message 901: by Liz (new)

Liz Li, how was The Legend of Sigurd & Gudrun?

message 902: by Justine (new)

Justine (paperbackheart) I finished all my summer re-reading (not counting HP6), and will move on to either The Sun Also Rises or This Lullaby this afternoon.

message 903: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen Emily wrote: "I just finished reading Voices by Ursula K. Le Guin, which was fun, and Infidel by Ayaan Hirsi Ali, which was wonderful. I recommend it to everyone.
I am currently reading I'm a Stranger Here Myse..."

Emily, I listened to I'm a Stranger Here Myself on CD, Bryson read it. It was hilarious! I love him so much. I've had In a Sunburned Country sitting on my bookshelf for about two or three years, I need to get on that haha.

message 904: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker Right now I'm reading The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society and loving it! I read about 75 pages yesterday, which is more pleasure-read pages than I've read in a single day in a long time. I just want to curl up and do nothing but read it! This was the kind of book that I needed right now.

I loved that book Lori!! I didn't think i would enjoy it as much as I did but it was perfect!

message 906: by Jess (last edited Jun 12, 2009 10:04AM) (new)

Jess I'm almost done with The English Patient, and I'm about a third of the way through Extravagaria. The Pablo Neruda volume is taking me a while, as I'm reading the Spanish first, then the English, then comparing the two. It's a good exercise, since my Spanish has become rusty. (I can only imagine how long it's going to take me to read the Qur'an, since I'll probably be trying to pick out what words I know from the Arabic and trying to figure out the translation.)

I'm also picking The Mayor of Castro Street back up tonight, since I was fortunate enough to find it on InterLibrary Loan at my school.

So far it's been a very book-filled summer. The last few days I've been sick, so I've been sitting on the couch, reading away. (Not an altogether bad time...)

Just finished Choke and now on to some YA.. The Perks of Being a Wallflower

message 908: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) I started the The Master Butchers Singing Club last night and so far so good.

message 909: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen Yay I love that book Jamie!! Although I don't consider it YA even though some people do... it's in the fiction section of B&N.

I finished Love Medicine by Louise Erdrich (very good!) and started the first Percy Jackson book, The Lightning Thief.

message 910: by Jessika (new)

Jessika Hoover (jessalittlebooknerd) Finished Twilight, loved it. It wasn't the best book I've ever read by any means, but the story pulled me along for the ride.

I'm going to try to finish The Shunning this morning, so I can start New Moon and Unaccustomed Earth this afternoon.

message 911: by Jess (new)

Jess Tahleen, the Percy Jackson books are pretty good! Very entertaining, especially if you're interested in mythology.

And Jess, Unaccustomed Earth was probably my favorite book I've read so far this year (besides The Art of Racing in the Rain, for other reasons). Let me know what you think of it!

I stayed up late reading a couple more chapters of The Mayor of Castro Street. I haven't read a biography this compelling in a long time...

message 912: by Emily (new)

Emily O (readingwhilefemale) | 487 comments I really need to get around to reading that. I've wanted to read The Mayor of Castro Street for some time now.

message 913: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) just finished The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie and it pretty good. It is told from the perspective of an 11 year old girl so it is fairly simple, but a nice quick read. I also didn't figure out who did it until the very end which was fun. Now I just need to make a pie to complete the task.

message 914: by Allison (new)

Allison I'm reading The Last Dickens A Novel. I'm about 3/4 of the way through. It's a pretty good read, not a page turner really, but entertaining.

message 915: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (shadowrose) I'm currently reading Life, the Universe and Everything by Douglas Adams. So far I'm a little over half way done and I like it. It's not as good as the first two but it is still very entertaining.

message 916: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (readerandwriter) I finished reading "City of Glass" the other day. I am now reading 100 Cupboards by N.D. Wilson.

message 917: by Kelsey (new)

Kelsey Baguinat (kelseybaguinat) The Perks of Being a Wallflower is amazing.

message 918: by Angie (new)

Angie (angabel) Kelsey: You know you have to pass that book onto someone else who hasn't read it after you finish it, right? Okay, so you don't *have* to but that's what everyone I know has done with their book. Mine is lost somewhere and I don't mind one bit. :)

I finished two books today: Schuyler's Monster and In Search of Hope. Now I'm not quite sure what I want to read.

message 919: by Kelsey (new)

Kelsey Baguinat (kelseybaguinat) I like that idea! It's definitely a must read for everybody! =)

message 920: by Yusra Zainab Laghari (last edited Jun 15, 2009 06:43AM) (new)

Yusra Zainab Laghari (yusrazainab) | 20 comments I just finished reading The Zahir by Paulo Coelho

This book was not of the same quality as Alchemist but still presented some noble and elevated concepts as presented in all of Paulo's books and perhaps the reason I read his books is that they always tend to feature some sort of spiritual quest.

I am now reading The Catcher in the Rye

message 921: by Jess (new)

Jess I'm still reading The Mayor of Castro Street, which is keeping me interested because of its intertwined biographical and historical accounts. I also started The Count of Monte Cristo, which I can hardly put down, and I finished The Pearl last night. I loved The Pearl!

message 922: by Jessika (new)

Jessika Hoover (jessalittlebooknerd) Jess wrote: "Tahleen, the Percy Jackson books are pretty good! Very entertaining, especially if you're interested in mythology.

I love it so far! Something about her writing style just pulls me in. I think she does an amazing job at describing human relationships in such a real way--it makes her stories believable. I'm especially excited to read the three intertwining stories at the end!

Finished The Perks of Being a Wallflower and Crank this weekend. I'm on a YA kick this week I decided.

message 924: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen Me too Jamie! I just finished the first Percy Jackson and plan on borrowing the rest of the series from a friend. I started Sherman Alexie's The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian tonight and am already halfway through it. I love it so far.

Nice! I don't know why..but for some reason I'm starting to feel nostalgic this summer and I miss being younger. Summer sucks when you are older..I mean..yeah..I can drive and actually do stuff now..but I miss the days of no responsibility and doing whatever I wanted all day. So in short..I need YA books right now or I'm going to have a mental breakdown. lol

message 926: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen Haha I know what you mean. Working full time blows. Especially when you have screwy hours (curse you retail). I want more days off!

message 927: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I'm reading The Grapes of Wrath right now. It's really good so far. I'm getting in depth versions of stories about the Depression that I've heard all my life. It's been really touching and has made me so sad at times because of how futile it was to plant and how hard the farmers fought to stay on the land their grandfathers fought the Indians for.

message 928: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (shadowrose) I just started So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish by Douglas Adams, I'm not very far into it but I can see that it will be wonderful like the last 3.

Just finished the Sun Also Rises. Starting Cannery Row now.

message 930: by Angie (new)

Angie (angabel) Anyone who wants to give me their jobs, go for it. :) I love my reading time, but there's little I wouldn't give for a job at this point.

message 931: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Williams (mrslaurenwilliams) | 425 comments I'm reading Eve A Novel of the First Woman and Second Glance A Novel and I'm lovin both!!

In continuation with my YA kick..I just finished Stargirl and am now starting Speak

message 934: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 279 comments I started listening to The Art of Racing in the Rain so far it is good.

I am not sure if I want to start Sunshine or The Ice Queen A Novel for an actual book to read.

message 935: by Lee (new)

Lee I just finished the wonderfully done second in a trilogy, "The Phoenix Endangered" and am now starting "The Reincarnationist" by M.J. Rose.

message 936: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen On a whim I took out The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society out of the library today and am almost halfway done. I really like it! And on a side note, I had no idea the word "pie" was in the title until I read it in the actual text of the book. I don't know why I had never seen it on the cover.

hahahah Tahleen..the same thing happened to me too!! I never knew it and then I was reading it and I was like..wait..what!?

message 938: by Katerina (new)

Katerina | 252 comments I'm currently reading The Story of Edgar Sawtelle A Novel

message 939: by Jess (new)

Jess I also loved The Guernsey Library and Potato Peel Pie Society! I finished it thanks to a lengthy amount of time at the library the other day. I highly, highly recommend it.

And today, thanks to some waiting time before work training, I read I Loved, I Lost, I Ate Spaghetti by Giulia Melucci. The book did not live up to its fabulous title, unfortunately.

message 940: by Janet (new)

Janet Just finished The Choice by Nicholas Sparks. Not my favorite by him. I was kind of bumbed by that.

Just started Confessions of a Shopaholic. I just wanted to read something fun for right now and it's been sitting on my shelf forever. Haha.

message 941: by Jessika (new)

Jessika Hoover (jessalittlebooknerd) I finished Unaccustomed Earth by Jhumpa Lahiri yesterday. I loved it! I really want to read Interpreter of Maladies now.

I'm about 200 pages into New Moon by Stephenie Meyer, and I also plan to start The Year of Jubilo A Novel of the Civil War by Howard Bahr today.

message 942: by Jess (new)

Jess Jess, Interpreter of Maladies is also really good. It's a lot different than Unaccustomed Earth - a little bit more varied, a little bit more light-hearted - but very good.

Let me know what you think of the Howard Bahr book!

message 943: by Jessika (new)

Jessika Hoover (jessalittlebooknerd) Jess wrote: "Jess, Interpreter of Maladies is also really good. It's a lot different than Unaccustomed Earth - a little bit more varied, a little bit more light-hearted - but very good.

I've heard that about Interpreter of Maladies, which is what I think draws me to it. As much as I loved Unaccustomed Earth, I felt like the stories all held the same common formula.

And I'll definitely let you know about The Year of Jubilo. I read The Black Flower first, and it ranks as one of my favorite books, so I'm eager to start this one!

Finished Cannery Row and started Hunger Games.

message 945: by Emily (new)

Emily currently readingHow the Pro-choice Movement Saved America Freedom, Politics, And the War on Sex it's really interesting!! I highly recommend it to both pro-choice and pro-lifers. Has anyone else read it?

message 946: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen Jamie wrote: "hahahah Tahleen..the same thing happened to me too!! I never knew it and then I was reading it and I was like..wait..what!?"

I'm glad I wasn't the only one! I felt dumb. But anyway, I finished it later that night and LOVED IT. It's so good, you should all read it if you haven't already.

message 947: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (ash88) Just finished 1984, just started the Time Traveler's Wife. 1984 was really good, thought provoking, but I needed a mood change before I went to bed. I didn't want to have negative-utopia-nightmares.

so far Time Traveler's Wife is good I've been wanted to read it for a while!

Finished Hunger Games last night. Great book. I haven't read about such a strong female "child" role in a while. Strongly recommend it.

Now starting One Thousand and One Nights for the challenge.

message 949: by Jess (new)

Jess I finished My Most Excellent Year by Steve Kluger last night. I love his books!
