Kellie, what did you think of Revolutionary Road? I saw the movie but have not yet read the book."

I really loved it and the writing (I'm not that familiar with Yates). The whole time though, it made me really want to see the movie...I love both DiCaprio and Winslet and kept picturing them as I read. As you know from seeing the movie it's not the most uplifting read, but I enjoyed it.

Heather (andshewontsleep) I've been reading The Historian for quite awhile now. I had some trouble getting into it at first, but I think it's starting to pick up enough that I'll actually feel motivated to read it more often. I think I've been reading too many vampire books lately so I was getting a little bored with it at first.
I also just started You Remind Me of Me. I'm only a couple chapters in but so far I think it's going to be a book I end up loving.

Emily O (readingwhilefemale) | 487 comments I really enjoyed The Count of Monte Cristo. It was fabulous.

I finally finished One Thousand and One Nights. Very strange book, sort of mix between Gullivers Travels and Grimms fairy tales. Interesting, but not captivating.
Now on to reread the Harry Potters then start the July book reads. Yay!

I had a friend that read the Historian and it took her a while to finish it. My fiancee read it and loved it. I tried reading it and couldn't I finally listened to it and loved it! So if you find you don't want to read it and if you can listen to books I would highly recommend it. There is a female and male voice for the characters in the book which really helped with the conversations and letters! Stick with it though, I loved the ending

message 1006: by Adriana (new)

Adriana | 188 comments I finished the Count of Monte Cristo. It was so good that I decided to watch the movie. Unfortunately, the movie was a total dissapointment for me. The only part that I somewhat enjoyed was when he was in prison other than that, i was not satifing in any way.

Right now i am currently reading Emma and i am enjoying the book. I am only half way through, but i hope to finish it by the end of this week.

message 1007: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I started reading The Kennedy Women The Saga of an American Family yesterday. I am loving it! And I haven't even gotten to where JFK's mom and dad get married. I'm putting The Grapes of Wrath on hold for a bit. I'd like to plow through The Sun Also Rises right quick first.

So many books, so little time.

message 1008: by Jess (new)

Jess I just started Juan Cole's Engaging the Muslim World. It's great so far! I'll definitely have a review up when I'm done.

message 1009: by Jessika (new)

Jessika Hoover (jessalittlebooknerd) I just finished New Moon last night and rolled right into Eclipse. These books aren't the best I've ever read, and I still can't figure out why people even try to compare them to Harry Potter, but I enjoy them.

message 1010: by Justine (new)

Justine (paperbackheart) I finished The Forest of Hands and Teeth. I love...the title (so much that I've been dreaming about tattoos based on what I see when I think about it). I didn't care for the book.

message 1011: by Leanna (new)

Leanna (leannerd) | 46 comments I just finished The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. It was absolutely amazing...I adored Rudy, Papa, and Max especially. I loved all the narrator's side notes. My favorite is this one, on page 307: "I do not carry a sickle or scythe. I only wear a hooded black robe when it's cold. And I don't have those skull-like facial features you seem to enjoy pinning on me from a distance. You want to know what I truly look like? I'll help you out. Find yourself a mirror while I continue."

One word to describe Zusak's style: amazing.

I just finished it last night, it was amazing!! I was worried at first that I wouldn't like the sarcastic tone the narrator had considering it was set in Nazi Germany, but it worked. Loved it. and I agree on the characters! I loved Rudy, Papa and Max... I'm very happy I bought this one because I know I'll re-read it plenty of times.

Now I'm on The Kite Runner...

message 1013: by Lynnie (new)

Lynnie I'm about to finish Summer at Tiffany which I just started this morning. It is so so soooo good!! :]

message 1014: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen I'm almost done rereading The Secret Life of Bees for the group read, and then I think I'm gonna try to read 1776.

message 1015: by April (new)

April (booksandwine) Lynn, I loved Summer at Tiffany! What is your favorite part?

message 1016: by Lynnie (new)

Lynnie I don't know how I can pick! haha.. The part in the elevators with the pearls was pretty entertaining and I loved hearing about Judy Garland coming in... I grew up adoring the 40s and NYC so I've really enjoyed it. I did find all the "ohmygosh" parts overused though! What was your fav part?

message 1017: by April (new)

April (booksandwine) I am such a sap, I liked when she thought Jim and stood her up, then she gets caught in the rain and comes back in to her apartment and Jim is waiting for her, and Majorie is nervous about looking terrible. I definately related to the girls. Oh, I also liked it when Majorie and the salesman were getting drunk off of the brandy on the third floor ha ha.

Jacqueline Quackenbush Jess wrote: "Jacqueline wrote: "Jess wrote: "I'm about halfway through Sarah Dunant's Sacred Hearts, a GoodReads giveaway. It's pretty good so far! I'm also nearing the 600 page mark in The Count of Monte Crist..."

I finished the Murakami book and actually ended up being a bit disappointed. Like you said, his plots are amazing, but I thought his character development was somewhat lacking and that showed itself more towards the end of the book. It was a really engaging read but the ending left me disappointed (I remember thinking the same thing of the previous Murakami book I read,Sputnik Sweetheart ). Still, I gave it three out of five stars.

I'm not sure if I'll read it in tandem with the group read on the communiy but I think I'll definitely pick up this summer!

message 1020: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments I just finshed Troy. It was ok. Not a favorite, but it did make me want to read more about Greek Mythology.

I'm just starting The Count of Monte Cristo. So excited about this one!

message 1021: by Emily (new)

Emily O (readingwhilefemale) | 487 comments I just finished Slaughterhouse Five, and I am currently reading 1776 (so slow) and Home Grown Democrat by Garrison Keilor. I'm trying to branch out, so I'm doing a few of the challenges, though I'm not going to post in the challenge threads because I started so late.
I just watched Shakespeare in Love (fabulous!) so I'm planning on reading Romeo and Juliet, as well as Hamlet and Much Ado About Nothing for one of the challenges. I'm also going to pick up In Search of Lost Time by Proust and Letters to a Young Poet by Rilke, as well as re-reading The Count of Monte Cristo for the group read.

Almost finished with Harry Potter book 2. The first two are so thin, they are pretty quick reads. Then we get to the big ones. Only have another 12 days to read them though. :)

message 1023: by Liz (new)

Liz I just finished A Gathering Light by Jennifer Donelly and have started I Capture the Castle by Dodi Smith.

message 1024: by Emily (new)

Emily O (readingwhilefemale) | 487 comments I finished Home Grown Democrat. I love Keilor.
I'm still working on 1776. I don't know if I can finish it.

message 1025: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) I just started (and am almost finished with) A Great and Terrible Beauty and love it. I'm reading it on my Kindle but contemplating buying the trilogy for real so I can share it.

I loved AGTB, and each book in the series is better than the last.

message 1027: by Janet (new)

Janet Just finished The Secret Life of Bees. It was ok. I didn't think it was as good as a lot of people were telling me it was. It was still worth reading though.

Now...I am finally, finally going to read Twilight. I gave in...haha!

message 1028: by S (new)

S I FINALLY finished "The Happy Isles of Oceania" by Paul Theroux. I started reading it back in March, and just now got through it. It was one of the worst books I've ever read!

message 1029: by Silvia (new)

Silvia (silverware) | 436 comments I finished Dreams from my Father by Obama and now I am reading Vanishing Acts by Jodi Picoult. Both are very good but very different!

I just finished The Poisonwood Bible a few minutes ago. It was good..but I kept getting bored..in the beginning and at the end. It was definitely one that made you think..I just think it kept dragging at some points. Now on to the daunting task of figuring out what to read next!

Emily O (readingwhilefemale) | 487 comments I've officially given up on 1776.
I never give up on books.
Oh well.

message 1036: by Jess (new)

Jess I also gave up on a book; it was Alaa Al Aswany's The Yacoubian Building. It just wasn't holding my interest.

I just started re-reading HBP in preparation for the movie release, and Richard Florida's Who's Your City?

message 1037: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (shadowrose) I decided to start The Count of Monte Cristo, it's been waiting to be read on my shelf for around a year so I suppose this is the best time to read it.

message 1038: by Monique (new)

message 1040: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen In true Tahleen fashion I've still managed to acquire books without actually buying any. Today I borrowed Back to the Garden The Story of Woodstock from the store today (because we can do that haha). It sounds pretty cool and it's gotten my interest for a while now.

lol, I've done that before. We usually will get store demos of all the new books and movies we get, and then we can check them out. But sometimes the vendor doesn't send us a copy so we "borrow" them, especially if it is a product we need need to know about to sell. We'll take movies and then just re-shrink wrap them when we're done.

message 1042: by Emily (new)

Emily O (readingwhilefemale) | 487 comments I got new books in yesterday!
I got two short story anthologies (one sc-fi and one regular), a book of poetry by Billy Collins that I've been waiting 2 weeks to get, and a book by Proust that I'm not quite sure if I'm going to read or not. I also have a few books waiting for me at the library. They just got in today, so I'll go pick them up later. I've been without something to read for way too long now. :)

is that by Muhammad Yunus? We read alot about him in my social entreprenuership class and some of my classmates went and saw him speak when he was in Philadelphia.

message 1048: by R (new)

R (feste) Yes, it is! I read about his work in class too, when we were doing social issues in South Asia, so I decided to look up his book. That's brilliant that your classmates saw him speak.

message 1049: by Janet (new)
