Kellie (kellieag) I just read all of A Walk to Remember today...clearly my Friday night was not so eventful :)

Just finished The Mirror by Marlys Millhiser. and now starting Stiff The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers

message 1253: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments I'm almost through reading Catching Fire. I'm reluctant to finish it though, because then I have to wait a whole year for the next one! Now I just have to choose what I'm going to read next. I'm thinking I'm going to read Slaughter House Five. I bought it when we were doing the group read, but never got around to reading it. Now I get to read it for my Intro to Literature class. :D

message 1254: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen I just finished Graceling, and now I think I'm on to Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie.

message 1255: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I finished The Help on Sunday and I really enjoyed it. Even though the book was pretty much complete brain candy, it got me thinking about what life was like back then and how it compares to how things are now. I've started reading The Godfather, which I've read before, and I really want a huge plate of spaghetti with a glass of wine and the time to just read this novel. Oh, it's so good! And once I finish, I get to start the sequel immediately because I bought it recently. Life is good!

message 1256: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (_jes) I just finished the second book in the Sookie Stackhouse (True Blood) series, Living Dead in Dallas. I really got into the first one and impulsively bought the rest--I think there are eight all together in paperback--but the second book was kind of disappointing. Without giving away any spoilers, it just felt so...random. I don't know if that's the best way to describe it, but there were elements to it that just made me think, "Where did THAT come from?"

I've started the next book, Club Dead, so we'll see how this one goes!

message 1257: by jessi (new)

jessi (infinitevantage) | 157 comments I just finished The Soloist. It was decent. I had higher expectations, but it wasn't a complete waste.

I think I am going to start The Kite Runner next.

message 1258: by Jessie (new)

Jessie (Jessie08) | 128 comments For the past two weeks I've been working on Invisible Man along with Don't Call Me a Crook! A Scotsman's Tale of World Travel, Whisky and Crime. I'm a freshman in college and I'm having trouble getting any reading in after all my homework. But I LOVED the intro of Invisible Man, so I'm excited for the rest of the book. Hopefully this weekend I can get some reading in!

message 1259: by [deleted user] (new)

I just finished The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins around an hour ago. It's brilliant! I couldn't put it down, I was reading it covertly in my Applied Behaviour Analysis lecture today, reading it in the bathroom, I've literally been walking around in a daze just reading it. Wow. It's one damn good book.

message 1260: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments My thoughts exactly Roisu! And the sequel is just as good.

I concur. Catching Fire is a great follow-up.

message 1262: by Victoria (new)

Victoria | 1 comments Just finished the Fellowship of the Ring and am now going on to the Two towers. I can see why these books made such grat movies they are better then great!

message 1263: by Bárbara (new)

Bárbara (leviathan_) I've finished The Scarlet Letter, and started One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest :)

message 1264: by jessi (new)

jessi (infinitevantage) | 157 comments Bárbara wrote: "I've finished The Scarlet Letter, and started One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest :)"

Oh man, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's nest if one of my favorite, FAVORITE books. I hope you like it as much as I do!!

message 1265: by [deleted user] (new)

Em...yeah, so I kind of skipped college today because I was reading Catching Fire, which is the sequel to the 'Hunger Games'. I was meant to go to a 10am lecture but I was like feck that, I'm staying in bed reading this! Oh my god, the sequel is brilliant! Maybe even better than the first one. I cannot believe the ending!

message 1266: by Tami (new)

Tami | 3103 comments Mod
Roisu, I totally understand. Catching Fire was brilliant.

I have been skipping class lately too, but it is because of work being crazy and losing track of time. I wish it were because of a great book!

message 1267: by Lindsay (new)

Lindsay (ljones08) wow, reading the last few comments made me really want to read the hunger games and catching fire!! I just added them to my to-read list! :)

I just finished reading The Book Thief, which was really touching and amazingly written, and now I just started on The Poisonwood Bible, which I am hoping will be promising!

message 1268: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen Just finished The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie, and I really liked it. Flavia is a fantastic and very likable character, and is very different from any 11-year-old you'll ever meet. Now I'm finally on to The Hunger Games.

message 1269: by Liz (new)

Liz I started New Moon a week ago, but then Lady Audley's Secret came in for my Vic Lit book club and I've been workiong Jennifer Finney Boylan's She's Not There for a class (plus all of my other school reading...).
I saw The Hunger Games in my school's bookstore the other night and I wanted to buy it SO BADLY because it's gotten the most amazing reviews, but I decided to wait. Clearly I should get it soon!

message 1270: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) I've been reading The Alienist since September first! It is the longest a book has taken me in months, and is really annoying. I'm also reading My Life in France and really enjoy it, Julia seems like she would have been so much fun to spend time with.

message 1271: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I just finished Public Enemies America's Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI, 1933-34. It was amazing! Not only did it inspire me to write my thesis over Bonnie and Clyde, but it taught me a lot about local history. I never knew that Tulsa was big enough to have an underworld, but apparently it did in the 20s and 30s. It switched perspective and took you into the lives of the criminals, which led to me sympathizing and rooting for them (except Baby Face Nelson; he was an ass). But it also took me into the FBI, which was trying to get its footing and made a lot of big mistakes. I highly recommend this book.

message 1272: by Emily (new)

Emily O (readingwhilefemale) | 487 comments I'm currently reading The Martian Chronicles by Bradbury and I love it with all of my heart.

message 1273: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen Just finished The Hunger Games. Two thumbs up.

message 1274: by jessi (new)

jessi (infinitevantage) | 157 comments I just finished The Kite Runner, which I loved, and I started The Glass Castle.

message 1275: by Heather (new)

Heather (andshewontsleep) I finished The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo on Friday. I spent all day reading it at work & only had 10 pages left when it was time to go home, so I flew home and finished it right away. It was so good. For anyone that has started reading this series, how does the second book compare?

Up next I think I'm going to start I Hope They Serve Beer In Hell and I'm still trying to finish Wake Up, Sir!.

Heather, I finished The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo last night and started The Girl Who Played with Fire too. So far, I am only about 50 pages in, but so far so good.

I just noticed that my Currently Reading shelf shows the title in Swedish, which wasn't showing when I looked the book up. I am not reading that version! :) I wish I could read all different languages, but I do not have the capablities.

message 1277: by [deleted user] (new)

I started The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood last night and I finished it today. I couldn't put it down, it's amazing! I can't stop thinking about it.....

message 1278: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen I just got that one! Maybe I should bump it up on my TBR.

message 1279: by Kellie (new)

Kellie (kellieag) I'm reading The Book Thief right now, but hate how school makes it difficult to get any reading time :/

message 1280: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I am a bit over halfway through The Godfather. I think I'll finish it by this Saturday evening...because there's no way in hell I'm doing anything productive after I take the LSAT and I'm taking it very easy this week. Then I'll start The Sicilian, which is the sequel. I started Go Down Together The True, Untold Story of Bonnie and Clyde but I'm not very far yet. I probably need to get a move on it though.

I just finished Stiff The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers and am now starting The Old Man and the Sea

message 1282: by Emily (new)

Emily O (readingwhilefemale) | 487 comments Just finished The Martian Chronicles. Bradbury is amazing as always.

message 1283: by Justine (new)

Justine (paperbackheart) I'm reading Kafka on the Shore. I can't wait to find out where all this is going.

message 1284: by jessi (new)

jessi (infinitevantage) | 157 comments I finished The Glass Castle. I don't know what to read next. I started Go Tell It On The Mountain, and it's good, but I don't think I'm in the mood for it for whatever reason, so I'm going to pick something else.

I wish His Dark Materials would hurry up and come in the mail already so I could start that.

message 1285: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments Jessi, I love the His Dark Materials trilogy. You should listen to the audio version, they did it like a readers theatre. The author narrates and a full cast does the voices for the characters.

That sounds amazing! I keep getting books I ordered off of paperbackswap in the mail, but today was another day I didn't get it. I keep reading very short books so that when it comes I can start on it immediately :)

message 1287: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) I'm reading Julie and Julia 365 Days, 524 Recipes, 1 Tiny Apartment Kitchen which is really good. I just finished My Life in France which is a lot about the effort Julia put into the book to make it "easy" for the average untrained cook so it is really interesting to then read Julie's experience of cooking through the book.

message 1288: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (readerandwriter) I finished reading "Vampire Academy" last night. I am now reading "Frostbite" the second installment of the series.

message 1289: by Emily (new)

Emily O (readingwhilefemale) | 487 comments Just started The Kite Runner (so far not that great), The Life of Pi (still as good as I remembered) and I'm still reading Possession by A.S. Byatt (boring so far, but I've heard it gets better)

message 1290: by Bárbara (new)

Bárbara (leviathan_) Imo The Kite Runner gets better after the first.. 100 pages? I had to read it for an English class, and at first I thought it was dull, but it got better.

message 1291: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen I didn't like The Kite Runner at all... I didn't think it got better haha.

message 1292: by Emily (last edited Sep 28, 2009 07:54AM) (new)

Emily O (readingwhilefemale) | 487 comments I'm about 40% done with it and it keeps getting worse.
The author seems to feel like he has to explain the symbolic or moral significance of everything to us. Does he think that his readership is really so stupid that we can't figure it out for ourselves? And I absolutely hate the main character. Ugg. What a whiny brat. He lets something terrible happen to someone else, and then spends the rest of the book complaining about how it ruins his life. How selfish.
I'm still going to finish it because I'm reading it for the challenge. I'm just hoping to finish it soon so I can move on to better books.

message 1293: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen Emily that is exactly the way I feel about it. I finished it too, maybe you'll like the ending a little more, but I didn't care for it.

message 1294: by Lindsay (new)

Lindsay (ljones08) I really enjoyed the Kite Runner... Am I the only one?? haha

This and the fact Amir victimized himself so much, I have to agree with. I didn't really love the book, but I did like it in the end.

Saturday we went to Swiss Days. I took my neice and nephew to get snow cones, since I don't like to shop. So my mom and sister went to all the booths and ended up buying me a book. The author had set up a booth and was selling and signing it. So, I now am reading Saltwater in the Bluegrass by Cliff Kice.

message 1298: by Lindsay (new)

Lindsay (ljones08) I recently finished Still Alice, which was SO good, very powerful and touching. Especially as someone who has had a grandmother die of Alzheimer's, the book get a very introspective look at the disease.. I Highly recommend it!!

The Kite Runner was definitely not my favorite either. I have to say the scenery was beautiful and I loved the descriptions of the little things like kite running itself... but most of the characters ruined it for me. Especially Amir. Let us know what you think after reading the whole thing though..

I'm currently reading Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close and so far its amazing! I'd already have read the whole thing if I didn't have tests this week :/

message 1300: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen As a side note, I find it ironic that we're discussing our group read in this thread instead of the official group read thread :)
