namericanwordcat | 231 comments I have a lot of series I love and some others love that I can not get into.

Not all series have to be read in order to be enjoyed:

If you were trying to convince someone that a series was great and they should read it, which book would you recommend.

For example, I really can not get into Midnight Breeds. I have read the first and it was a 2 star for me. What book in the series would you have me read?

If you have a series that you want to like but don't, ask where to start. This might work for an author too.

message 2: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (laurenjberman) I really enjoy the Midnight Breeds series but you are right, the first one is not the best. I've read four so far and the best has been Midnight Awakening (#3) followed closely by Midnight Rising (#4). Kiss of Crimson (#2) is also really good.
Unfortunately, you MUST read the books in order to know what's going on as there is a unifying plot to all of the books in the series.

Personally, I prefer reading series in order so that I can keep track and I can't think of any where you could begin in the middle and go back. The first book usually sets up the world and is crucial to understanding events in later books.
One series where the first book is excellent is Pamela Palmer's Feral Warriors. The first book is Desire Untamed.
Hope this helps.

Terry (Ter05 TwiMoms/ MundieMoms) (ter05) | 608 comments YA - City of Bones

Adult - Outlander

This is fantasy romance but - Lord of the Fading Lands

I was into them all from the beginning and they should be read in order.

Mairead | 164 comments Actually, I think the sequel to City of Bones, City of Ashes, just blew me away and is definitely the one i'd recommend. Although I do love the first, the second is just amazing!

Terry (Ter05 TwiMoms/ MundieMoms) (ter05) | 608 comments Mairead, I agree each book in this series is better than the one before. But since Cali asked the best book to get hooked on a series I figured I had to list the first one - and I was hooked right in the beginning.

message 6: by Mairead (new)

Mairead | 164 comments It is a great opener. Can't beat a guy getting stabbed in a first chapter to get you hooked :D
The last one was incredible! :D

message 7: by Shelly (new)

Shelly (mashbay) I got hooked by Book 2 of the Kate Daniels books. Then I want nuts trying to get Book 1 and I think waiting for Book 3.

Mlpmom (Book Reviewer) (mlpmombookreviewer) | 839 comments Grave Dance by Kalayna Price is the first book in her Alex Craft series and it is also a really good first book. It has me hooked on the series. The downside is that there are only two books out yet but it is definitely worth the read.

message 9: by [deleted user] (new)

Mlpmom ~ I agree! The new Alex Craft series, Grave Witch (book 1) and Grave Dance (book 2) by Kalayna Price are really enjoyable reads. Grave Witch had me hooked at the first page. Can not wait for book 3!

Mlpmom (Book Reviewer) (mlpmombookreviewer) | 839 comments Yes the Night Huntress Series is amazing!! Every single book has been wonderful and you can't always say that about a series.

Another really good one is the In Death series by J.D. Robb. The first book is Naked in Death and they just keep getting better and better as they go! Awesome series!

I agree, Mac was not always my favorite. Barrons was great but Mac got on my nerves sometimes. I had a hard time with the first two books because I find Moning would over-detail everything she described. The 3 last books were better because there was more going on. I think she could have joined the first two books together. Would have made them more action packed.

Mlpmom (Book Reviewer) (mlpmombookreviewer) | 839 comments I agree as well and the last two (actually the last one) were by far the best.

Missyb | 493 comments The Accidental Vampire, the Argeneau series by Lynsay Sands. It is so funny, sexy, danger, twists, mystery, etc. I read it first even though it's the 7th in the series and then couldn't get the others fast enough

The Night Huntress series is great. The first book hooks you.

Terry (Ter05 TwiMoms/ MundieMoms) (ter05) | 608 comments Reading this it strikes me that it all depends on each individual. I have recommended books that I loved from the first pages and had people say, "I just couldn't get into it". I know Halfway to the Grave is wildly popular and it did not interest me at all - I did finish it but only because I wanted to give it a chance. We all see something different in books and want something different. But when starting a book it is great if you are hooked from the first few pages instead of having to give it that "100 pages test" to decide if you are going to like it or not.

I agree with Terry! It's so individual.

I also agree with Missyb about The Accidental Vampire. That's the book that hooked me on the Argeneau Family and was my favorite in the series.

I agree as well. It all depends on what you look for in a book. What makes you tick... :)

Michelle the Romance Witch (michelle_the_romance_witch) | 2 comments i would say you definitly can't overlook the dark-hunter series by Sherrilyn Kenyon. My personal favorite was Talon's Book (#3) Night Embrace. But others i know enjoyed starting with Kyrian's Book (#1) Night Pleasures

Just to show you how individual the choice of a book is, The Accidental Vampire was my least favorite book in the Argeneau series! I got hooked on How To Marry a Millionaire Vampire, but I know that some people just feel meh about that one.

I always start with the first book in a series and take it with a grain of salt, knowing it might not be the best of the series. I always give a series a second chance.

Love this series.
Just finished Zarek's book (#4 Dance with the Devil). Actually, you don't need to start with the first book (Fantasy Lover) because it is a prequel but the main characters are mentioned in books that follow. It isn't the best in my opinion, book #2 Night Pleasures is much better.

I agree. Night Huntress is one of the best series that I have read in this genre. The first book is great and the rest of the series does not disappoint. Anxiously awaiting the next installment.

Kelli (mumandoc) | 31 comments Ok, have to add in the Chicagoland Vampire series Some Girls Bite (Chicagoland Vampires, #1) by Chloe Neill . Love this series as much as BDB Black Dagger Brotherhood Collection Lover Unleashed, Lover Mine, Lover Avenged, Lover Awakened, Lover Eternal, Dark Lover, Lover Revealed, Lover Unbound, Lover Enshrined by J.R. Ward , Cat and Bones Destined for an Early Grave (Night Huntress, #4) by Jeaniene Frost , and Karen Marie Moning's Fever Series Darkfever (Fever, #1) by Karen Marie Moning . Also, starting to read some of Nalini Singh's Psy-Changling series. Cant say I'm as excited about it as others seem to be but I need something to read until the next Jeaniene Frost, JR Ward and Chloe Neill comes out.

Katya | 645 comments Some of the series already listed in this board are my favorites as well.

But another series I have really enjoyed is The Sentinel Wars by Shannon K. Butcher.
The first book was good but once I kept reading them I really got sucked into the story. I re-read the first book then and enjoyed it so much more. They are a group of warriors (another race of beings) who are fighting demons and in league with vampires and other beings. They meet their mate who helps them by absorbing the energy it takes to fight the demons...You get the picture.
Burning Alive (Sentinel Wars, #1) by Shannon K. Butcher Finding the Lost (Sentinel Wars, #2) by Shannon K. Butcher Running Scared (Sentinel Wars, #3) by Shannon K. Butcher Living Nightmare (Sentinel Wars, #4) by Shannon K. Butcher On the Hunt (Includes Sentinel Wars #3.5, Final Prophecy #5.5, Gods of Midnight, #4.5) by Gena Showalter Blood Hunt (Sentinel Wars, #5) by Shannon K. Butcher

The Scanguards (Erotic-Romance) Vampire Series by Tina Folsom was another one where I read them out of order but once I read the first (third)I really enjoyed the series and look forward to another volume in this series. This is a story about a group of vampires who work for a security company owned by Samson in San Fransisco. They are trying to fit in quietly and each book has some type of trouble that the gang all have to pull together to solve. Each book shares with you a bit about each character as you go on. Very good reads.
Samson's Lovely Mortal (Scanguards Vampires, #1) by Tina Folsom Amaury's Hellion (Scanguards Vampires, #2) by Tina Folsom Gabriel's Mate (Scanguards Vampires, #3) by Tina Folsom Yvette's Haven (Scanguards Vampires, #4) by Tina Folsom

Here is a series I enjoyed as well: Zorn's Warriors by Laurann Dohner. Okay it is futuristic, and involves spaceships and other worlds...the heroine is an earth girl-but the stories are pretty good and I found I really enjoyed them.
Ral's Woman (Zorn Warriors, #1) by Laurann Dohner Kidnapping Casey (Zorn Warriors, #2) by Laurann Dohner Tempting Rever (Zorn Warriors, #3) by Laurann Dohner Berr's Vow (Zorn Warriors, #4) by Laurann Dohner

And finally, a series I fell in love with and only read one book is by Thea Harrison. The second in this series is to be released in a few days. Can't wait. Wow, I love the characters, and the story/action - really good. Dragons, Elves, Gnomes, Fae's and a little bit of everything. The the writing really well done. If the second is anything like the first I will be hooked.
Dragon Bound (Elder Races, #1) by Thea Harrison Storm's Heart (Elder Races, #2) by Thea Harrison Serpent's Kiss (Elder Races, #3) by Thea Harrison Oracle's Moon (Elder Races, #4) by Thea Harrison

Book of Shadows (Wicca, #1) by Cate Tiernan

message 43: by Shelly (new)

Shelly (mashbay) Yes, but many of the series being listed don't make you wait for the relationship between the couple. You know who is getting together for absolute sure. It's hard to find an author making us wait because we aren't always patient about getting the couples together.

message 44: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (midna) | 44 comments I'm not patient, not really. It's Paris, Keeper of Promiscuity, who definitely needs to find his mate. He suffers now for - now many? 5 books? I so want to see him happy again *sigh*

Julian's book is #1 in the series. It explains the where Julian came from and how he fits into the the DH world and his friendships. Especially since Kyrian shows up at his house in the 2nd book.

Missyb | 493 comments Kresley Cole's A Hunger Like No Other was very good and is the first book in the Immortals After Dark series and hooks you on the series. Playing Easy To Get is listed as book 1, but it's a short story and you could probably get along without it, I did.
