Well, Eileen, I was beginning to get depressed toward the end. The author wrote that she had to get counseling while she was writing it. I can see why.

I have a younger friend who was in the service when she was younger yet. She has PTSD, and the VA thinks it is because she was raped by a fellow soldier while in service. The investigation swept it under the rug. I think that was just more of the abuse she suffered growing up. Be that as it may, she is so angry that she won't let anyone help her. She gets mad at all of them. AND they screw her around with doctor changes, discounting her need, cancelling appts, etc. The first thing to address in PSTD has got to be anger.

So true. I worked for a number of years on the psych ward of a VA hospital and the majority of our patients at the time were Viet Nam veterans with PTSD. It was truly an eye-opening experience for me.

I don't treat PTSD, but sometimes I'm the only person my guys see who'll tell them they need to see someone about their PTSD (like) symptoms (never mind everybody who is anyone in their life knows about them and has already told them).

I find, that patience works best somtimes (people are different there is no single approach).

Again, I'm no PhD or anything, that's just my experience about what works for me.

Still Reading Rook...does it count as "reading" when your listening to an audiobook?

It's a wonderful book. Lots of humor. I don't know about you Lady D, but I have a hard time not picturing Audrey Hepburn as Miss Thomas.

It's sort of, Buffy the Vampire Slayer meets 1984 in London...with a subtle, dry sense of humor mixed in with a narrator that has a knack for pointing out the absurdities that everyone else walks by and acts like they don't notice.. until they don't notice.

You guys who recommended this are right. Great book. I like it.

This one is good, the audiobook, like the audio book for MHI is really good. The asides thought-reactions are wonderful and, it's in the tradition of Dr. Who, Prime-Eval the UK version of "Being Human" and "The Prisoner (infor-mation). I'd even say it's got more than a hint of Harry Potter (meaning the style, not the content)...and, it's good. Interesting and amusing all at the same time. I'm really liking it.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I just finished Drama: An Actor's Education, an autobiography by John Lithgow. It was really, really good, even though I know nothing about acting, especially stage acting. Don't particularly care about it, either. Still, Lithgow made it great. My review is here:

Grant Gardiner | 14 comments Hey everyone. I don't post much on the boards here but I'd just like to say thanks for the back and forth about all the different books you're reading. Every now and then I peruse the lists to see what seems to be good and what I may be interested in. I think I have to thank Curmudgeon (?) for shouting out Spinward Fringe. Great series. And I really need to track down a copy of Monster Hunters International and The Rook.

I'm really glad you liked Spinward Fringe. I really liked that and gobbled up every brodcast. For a while I thought I was the only one.

Rook just got very interesting (That was one HELL of a dinner party... and I mean hell in at least two of several connotations).

MHI is a fun read too, I hope you enjoy it as much as I have. (I've read all 4 of them and they are all good.)

Those two are pretty much at the top of my 'buy list' now. Read the first two and liked them a lot.

They'd probably be coming sooner except a free download of Oath of Swordsdropped into my Kindle. I usually try Weber's books as some of them are definitely favorites and not sure how I missed this series. Traditional swords and sorcery storyline, great characters and the hero's reluctant relationship with *his* god is very funny.

Actually, probably not a bad thing I found this late as there are four books in the series, written four years apart! Anyway, have the second book coming from PaperbackSwap and my library has the last two.

Been trawling through a lot of e-pulp which is an intriguing little corner of the prose universe.
Spinward Fringe was good and made me realise how much I miss the space opera genre but before that I read The Troubleshooter Red-Eyed Killer by Bard Constantine which is the free prequel to a story I really enjoyed called The Troubleshooter New Haven Blues by Bard Constantine . Both are crazy fast Dieselpunk sci-fi with a strong Bladerunner-noir vibe to them and they were a lot of fun.

Almost done with The Rook by Daniel O'Malley and, where I'd say I'm enjoying it as much as I did Monster Hunter International, I'm going to be the Rebel and classify them as distinctly different (Save the Urban Fantasy elements).

It is a hell of a lot of fun. Not so much action adventure as it is a mystery/thriller or suspence novel for me (MHI was pure action with vampires and Zombies). This one is very cleverly tongue in cheek yet with a serious minded plot. Humor on two levels, as a subtle and not so blatant satire, and humorous through the comments (and thoughts) of some wonderful characters. James Bond meets the Monster Control Board from MHI... except told through Miss Monnypenny's eyes.

It's just delightful, light and fun. I'm glad I pushed it down my read list.

It's kind of like adrenaline junkies with guns. A secret group gets together, puts on protective gear and they shoot at each other with live ammo. That's a little simplistic, but you get the point.
A somewhat famous writer from the 80's ends up teaching at a small community college, saves his class from a student shooter and then ends up joining this group with two of his students. I won't go into too much detail, but his life was going downhill since the 80's and this incident prompted a reawakening of his muse. It has some action, but it's much more of a psychological look at this main character, his actions from his time of fame and what happens as he works his way through this new phase of life. There is a definite crime angle that adds a fair amount of twists to the plot. I really liked this book.

Jim/Eileen, I reviewed that one on my site. I liked it very much. It has a very exciting ending. The plot twists are ordinary, but the detail with which he describes tactical gear is extraordinary. Probably because of his stint as a special-ops guy.
