It wouldn't be Pippi on Board or Pippi on the South seas by Astrid Lindgren would it? They sound like they might be a possibility.
This probably isn't it, but have you checked into the Newbery Award winning The Twenty-One Balloons?
Thanks for the suggestions, but neither of these is correct. It wasn't an adventure book, it was much more a quiet surrealism (if you can call a kid's chapter book that).
Still listening for ideas...thanks.
Thanks, Lobstergirl. I looked through the list and didn't see it, but my memory of the book is so tenuous that I could have missed it.By the way, you never seem to age a bit.
Cool suggestions - I'd never heard of these authors. From what I can tell of Mildred Lawrence, her books are too much set in the "real world" for this. Tell me if I'm wrong, though.
Same with Elizabeth Ladd.
Anne Molloy, I doubt it - guessing from her titles, she liked to write mysteries.
This book was offbeat and charming, and no more about real places than, say, The Phantom Tollbooth.

Thank you, but really my profile picture is like a reverse Dorian Gray. It stays beautiful, but behind closed doors I'm fighting off the ravages.

Fantasy? You didn't mention that. Also can you recall the peculiarities? That may help with searching.
Here's a free bump for autumn. Come back in a few months and simply reply with any comment to bump it again, ok? Otherwise we might sadly conclude you have abandoned the quest.
Is anybody familiar with the Canadian children's book "A Little Island Princess?"https://www.worldcat.org/title/little...
I can't rule it out.
Seems to be set on Prince Edward Island. Was the island in your book cold weather or tropical? There are a lot more than just a handful of people on that island, too.

All I remember is that it was set on an island, and the island only had maybe 6 or 8 inhabitants. A girl visited the island on a boat one day a week (I think Wednesday). Each person on the island had a peculiarity.
There were a few illustrations, maybe one per chapter or so. Probably about a third-grade reading level.
Any info appreciated!
