I'm reading the last (last 2 actually as this is a one volume edition of 2 books) of the Riyria Revelations. This is one of those "I've been meaning to get to for a long time" reads. It happens now and then. Lots of people recommended this/these to me, but I kept putting them off.

These are excellent books, lots of action, good characters, good story. All good.

David Dalton | 152 comments I am zipping thru A Touch of Malice A Nick Bracco Thriller by Gary Ponzo. All the "A Touch of . ." books are excellent as far as I am concerned. This is the 4th one. Dealing with a couple of FBI agents and one of them has family in the mob that help out now and again. Well written & great set of characters. They sell for $2.99, and I think the 1st one: A Touch of Deceit by Gary Ponzo is only $0.99 or such. Try the 1st one and see if you don't get hooked as well.

Rizwan Khalil Finished reading Killing Floor yesterday, and it was an entertaining, quick read. I was not disappointed with my first introduction to Jack Reacher, although I'd say I expected a bit more action than that was presented in the story. As long as I was reading, I was always picturing it like a Clint Eastwood movie, with Reacher clearly was an Eastwood type ultimate badass....And the story did have a modern day western feel to it.

Already started Die Trying, which has grabbed me from the very first sentence as well!

Here's my review of Killing Floor for anyone interested:

I'm reading The Lost Stars: Tarnished Knight, and it's good. It's interesting to get the POV of MCs who were the part of the villains' (Syndicate Worlds) group in previous books.

message 2860: by Ctgt (new)

Ctgt Just finished Ready Player One and like I said before if you grew up around the 80's, I think you would like this book. A ton of geek references but it's really an adventure story. Nothing too deep, just a fun, entertaining read. I've already read Fated so I'm getting started on The Wildman, with Grifter's Game and In Cold Blood waiting on deck.

Rizwan Khalil Just browsing through Amazon.com's "customers also bought"-area looking for new books/authors in A/A criteria (I always do that whenever I don't have anything to browse), and came across a new author Andrew Peterson and his potentially kickass Nathan McBride series. Already there are 3 books of that series are out, and all of their reviews/plot summaries sound super-awesome! Has anyone read any of Peterson's books? Any comments? Thinking about starting the first book First to Kill soon.... (Just as soon as I finished reading 8-9 books I'm in various stages of reading :P)

I'm sorting through the books I have shelved in the "living room". Since this is a small place that sounds a little more "grand" than it is. I have a shelf that is about to collapse...

Anyway anything not "a book" that was on the shelves has gone to the attic. I'm now going through books I've read and don't care for to read again...and books I haven't read yet. The first are going into a sell stack, the other I'm trying to read some of, especially if I've owned them for like 5 years or more!

Reading Chasing the Ghost by Bob Meyer and I am finding this one slow going..zzzzzzzzzzz..not what I expected from a Meyer novel. I am 48% into it but unless things pick up I suspect this will be lowest rated Bob Mayer book.

I'm just not a "Hard-boiled" detective type of reader I guess....

But the movies are great. I still steal the one liners. At my son's in-laws' last Christmas as they were handing out my gifts I said, "I hope you like them because the man at the aquarium said they wouldn't take them back."

message 2880: by Wes (new)

Wes (wesmoore1) | 21 comments Speaking of Seal Team 666, I found it on sale at B&N and bought it on impulse, and started reading it. It's not what one would call an actual "action/adventure" book; it's more like a non-fiction action/adventure. I'm finding it interesting as to what motivates these "men of action" and how the navy separates the men from the lesser men as far as their physical and mental determination.

I'm still working on James Rollin's Blood Gospel. Lions and tigers and vampire Catholics, oh my God!

Rizwan Khalil Literally just stumbled on to two Urban Fantasy series in the vein of Dresden Files, one is The Iron Druid Chronicles by Kevin Hearne, the first book is Hounded. Looks like just my type of fantasy-action-adventure-mythology-1st person narrative all rolled in to one! Another is Twenty Palaces series by Harry Connolly with the first book is Child of Fire, which also looks really awesome. Anyone read any of these? Any comments on quality will be helpful.

Well Fated is the group read for June, so off course I found out about it that time, and yes, Alex Verus series looks just as awesome....All 3 of them are currently on top of my TBR pile, once I've done some headway with the Jack Reacher rush I'm currently on, I'll go onto them too. Combining the above mentioned books with Jim Butcher & Larry Correia works, and this Urban/Modern/Action Fantasy thingy is very quickly becoming one of my most preferred new genre. (On a whim even collected ALL the Mercy Thompson books by Patricia Briggs yesterday, although I didn't find the whole settings/plot summaries much interesting, but what the hell, right?)

P.S. A very nice informative review Hugh! As usual.

I've read Hounded, and plan to continue the series. The Harry Connolly series is quite dark and twisted, but it was very good. I just need to read the prequel, but otherwise caught up on the series.

Still working through The Immortals and it suddenly went from "Okay" and "Not bad" to "Oh my God you have to read this!...bring another box of tissues will yah?"

It's also free in audiobook form I believe. Right now it's highly recommended with the caviat that there are still places it could go that might dim the warm glow I've bene feeling since passing the 48% mark.

Be prepared if you read it, it's tragic, violent and sad but it's about humanity so how could it not be? And, the sadness is bitter, but so sweet in meaning.

The Immortals by Tracy Hickman

I got my copy from Amazon and I'm using Kindle. I do a lot of listening to the Text to Speech function while I drive.

It's free at "Podiobooks.com" as an audiobook.

There are some good reviews on it also in goodreads.

You will need some tissues. It's emotionally powerful and Hickman takes the reader on the emotional rollercoaster.

I also offer a warning, stick with it no matter what because at about the 40% mark is when it changes from "just another Dystopian, bilogical appocolypse sci-fi story" to some really powerfull writing about there. I think the medicrity of some of the things going on with characters in the first half of the story is intentional so you can see the difference between that and how much they come back to life in the second half of the book.

So, lots of tissues, and, stick with it until at least 70% before giving it up. (If you go that far, I don't think you will, unless it's go go for another box of kleenex.)

I haven't seen that episode. We are just finishing up the first season. Episode 9 of season one is right in there with this as a powerful messenger. I have seen scattered shows from later seasons and I believe it's probably a good facsimale of the same message too.

(view spoiler)

Just make sure you stick with it through the halfway mark. At 40% is when the book transformed, made sense of the mediocrity before it and became a powerful story about the triumph of the human spirit in the darkest of places.

It's on the basic kindle with the keyboard.

I use an old Kindle Touch. The way to tell is, does it have an earpiece? I also augment mine with a bluetooth transmitter that plugs into the earpiece and transmits to a bluetooth speaker (AUG 425), A bluetooth Headset (I like Go stuff) or a Bluetooth Reciever that takes it into my car stereo for when I'm driving. None of that costs over 20 dollars (if it does, it's not much) and it all works well for me.

The only place I see it listed as a feature is for the original kindle 7 inch with a keyboard. My mother has been able to use it with her new Kindle Fire (the older Kindle's don't have it).

if you do "Google Books" they have a reader that works very well. It's just their books are more expensive and not as well stocked as Kindle is.

Kindle 3/4G (With Keyboard has "Read to Me" which is A.K.A. Text to Speech.

The Kindle Dx 3/4G (my first Kindle) has a huge reading window, keyboard and features "Read to me" (Text to Speech).

These will also play audiobooks from Audiobile.com too.

This Kindle Fire HD 8.9" Tablet has read to me (text to speech) capability too.
