Lisa Anyone who owns a dog must read this book! You'll have a whole new appreciation of the daily interaction and love between you and your dog.

Connie I love the fresh perspective of seeing life through a dog's eyes! I also liked all the car racing metaphors. I definitely recommend reading this book.

Steph_lynn extremely touching book and great for dog owners!

Lisa My favorite part was the dancing zebra. I used to tell bedtime stories with my sister about my stuffed animals coming alive a night. It made me laugh!

Emily The last two chapters were absolutely wonderful. The second to last made me cry sad tears, but then they were immediately changed to tears of joy by the final chapter. Stein did a great job of transforming a sad event into an incredibly touching one.

Pamela Pickering I read this book a few months before having to put my little Millie to sleep. It helped me to realize that it was okay and allowed me to see how it could be from a dog's perspective.

Julie Sandzimier This book convinced me to get a dog.

Lisa Since finding out our dog has lymphomia this week, I keep picturing the relationship the owner and dog had. Question, though. Didn't the occupation of the owner seem a bit eccentric?

Sharon Even people who don't like dogs will love this dog.

Acey love this book! the saddest moment for me was when denny couldn't even afford to pay for enzo's medical expense. :-( i read somewhere that they're making a movie out of this book and patrick dempsey will be denny... not sure how accurate that is?

Pamela Pickering I agree, I don't see PD as Denny either. Just watched a show tonight with an actor I think might fit but I don't know his name, LOL! It was the TV show (not movie) Friends w/Benefits and he played the blond guy.

Enzo beats all dog haters!!!

Susan I just finished this book and loved it. Didn't the "evil twins" just make you mad? I was just so angry with them making Denny leave the funeral. I loved the part at the end with the little boy named Enzo.

Cindy Julie wrote: "This book convinced me to get a dog."

I think it's great that you read it, not being a dog owner. Welcome to the wonderful world of doggie parenting!

And now I want two more!

Kitty Yes Lisa, I love this book, and very often, I look at my dog, and I know that his thoughts are intertwine with mine.

Ami E. Bowen I love this book and also A Dog's Purpose which is also told from the POV of a dog and is very worth the reading.

message 18: by Pam (new) - rated it 4 stars

Pam Williams I love this book but I don't think you need to own a dog to enjoy it. Whenever I look at my dog I think of the saying "I wish I was the person my dog thinks I am."

Cindy Thanks for the suggestion Ami! I added it to my to read list.

Susan Pam wrote: "I love this book but I don't think you need to own a dog to enjoy it. Whenever I look at my dog I think of the saying "I wish I was the person my dog thinks I am.""

I have heard that saying, Pam, but I don't know how true it is for me. After ten years my dog is still trying to whip me into shape, and often she seems to get very exasperated with my inability to learn.

Robin Read this book for my book club--cried all the way through it. Then my local librarian suggested Beautiful Joe. OMG I cried on every page. If you can get your hands on this book do so! I found one at my bookstore on the rare book shelf and snagged it. Dog Lovers BEWARE!

message 22: by Jess (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jess how could anyone not like this book - so truly beautiful and now every time my dog looks at me in that special way, I'm sure I know what he's thinking!

Kathy Taylor I loved this book and recommend it to all dog owners, especially those who are about or have recently lost their pet. The day will come when my two will leave this earth and the perspective given in this book will give me comfort in my loss.

message 24: by Jane (new) - rated it 4 stars

Jane I adored this book too and it definitely makes you look at your dog differently. Sad but uplifting at the same time. I like a book that can make you laugh and cry at the same time.

Linda I absolutely loved this book, I recommended it to a few ladies and they loved it as well ... Enzo is one special dog, someday I hope I can be the kind of person my dog thinks I am. LOL Any one that loves dogs will LOVE this book, don't miss it!!

Scarlett Although I don't consider myself a "dog person," I adored this book and could actually see myself with a dog...some day. However, I've recommended it to dog-loving friends with mixed reviews. How could you NOT love this book???

message 27: by Sue (new) - rated it 5 stars

Sue I am a "dog" person and miss my most precious "Lady". I almost didn't read this book because of the first Chapter but I persevered and I'm glad I did. The author came to our college/library to speak and he gave a whole new outlook on the book. Loved it!

Jennifer Abrahamsen I had a hard time picking up this book to read it because I knew I would cry. I thought it would be too sad for me. I cried through most of this book... happy and sad tears. Upon completing the book and looking at the story as whole I can see how happy the story really is and I have a new perspective on how my dogs see me! I lost my 4 year old Doberman this summer and I couldn't help but think of Enzo. I keep looking for Howie(my baby) in his human form when I meet new people.

Jennifer Abrahamsen Ami wrote: "I love this book and also A Dog's Purpose which is also told from the POV of a dog and is very worth the reading."

I just added "A Dog's Purpose" to my "to read" list. TY for the suggestion. It looks great!

Corazon This book touched my heart in a million ways. I have a dog named Simba and he looks exactly like Enzo on the front! Because of this, once I saw the cover of the book I HAD TO READ IT. And I LOVED it! Anyone who has a dog or had a dog or just LOVES dogs in general must read this book! It will make you love your dog more and understand the true meaning of friendship and love :)

Sue I don't read too many stories about animals but did read Dewey and loved it and then of course The Art of Racing in the Rain and loved Enzo. I'll have to find A Dog's Purpose. Thank's to all recommending the book.

Virginia I love animal stories and enjoyed all of these tiles. Some more than others and of course I end up cryin and laughing. I can't have pets because my husband has severe allergies. My son also has severe allergies but as an adult he continues with medication and has our grandog, wjhich is a chocolate lab. He is now nine years old and we know it is gooing to be difficult when he is gone. I like all of Jon Katz's books.

Ashley This book made me laugh and cry a lot in the same sentence, It was such a wonderful book. I have always had dogs and I love them all to pieces. I must say that since I read this book I look at them differently now. I so want to know what they are thinking in that head of there's. Especially my dog Tommy. He is a bassethound and he is interesting to say the least. I just look at those big brown sad eyes of his and I just melt.
Anyone who has pets can relate to Denny and anyone who is a pet can relate to Enzo...lol

Truelly amazing Book

Ashley Lisa wrote: "My favorite part was the dancing zebra. I used to tell bedtime stories with my sister about my stuffed animals coming alive a night. It made me laugh!"

I laughed for days at this part. I wouldnt even be reading the book and I just started busting out laughing. Now I can never look at a stuffed zebra the same.

Susan Has anyone read Following Atticus: Forty-Eight High Peaks, One Little Dog, and an Extraordinary Friendship by Tom Ryan. I hate to start a dog book if I know something bad is going to happen to the dog.

Pamela Pickering No, but I'm interested.

Schawn schoepke There must be some Freudian explanation for Enzos Zebra hatred. Not enough suckle as a pup or something. It really did make me laugh though.

Kirsten Great book.

Jennifer Abrahamsen Schawn wrote: "There must be some Freudian explanation for Enzos Zebra hatred. Not enough suckle as a pup or something. It really did make me laugh though."

Didn't any of your dog's ever just love to tear to the other side of a room grab a particular (animal, sock, toy) and rip it to shreds for what seemed like no reason? Maybe this was why!

Schawn schoepke Jen wrote: "Schawn wrote: "There must be some Freudian explanation for Enzos Zebra hatred. Not enough suckle as a pup or something. It really did make me laugh though."

I do recall flashbacks of a particular Irish setter tearing up and destroying my easter basket and stuffed bunny... Very Enzoesque!!!!! :)

Jennifer Hummer Absolutely, hands-down one of the best books ever. And not just dog books. All books.

Jennifer Abrahamsen See, no problem! The bunny and the zebra were cousins! LOL

Valerie Pamela wrote: "I read this book a few months before having to put my little Millie to sleep. It helped me to realize that it was okay and allowed me to see how it could be from a dog's perspective."

I read this book a few months after we put down our family black lab. It made me cry but made me think about how much he was there for the family like the dog in the book was to his family and owner Denny! My dog died when we were on vacation and I remeber that he was soooo loving to us before we left. He new he could give up when we were gone.

Marie Boland Jennifer wrote: "Absolutely, hands-down one of the best books ever. And not just dog books. All books."

I agree its a wonderful book, also read children`s version....

Ruthie Pennington This book was wonderful, especially if you own a dog. It actually made me want to leave the TV on for mine when I'm gone all day so that she has something to do so I have been leaving the Plant Earth series on for her. They are amazing animals, so trusting and forgiving, this book really does a great job of telling their story.

Lisa, I totally agree with you. It makes me wonder what my dog must think of her turkey toy that making a gobbling sound. This was by far one of the most touching books I've read.

Cole Really inspires! Touching, funny, thoughtful. I loved this book!
