.

I finished and I did enjoy the story, but, it was like watching a lifetime movie.

Travelogues are more direct and to the point. That was my last Dan Brown novel. If he thinks he can write down everything his tour guide says and have readers buy it, he should start over.
Even though I'm not a fan of the TV show, a friend talked me into reading:

Sounds like a good one. Have you seen the movie The Day of the Dolphin?...one of my favorites!

Sounds like a good one. Have you seen the movie The Day of the Dolphin?...one of my favorites!

Unfortunately not. I very rarely go to movies. Nearly finished with this book though and it's one of the best A/A books I've read for awhile.

I've been an A/A reader for many years, from Alistair MacLean and Desmond Bagley on through Clive Cussler and some of the current ones. Have to say judging by this book, Grumley is going to hold his own in very good company.

The main character is fantastic. The jewel heist background is fascinating. The laughs are off the chart. If you are a GOLFER, there's a bit in there that is priceless. If you are not a GOLFER, it's still priceless. This will make for a rollicking movie.
Just started Blowback by Valerie Plame. This is the real deal, so you can't pass this one up.

About 1/3 of the way through Death's Acre: Inside the Legendary Forensic Lab the Body Farm Where the Dead Do Tell Tales.
