Kelsey Baguinat (kelseybaguinat) I've kind of been on a fantasy kick lately, so I started reading the Song of Ice and Fire series by George R.R. Martin. I'm on the first one, A Game of Thrones. I love it!

message 452: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I'm working on Old School still. It's really, really good! Unfortunately, it's making me want to pick up a bunch of other books right now...many of which I've already read.

message 453: by Justine (new)

Justine (paperbackheart) I just finished The Gargoyle and Little Earthquakes. I'm working on If On a Winter's Night a Traveler right now. So far, I'm not really a fan.

message 454: by Janet (new)

Janet Justine- did you enjoy Little Earthquakes. I really love that author!! I need to read more of her books but I just never remember them.

message 455: by Justine (new)

Justine (paperbackheart) i enjoyed Little Earthquakes. Last week I read Goodnight Nobody and didn't care for it at all. Today I just finished The Guy Not Taken or whatever and it was...eh. Tomorrow will probably be devoted to reading In Her Shoes - I saw the movie a few years ago and it was pretty cute.

Lauren Williams (mrslaurenwilliams) | 425 comments changed my mind of starting woman warrior to intrepreter of maladies, but not getting into it either... geez.. i might just take a reading break to clear my head. i bet i'll only last a day.

Justine- Quick Question:

In The Gargoyle, when he was listing all the food for the Christmas party, did you read it all or just skim it?

I laughed out loud during that page or two, my friend I actually got to read it, skipped it. He read like 3 lines, then skipped to when it was over.

message 458: by Janet (new)

Janet I FINALLY finished The Book Thief. It was ok. I thought it was going to be a lot better because everyone was saying it is so good. Maybe because it took me awhile to read but I didn't get very into it. I thought it was written really well but just not my favorite.

message 459: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (readerandwriter) I just finished reading "Specials" and I am now going to read "Extras", the final book in the Uglies series.

message 460: by Kelsey (new)

Kelsey Baguinat (kelseybaguinat) Customers keep recommending this used book store to me, so I finally went to check it out today. Big mistake. The books are so cheap, and they have a huge selection of fantasy (which I'm obsessed with right now). So holy cow. Even with my employee discount at work (B&N), these books are still cheaper. So no more buying things at list price! For now I just got two (Wizard's First Rule and A Wizard of Earthsea).

message 461: by Justine (new)

Justine (paperbackheart) Tami, I read it all! And it made me hungry! Haha.
Have you finished The Gargoyle? What did you think?

message 463: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) I've been reading Three Cups of Tea One Man's Mission to Promote Peace . . . One School at a Time for a little under a month now and finally starting to enjoy it again...I don't know if the middle was just slow or I could have been in a funk but now I'm glad I didn't give up. Also reading A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius, it is different but good. I think next is Alice Waters and Chez Panisse The Romantic, Impractical, Often Eccentric, Ultimately Brilliant Making of a Food Revolution and Starvation Heights A True Story of Murder and Malice in the Woods of the Pacific Northwest

I really liked it. Well, after she came into the story anyways. The beginning is rough. Very abitious, he put a lot into the story.
How about you? I got one of my friends to read it, but not quite sure he liked it.

Finished Franny and Zooey. Still undecided on what to start next. Was going to be Jessica Z but Lolita is sounding a bit more interesting. We'll see.

message 466: by Lori (last edited Feb 25, 2009 03:32AM) (new)

Lori Walker Lolita is definitely sounding good. But so is: All the President's Men (fits in with a class), Edgar Sawtelle (book club), The Thorn Birds (heard great things about it), The Fountainhead (started it already), Sylvia Plath's journals (they're interesting), The Witch of Portobello (just got it), and Arthus Schlesinger's journals (just got it and read the back). I'm also, conveniently, called to read the new Andrew Jackson biography for a class. But I'm having a hard time with the others.

I definitely wish I had the time and the mental fortitude to read 9 books at once, but I just don't.

message 467: by Justine (new)

Justine (paperbackheart) Tami, I think it's going to be one of my favorite books that I read this year. I really liked it.

message 468: by Sara (new)

Sara (thelukewarm225) | 15 comments 13th tale was awesome, but i agree that it did start out slow. i just finished passing by nella larsen, which was eh. now onto more textbook crap, their eyes were watching god, and dorian grey. is it may yet?

lori: reading nine books at once is never fun, but the way i get through it is just make a list of needs to be read in order by the date it needs to be read. i like crossing things off so i feel accomplished, i dunno it helps me. the upside of reading nine books at once of course is that if one is a bit boring there eight others to turn to :)

message 469: by [deleted user] (new)

I just finished reading Uglies and am moving onto Pretties. So far really good... :)

message 470: by Tami (new)

Tami | 3103 comments Mod
Justine, glad to hear that. I really enjoyed it too.

Sara, There is NO WAY I could keep 9 books seperate from each other. I have a hard enough time if I try 2.

message 471: by Grace (new)

Grace (gracethebabbler) i have just thrown myself into the Wheel of Time series, after finishing the second book in two days! what have i gotten myself into. its addictive!

Yesterday I got home from work and school and there was a package in the mail box! Yay, another free book win from the giveaways section!

American Rust.

I was getting ready to leave again, but since I opened the package up, I had to start reading. I am about 10 pages in, which isn't much but so far so good. So I guess that decided which book I was going to read next for me!

message 473: by Heather (new)

Heather (andshewontsleep) I just finished reading Kristy's Big Idea & Emma.. I decided I want to go back and read all the old Babysitter's Club books for nostalgia.
I'm currently reading Love in the Time of Cholera & The Boy in the Striped Pajamas.

message 474: by Lynnie (new)

Lynnie Just started Virgin Suicides the other day.. I'm LOVING it!!

message 475: by Janet (new)

Janet Heather- what are you thinking of The Boy in the Striped Pajamas? I really want to read that but I just always forget about it.

message 476: by Heather (new)

Heather (andshewontsleep) I'm not very far into it yet, but I'm liking it so far. I've always been fascinated with WWII so it's something I've been wanting to read for awhile too.

message 477: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I've noticed that whenever I announce a book on the What are You Reading threads or mark it as currently reading on my list, I never finish those books. So from now on, I'm going to just tell people what I've read...unless I'm reading for a discussion.

message 478: by Matthew (new)

Matthew Sloan (sloan6154) I have just finished The Way of ShadowsIt is an AWESOME book! A bit confusing at the beginning...but it all makes sense later in the book.

message 479: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) I just finished A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius and hated it...the first half was OK but then it kept going and going...for years I've heard how good it was but I was so disappointed. Started Starvation Heights A True Story of Murder and Malice in the Woods of the Pacific Northwest last night though and was up way too late reading

anna,

i have A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius on my tbr list..that stinks that you didn't like it! really not worth reading?

message 481: by Lynnie (new)

Lynnie I hear that with Dave Eggers you either love him or hate him

message 482: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) I personally don't think it is but I know there are plenty of people who disagree. I'd suggest starting it but if half way through you are tired of his babble just know it doesn't get better.

message 483: by Nuri (new)

Nuri (nools) | 145 comments Oh, noo... I love Eggers.

I can see how someone might not be up for his crazy meanderings, but it's precisely his neurotic rambling and detailed internalizations that I find so human and endearing (and brilliant, for sure; i don't meant to come off as patronizing).

Any subscribers to McSweeny's here? And may we be friends so that I may borrow all of your already-read issues, please??

message 484: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) I don't mean to "diss" Eggers, or anyone who likes him , but while I found his style humanizing at first it slowly turned to pathetic and annoying...my own opinion but I'll stop talking smack about him now though...apparently this morning I'm feeling a little gangsta

message 485: by Justine (new)

Justine (paperbackheart) I'm reading Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series right now. I finished book three yesterday and the library doesn't have the fourth book in - I can't decide if I should break down and buy it or just wait until it's due back March 10? That's like TWO WEEKS and I am all about instant gratification.

message 486: by Kelsey (new)

Kelsey Baguinat (kelseybaguinat) I haven't read A Heartbreaking Work...but I did just finish What is the What and I loved it! I'm not sure if that means I love Dave Eggers, but I definitely loved the book.

message 487: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm reading the Timetraveller's Wife, I'm nearly 300 pages into it. Its completely over-rated, nowhere near as good as The Lovely Bones!

message 488: by [deleted user] (new)

Roisu wrote: "I'm reading the Timetraveller's Wife, I'm nearly 300 pages into it. Its completely over-rated, nowhere near as good as The Lovely Bones!"

I recently read that book as well and thought it was not nearly as good as people make it out to be.

message 489: by Kelsey (new)

Kelsey Baguinat (kelseybaguinat) What?!? I'm flabbergasted! The Time Traveler's Wife was one of the best books I've ever read in my entire life!

just finished Jessica Z..now i'm trying to think of what to read next!

message 491: by [deleted user] (last edited Feb 27, 2009 04:58AM) (new)

I just finished The Time-travellers Wife....I don't get why its so popular. Its completely overrated, and I felt completely indifferent about the ending. Oh, and usually I love a good oul' novel with romance, but this one is awful!

BTW, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas is amazing! So is The Virgin Suicides.

message 492: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I'm working on the Witch of Portobello. It's really good so far. I'm planning on taking off tonight so I can finish it, but that means getting a lot of work done this morning and during my break. I'm not sure what I'll read after that, but hopefully it will be really good too.

message 493: by Ashley (last edited Mar 01, 2009 03:12PM) (new)

Ashley (readerandwriter) I just finished "Extras" by Scott Westerfeld. I am now reading "The Wednesday Letters" by Jason F. Wright.

message 495: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments I'm about to start "The Broker", by John Grisham. I've been told its really good.

Ah, "The Wednesday Letters". We sold that at my store, I never read it but my customers loved it.

message 496: by Matthew (new)

Matthew Sloan (sloan6154) has anyone else read "The Way of Shadows"?

message 497: by David (last edited Mar 12, 2009 03:44PM) (new)

David (canadiandave) I just finished the Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul by Douglas Adams and Death By Meeting.

I'm now rushing to finish Inkheart since it got recalled from the library. I stated Pride and Prejudice recently too and am trying to finish Streams of Silver by R.A. Salvatore.

I've got a huge list of books in my to-read section, too. So many books and so little time!

message 498: by Justine (new)

Justine (paperbackheart) I've been reading the Stephanie Plum series and I'm in the middle of To the Nines right now.
I'm taking a break from the series after this book to make a dent in all the library books I've wound up with (I've had to ban myself from reserving books until these ALL go back).

message 499: by Kimberly (last edited Mar 04, 2009 12:37PM) (new)

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments I'm reading Fablehaven Rise of the Evening Star. Its interesting, a cute story. I needed an easy read. I'm in the middle of a tough midterm and needed a book that didn't take too much energy to read. lol.

message 500: by Kelsey (new)

Kelsey Baguinat (kelseybaguinat) I totally love the Fablehaven books! =)
